Kansas City Chiefs starting right guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif announced on Twitter Friday that he is opting out of the 2020 NFL Season.

“This is one of the most difficult decisions I have had to make in my life but I must follow my convictions and do what I believe is right for me personally. That is why I have decided to take the Opt Out Option negotiated by the League and the NFLPA and officially opt out of the 2020 NFL season,” Duvernay-Tardif said in the tweet.

He said that being at the front line of the COVID-19 crisis in the offseason gave him a different perspective on the pandemic. Duvernay-Tardif graduated from medical school.

He said that while he knows the Chiefs’ medical staff have put together a strong plan to minimize the health risks associated with COVID-19, some risks will remain.

“I want to thank everyone in the Kansas City Chiefs organization for their support and understanding,” Duvernay-Tardif said.

He was scheduled to make $2.75 million this season and instead will receive $150,000 from the NFL’s opt-out deal.
