On 16 February 2015, Govind and Uma Pansare went for a morning walk near their home in Kolhapur, in the western state of Maharashtra, India. Two men on a motorcycle stopped them and asked for directions, but the Pansares could not help them. One of the men laughed, pulled out a gun, and shot the two Pansares. Uma Pansare was hit but survived the attack. Her husband, Govind Pansare, died in a hospital shortly thereafter on 20 February at age 82. Raised in poverty, Govind Pansare was fortunate to go to school, where he encountered Marxist ideas. In 1952, at the age of […]

(Paul Chinn/The San Francisco Chronicle via Getty Images) ‘Madness’ “These books are there to give our kids the language that they need to express how they are already feeling, and that’s it,” said one LGBTQ+ rights advocate. “And if we take those books away from their libraries, then we’re saying…that they are alone in those schools.” A bill proposed by a Republican state senator in Oklahoma would empower parents to have books that discuss gender identity removed from public school libraries—a […]
Above photo: Students, parents and educators gather outside the Central York School District Educational Service Center to protest the district’s banned resources list on Monday, Sept. 20, 2021, in Springettsbury Township, York County. Parents yelling about masks or demanding book bans over ‘critical race theory’ isn’t really about their kids, who have different ideas. I’m old enough to remember when sociologists’ big worry for the American family was “helicopter parents” — moms and dads who hovered too closely over their spawn, denying them room to breathe. How quaint. The long, hot summer of 2021 has brought “the Sherman tank parent” — […]
Cary Grant’s most prized possession was either his father’s pocket watch, or a gold chain that he wore around his neck that held one of Jennifer’s baby teeth in Lucite, and three charms that represented the three religions of his four ex-wives: a St. Christopher medal from the Catholic Virginia Cherrill, a small cross representing the Protestant religions of Barbara Hutton and Betsy Drake, and a Star of David for the Jewish Dyan Cannon. He continued to expound on the benefits of LSD to anyone who would listen, as well as anyone who was disinclined. He became known as the go-to […]
Books on Trump: the gifts that keep on giving. Illustration: Guardian DesignWade through the vast tomes of books written about the president over the last four years and a horrifying picture emerges Guardian/UK: Donald Trump is not a reader but to the publishing industry he is the gift that keeps on giving. His time in the White House has yielded an avalanche of books with titles like Fear, Rage, Unhinged and Fire and Fury. Together, they paint a withering portrait of the 45th president. Some crackle with the fury of scorned employees. Others are banquets of gossip by seasoned reporters, whether highbrow (Bob Woodward) […]
On March 31, 1941, MPPDA president Will Hays released his annual report, titled Motion Pictures and National Defense. Although most of the 38-page document would be ignored by the Senate investigation of Hollywood, Hays outlined Hollywood’s response to the turmoil in Europe. Hays describes 1940 “as a period of supreme crisis in the history of the world.” Profits were the only true ideology in Hollywood, and the war was clearly affecting foreign sales. Hays listed fourteen countries that no longer bought Hollywood films and thirteen that were nearing the same position. The isolationist senators used this economic change as an explanation […]
The Department of Justice and lawyers acting on behalf of Melania Trump attempted to block an explosive tell-all book from the First Lady’s former close friend and adviser, according to documents reviewed by The Daily Beast. On July 7th The Daily Beast reported Stephanie Winton Wolkoff, who played a key role in planning the 2017 inauguration and is now assisting a federal probe into it, would release Melania & Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady. At the time, a person with knowledge of the matter said that First Lady Trump’s one-time confidante had signed a […]

In 2013, J.K. Rowling explained how she chose her now-controversial pseudonym, “Robert Galbraith.” The first name, she said, was a nod to her political hero, Robert Kennedy. And the last name? “When I was a child, I really wanted to be called Ella Galbraith, I’ve no idea why.” It’s a charming anecdote—but unfortunately, Rowling shares her pseudonym with real-life psychiatrist Robert Galbraith Heath, who in the 20th century pioneered what we now call conversion therapy using techniques including electroshock and “brainwashing” drugs. Rowling’s anecdote, issued before her alternate name choice had stirred much mainstream controversy, casts this tie as sheer, if […]
It’s a strange time for restaurants to say the least, and it’s certainly an even stranger time to write a memoir about a life spent in them. Nonetheless, David Chang, the chef and founder of Momofuku, creator and star of Netflix’s Ugly Delicious, and New York Times bestselling author, recently published his new highly anticipated memoir Eat a Peach. While the book is coming out during an unprecedented time for restauranteurs (and everyone), throughout the book, Chang promotes the idea that cooking in a restaurant has been and always will be a sisyphean, uphill battle. Throughout the memoir, Chang details his […]
The kitchen is the most difficult part of any home to organize, in my opinion. That’s because unlike clothes or furniture, deciding what appliances, pantry staples, and tools you need to keep, and which to get rid of, can be tricky. Thankfully, there’s a new book from a brand and shop that makes some of our favorite kitchen items, that will both help you be a better home cook, and create a kitchen you only thought possible in your wildest dreams. Food 52’s Your Do-Anything Kitchen isn’t a recipe book. It isn’t filled with 98 recipes you’ll never cook and two […]
A set of politically charged books was immediately spotted just behind the UK prime minister’s back as he spoke in a rambling manner about the importance of sending schoolchildren back to their classrooms after a lengthy coronavirus lockdown, and the frustrating public exams fiasco. Prime Minister Boris Johnson told a roomful of Leicestershire school pupils it is politically acceptable to sing Rule Britannia and ruled that Harry Potter is not sexist, but it was the choice of books behind the top speaker that caught the eye of super-attentive internet wags. Many of them appeared to feature rather pointed titles, with the […]
Amazon and Apple have reported major quarterly gains, with the Jeff Bezos brainchild posting its biggest-ever profit while Apple saw strong earnings, even as Covid-19 drives the US economy into its worst contraction on record. The two tech giants announced their second quarter results on Thursday, both topping expectations on Wall Street as online sales and virtual products see a surge amid the ongoing health crisis. Amazon revenue jumped to $88.9 billion, up 40 percent from 2019, and the company brought on some 175,000 new employees in recent months. Though it had predicted it would lose money after dropping billions on […]
Chances are, you might be planning on taking a road trip this summer. If you do, remember to do it safely. Beyond that, there is only so much music you can listen to, and in my opinion, only so many podcasts as well. I recommend an audiobook. Plenty of them are read by amazing actors who will draw your right into the story and will compel you to through the story. Audiobooks are a great way to make a road trip, or just a long drive, even more fun and entertaining. Plus, if you sign up with Audible, your first audiobook […]

The cover art of Aron Flam’s much-talked-about book features a poignant remake of a cult WWII-era poster, which according to copyright holders constitutes disfigurement. In Flam’s version, the Swedish tiger, a wartime symbol of secrecy, wears an Nazi armband and makes a Nazi salute. The Swedish authorities have pivoted on a book by Jewish comedian, journalist, and writer Aron Flam about Sweden’s problematic relations with Nazi Germany during World War II. All the remaining copies have been confiscated at the warehouse of the publisher, and now Swedish prosecutors are seeking permission to destroy the books, including copies already sold, the news […]
General Michael Flynn had to be removed. He knew too much. He had to be shut down and silenced. He was the primary Deep State target. Sidney Powell was on the Vicki McKenna radio show and she dropped another bomb. Per a report from Lifezette, General Michael Flynn’s attorney Sidney Powell shared the following: “He was going to audit the intel agencies because he knew about the billions Brennan and company were running off the books,” Powell said, referring to former CIA Director John Brennan. Powell began her interview noting at the 1:00 mark that when she took over the Flynn […]
Robert Trump, Donald’s younger brother, spent at least 10 days in a Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit before being released this week and launching legal action to try and stop the publication of his niece’s explosive tell-all book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World’s Most Dangerous Man, according to multiple people familiar with the situation. Robert, 72, had been at Mount Sinai hospital’s Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) in New York since at least June 11th, being treated for a serious condition. He was discharged on Sunday and despite his stay in the hospital, he wasted no […]
The way Mike Birbiglia talks about life is like a knife through butter: clear, concise, straight to the point. The stand up comic is a New York Times bestselling author, writer, director, actor, radio show contributor, podcast host, I’ll stop listing things because pretty much anything you can think of, he does it. His latest memoir The New One, based off of his hit Broadway show, explores the trials and tribulations of his reluctant coming-to-terms with fatherhood. Woven through poems penned by his wife, Birbiglia writes of a love affair with pizza, managing work and family, and the unearthed joys of […]
The former national security advisor’s book, set to be released Tuesday but leaked to the press ahead of time, has made headlines around the world over its claims about the Trump White House’s approach to foreign policy. Administration officials have simultaneously denied the book’s claims, and tried to ban its release on national security grounds. President Donald Trump has added another epithet to his growing catalogue of insults against former national security advisor John Bolton, calling him a “grossly incompetent” “liar” and “wacko” in a tweet, and suggesting that he’d only hired him because he enjoys “hearing differing points of view.” […]
It’s safe to say that almost any book about the US president and his administration is bound to be a hit. Many of them cause a stir long before their publication, which is the case with John Bolton’s upcoming memoir too, but they seem to fade from memory one after the other, only to be replaced by a fresh “exposé. The Room Where It Happened, a damning memoir by Donald Trump’s former national security adviser John Bolton, is coming out tomorrow. The book has already topped Amazon’s best seller list, not least due to it being dubbed in the media as “shocking” […]

Donald Trump’s niece, his deceased brother’s daughter, is set to publish a tell-all book this summer that will detail “harrowing and salacious” stories about the president, according to people with knowledge of the project. Mary Trump, 55, the daughter of Fred Trump Jr. and Fred Trump Sr.’s eldest grandchild, is scheduled to release Too Much And Never Enough on August 11th, just weeks before the Republican National Convention. One of the most explosive revelations Mary will detail in the book, according to people familiar with the matter, is how she played a critical role helping The New York Times print startling […]
Juan Vidal, a radical alt-left writer who contributes to deranged anti-Trump websites like The Daily Beast and Rolling Stone, published an article on NPR’s website demanding that white people “decolonize” their bookshelves by removing all books written by white people and requiring they be replaced with books that are written by people of color. In removing those books, Vidal leaves no explanation what to do with them, but we all know what he means. This radical left “anti-fascist” writer is advocating for modern day book burning of content from a specific racial or ethnic group, the same exact thing that Hitler […]
Michael Stuhlbarg elevates everything he’s in—a fact once again confirmed by Shirley, an excellent new biographical film about The Haunting of Hill House writer Shirley Jackson (Elisabeth Moss) from Madeline’s Madeline director Josephine Decker. As Jackson’s husband Stanley Edgar Hyman, an esteemed critic and professor at Vermont’s Bennington College, Stuhlbarg exudes formidable intellect, sharp wit, daunting imperiousness, and a unique mixture of staunch loyalty and brazen unfaithfulness, energizing a marital dynamic that’s further complicated by the couple’s decision to welcome two boarders—aspiring academic Fred Nemser (Logan Lerman) and his wife Rose (Odessa Young)—into their home. Their crowded household is soon ripe […]
