In May, Caracas accused the Trump administration of “criminal” aggression against Venezuela with its sanctions policies, in place since 2018. Bloomberg has cited unnamed sources as saying that Washington is considering imposing additional sanctions on Venezuela to stop the remaining fuel transactions permitted with Caracas. The sources claimed that the sanctions may target crude swaps with European and Asian companies, and that the White House has debated the measures for at least five months, initially prioritising sanctions against Iran over its gasoline supplies to Venezuela. More sanctions against the South American country have yet to be finalised and the talks are […]
Relations between Brussels and Caracas deteriorated in late June, when President Nicolas Maduro ordered the expulsion of the EU’s envoy to Venezuela, Isabel Brilhante Pedrosa, in a move that came in response to the bloc expanding sanctions against the South American country. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza has accused the EU of following the US path in terms of policy towards the Latin American nation. Referring to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, Arreaza slammed Brussels’ position on Venezuela as “aggression” that runs counter to international law and diplomatic conventions. “When Borrell served as the Spanish […]
On Tuesday, the European Council lambasted a decision by the Supreme Court of Venezuela to reshuffle the composition of the country’s National Electoral Council (CNE) by expelling opposition parties from the body. President Nicolas Maduro has warned the European Union (EU) against interfering in Venezuela’s domestic affairs. The warning came during a Tuesday meeting with the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), of which he is a supporter, as Maduro dwelled on the forthcoming elections to Venezuela’s National Assembly. “[…] I have made a statement to the EU: worry about the coronavirus, racism in the EU, and the economic crisis. Don’t […]
Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido has taken refuge at the French Embassy in the country’s capital, Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza said. Guaido previously sought to shoot down the rumors, insisting he is “with the people.” “We cannot enter the premises of any country’s embassy whatsoever, in this case Spain or France,” Arreaza said on Thursday, referring to both Guaido and fellow opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, who fled to a Spanish diplomatic compound soon after a failed attempt to spark an insurrection in April 2019. Arreaza said this means that any arrest of the two men “is not possible.” We hope that […]
Caracas will send ships and aircraft to ensure five Iranian tankers, said to be loaded with some 1.5 million barrels of oil, make it safely to Venezuelan shores amid reports the US is seeking to hinder the delivery. “When they enter our exclusive economic zone, they will be escorted by Bolivarian National Armed Forces boats and planes to welcome them in and thank the Iranian people for their solidarity and cooperation,” Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López said on Wednesday, referring to the five Iranian-flagged vessels expected to bring some much-needed fuel to Venezuela in late May or early June. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has said that evidence will soon reveal the US leader himself was behind the failed incursion attempt, noting that Washington severed all remaining ties with Caracas thereafter. In an interview with Uruguayan reporter Jorge Gestoso on Thursday evening, Maduro said the freshly-appointed Ambassador James Story – the first formal US envoy to the country in some 10 years – and other senior American officials were to blame for last weekend’s attempted raid, in which two US security contractors were arrested and eight local fighters killed. “James Story has his feet, his hands and his whole body in […]
