NOTE: While we have to be wary of the greenwashing term, ‘Nature-based Solutions,’ this one actually does seem to be nature-based without displacing people or allowing pollution to continue. – MF The survival and development of human society depends on water. In fact, global water demand increased nearly eightfold between 1900–2010 as a result of factors like population growth, economic development and a shift in diet. But in China, one of the world’s fastest growing economies, the vital resource is running out. The country’s 1.4 billion population needs water to thrive but it has become limited and unevenly distributed. After decades of urbanisation […]
From grassroots to lawmaker. The notion of Chinese democracy is not the same as that in the West. The political system in China is more about consensus building within a greater voice rather than the protracted bargaining to arrive at decisions common in the West. The country’s application of democratic principles follows an approach Chinese President Xi Jinping has termed “whole-process people’s democracy.” The concept was put forward about two years ago, during Xi’s visit to a civic center in Shanghai. Based on people’s congress system, the “whole-process people’s democracy” enables the Chinese people to broadly and continuously participate in the […]

The Trump administration has been pushing the other three QUAD members — India, Japan, and Australia — to form voluntary groupings in Asia to counter what it sees as the growing power of China. Nevertheless, the US State Department admitted that other countries are not forward-leaning on countering the “threat” posed by China. During a Tuesday media briefing, US State Department officials brought up the recent clashes between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh, “where you’ve actually got people beating each other to death”, in order to explain the need for groupings of likeminded nations in the region. “If you look […]

A termination of relations between China and the United States will be quite costly for both sides; it’s also likely that China will develop its own payment, debt, and other systems, which would be incompatible with the existing ones. This is what Robert Daly from the Wilson Centre’s Kissinger Institute said. According to Daly, in the most extreme scenario, China and the US will follow their own technological standards, meaning that an inclusive global financial and technological system will cease to exist. In the second half of the 20th century, the United States strengthened its status as a global economic and […]

Chinese exports rose for the third consecutive month in August, up by a solid 9.5 percent from a year earlier, customs data showed on Monday. That’s the strongest gain since March 2019. Some 396,000 tons of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) were exported to China in June, according to a Bloomberg report citing data from China’s General Administration of Customs. That figure reflects a 20.7 percent rise compared to May. Statistics showed that US LNG exports to China amounted to 340,000 tons during the same period, slightly up by 2.4 percent. Overall, the world’s largest energy consumer, China, imported 5.79 million tons of LNG last month, boosting its imports by 29 percent year-on-year. This Long Reads Sunday is a reading of Adam Tooze’s recent review of four books on the growing conflict between the U.S. and China. This week on Long Reads Sunday, our selection is “Whose Century?” by Adam Tooze in the London Review of Books. Nominally a review of four recent scholarly works on the conflict between the U.S. and China, Tooze main argument is that the central problem with viewing this as a new Cold War is the idea that it is new. Instead, we need to understand that, contra Fukuyama’s famous essay, history didn’t end with the fall of the Berlin Wall – at […]
Which one is the centrally managed police state? Which one is the pro-innovation jurisdiction embracing open-source technologies and decentralized governance networks? OK. I’m being a tad facetious. The reality is Chinese President Xi Jinping has severely concentrated power. In general, his government, with its Hong Kong crackdown and Uighur detention camps, has encroached upon people’s freedoms more than at any time since Mao Zedong’s rule. Also, the default assumption should be that China’s blockchain vision favors cryptographic backdoors, centralized master keys and transaction monitoring systems more than it does the permissionless, censorship-resistant ideals of those six blockchains – Ethereum, Tezos, NEO, […]

Guest post by Lawrence Sellin Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the Chinese Communist Party has desperately tried to convince the world that SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus responsible for COVID-19, was naturally transmitted from animals to humans. That is, SARS-CoV-2, over time, naturally mutated in animals until it attained structures capable of infecting humans. A new scientific study, however, demonstrates that SARS-CoV-2 could not have “jumped” from animals to humans in the way China claims, because it is probably incapable of infecting bats or pangolins (scaly anteaters), the only two animal hosts that could have harboured the virus. (Author Joe Hoft lived in Hong Kong for nearly a decade and provides this first hand perspective) China took control of Hong Kong, the former British colony, in 1997. Ever since that time, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), the small group that runs China, has attempted to control the tiny country. This has escalated over the past year. The CCP agreed to a 50-year plan to take over the country of Hong Kong in 1997 after the takeover. However, this may never have been the CCP’s intent. Now after less than 25 years, the CCP is hammering Hong Kong into submission […]

File it in the rapidly-brimming “biggest-stories-of-2020-you-haven’t-heard-about” folder. Amidst the madness merger of pandemic and protests – both of which Trump’s minions have blamed on China – there’s been scant attention paid to a brewing conflict between two of the world’s nine nuclear-armed powers (accounting for […]
[ Editor’s Note: Scott has an excellent analysis below on Trump’s evolving China Jihad. But the first thing that would come to mind for VT is always, “why make this big public move now, on a situation that pretty much existed when Trump came into office?” Sure, China might be a bit “more bad” now, but so is Trump, and the election polls are certainly showing this. When did China declare itself a unipolar power? I seem to have missed that somehow, but I sure do remember Trump blabbering on about it. Here we have Pompeo doing his usual weekly accusation. […]
The United States has already imposed several rounds of travel restrictions on various groups of Chinese nationals in the past year, though the current proposal, if implemented, could affect an unprecedented number of people. The Trump administration is considering its strongest restrictions yet on travel to the United States by Chinese citizens, a move that is very likely to trigger retaliation from Beijing amid deteriorating relations, The New York Times reports. Officials with knowledge of the proposal, which has yet to be finalised and get President Trump’s approval, told the newspaper that the travel ban could apply to members of the […]
China has accused the US of trying to inflame tensions among powers that have stakes in the South China Sea. The rebuke comes after Washington formally rejected China’s territorial claims in the region on behalf of US allies. In a strongly-worded statement on Tuesday, the Chinese embassy in the US demanded that Washington keep its distance from the disputes between Beijing and other nations claiming sovereignty over contested territorial waters and islets in the South China Sea. “We advise the US side to earnestly honor its commitment of not taking sides on the issue of territorial sovereignty, respect regional countries’ efforts […]
DiDi, the Chinese equivalent of Uber, is forming a task force to design and implement a trial of China’s central bank digital currency (CBDC) on its transportation platform. A spokesperson of the Chinese ride-hailing mobile service told CoinDesk in an email response that it has entered into a strategic partnership with the Digital Currency Research Institute of the People’s Bank of China (PBoC) in an effort to accelerate the application of the CBDC, known as Digital Currency Electronic Payment, or DCEP. “Under PBoC’s overall DCEP strategy and operation timeline, DiDi’s DCEP taskforce will design and implement pilot DCEP projects in accordance with […]
Reports are coming out of China that its massive Three Gorges Dam is at risk of blowing, putting 400 million people at risk. Five days ago the Chinese reportedly released water at the Three Gorges Dam to alleviate pressure on the dam related to recent floods: The problem is that China once claimed the dam would withstand a 10,000 year flood, then a 1,000 year flood and now only a 100 year flood. The basis for this was reported when the damn was built: TRENDING: Nike Spokesman Colin Kaepernick’s Independence Day Message: “We Reject Your Celebration of White Supremacy” (Video) Pictures […]

New Delhi (Sputnik): On 29 June, India banned 59 Chinese mobile apps in a move widely perceived as a response to the border dispute in the Galvan valley of Ladakh. On 15 June, twenty Indian soldiers were killed in violent clash between patrol parties belonging to both sides. Since then, India is in arms against China on the economic front. China claims that India’s ban on 59 major Chinese apps, including the notorious TikTok app, the UC Browser and Shareit, among others, is a violation of World Trade Organisation (WTO) norms. Banning Chinese apps is one of a number of steps, […]
New Delhi (Sputnik): Due to the coronavirus pandemic, India’s 5G trials that were slated for early 2020 are expected to be delayed one year. For now, India is fuelled by affordable 4G networks – a new spectrum auction for which was also reported back in 2019. India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Wednesday rejected a 4G upgrade tender filed by state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). With the rejection, DoT, a subsidiary of India’s federal Ministry of Communication, has bought itself a little more time before it issues “fresh specifications” for the 4G network upgrade process. Citing “official sources”, Hindustan Times reported that […]

Last week, we imposed visa restrictions on CCP officials for undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy. We are ending defense and dual-use technology exports to the territory. […]

US envoy James F. Jeffrey’s remark that Washington is no longer seeking Assad’s ouster should be taken with a grain of salt as regime change in Syria remains America’s priority, argues international affairs and security analyst Mark Sleboda, explaining how US sanctions have accelerated the rapprochement between Syria, Russia, Iran, and China. On Tuesday, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem highlighted that the US Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act seeks nothing short of starving the citizens of the Arab Republic. Besides this, the latest batch of sanctions is targeting those engaged in reconstruction activities in the war-torn country. The Caesar Act came […]
China’s ambitious national blockchain infrastructure project has enlisted two partners to help with two of the biggest challenges with this technology. SmartContract, the company behind the Chainlink oracle network, will help the state-backed Blockchain-Based Service Network (BSN) with sourcing of reliable information about the real world. Meanwhile, Iris Foundation Ltd., an “inter-chain” services firm that integrates businesses with the Cosmos network, will assist BSN with interoperability, or allowing different systems to work in conjunction with each other. BSN previously disclosed the two firms’ involvement but it detailed their exact roles Tuesday. Each firm will lend its respective expertise to the buildout […]
China’s ambassador to the United States and a top Chinese diplomat in New York City have been facilitating their nation’s covert recruitment of scientists working in the United States, according to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court last year. The document, which was unsealed by a judge in April, provides an extraordinary window into China’s pursuit of U.S. trade secrets, shedding new light on its government-directed efforts to obtain “the fruits of cutting-edge American scientific research…which efforts involve intellectual property thefts on a massive scale.” An FBI special agent specializing in counterintelligence who signed the affidavit said the bureau received […]
The US dollar could potentially weaken against other currencies, including the Chinese yuan, if there is a resurgence of COVID-19 cases, according to Deutsche Bank’s chief Asia macro strategist. During the Monday broadcast of CNBC’s “Street Signs,” Deutsche Bank’s Sameer Goel explained that currency markets are currently dealing with “multiple cross-currents” over fears of a second COVID-19 wave. Goel’s comments come after more than 30,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the US over the weekend, CNBC reported. In addition, there has been a surge of infections in the Chinese capital of Beijing in recent weeks; more than 200 COVID-19 cases […]

HONG KONG—Reaction to that part of John Bolton’s upcoming memoir where he says Donald Trump asked Chinese Communist Party leader Xi Jinping for help in the next presidential election has been muted in China itself. The underlying sentiment is that nothing was done, and nothing needed to be done, in answer to Trump’s rather pitiful plea, and little or no comment is necessary now. Authorities in Beijing have for years thought it likely that with or without their help American voters would cast enough ballots for the tweeter-in-chief to remain in the Oval Office, and they’re perfectly happy with that. Chinese […]

The top US trade official has forcefully denied ex-national security advisor John Bolton’s allegation that the president went to his Chinese counterpart for help in the 2020 race, insisting it “never happened.” Excerpts published from Bolton’s forthcoming book on Wednesday claim that, during a sideline meeting at last year’s G-20 summit in Japan, President Donald Trump asked Chinese leader Xi Jinping to boost his country’s purchases of US agricultural goods, believing it would aid his re-election bid. Pressed about the claim at a Senate hearing later on Wednesday, Trump’s top trade envoy, Robert Lighthizer, said in no uncertain terms that the […]
The Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), the world’s largest single-dish radio telescope located in China’s Guizhou province, has detected a new fast radio burst (FRB), a radio pulse usually lasting only a few milliseconds, according to a report by the Science and Technology Daily. The discovery, recently published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, was made by an international team led by scientists including Zhu Weiwei and Li Di at the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC). Using an innovative search method integrated with deep-learning artificial intelligence technologies, scientists found the new burst, named FRB 181123, from […]
India’s military activity on China’s border is related to the domestic political situation while China’s military drills in the northwest are a response to the situation in the Himalayas, including attempts by extremist forces to rely on US support, according to analysts. Chinese and Indian senior military officials agreed to peacefully resolve the situation in the border zone following consultations on 13 June. The move comes after tensions escalated in May, resulting in several skirmishes and the deployment of additional forces to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) that roughly acts as the border between the two countries. India’s Foreign Ministry […]

New Delhi (Sputnik): In November 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi withdrew from a China-led 16-nation free trade bloc, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, blaming Beijing’s non-compromising attitude on market access. After the withdrawal, India initiated trade talks with the US that are yet to reach a logical conclusion. China’s Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) – a mega free trade agreement involving 15 nations – is likely to face an array of troubles in the post-pandemic world order as businesses may see more value in a diversified supply chain rather than a concentrated one, say analysts. A section of analysts feels […]
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The central authorities’ national security legislation will only strengthen Hong Kong’s legal system, while people’s freedoms and interests of investors will remain unaffected, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui said in an interview. According to the diplomat, the draft legislation would target an “extremely small range of activities,” namely those that endanger national security. “[The planned legislation] does not affect the autonomy of Hong Kong, nor the rights and freedom of citizens of Hong Kong, nor legal rights and interests of foreign investors in Hong Kong. On the contrary, thanks to this decision by the National People’s Congress […]
After showing the first signs of growth in April, Chinese exports fell again last month to $206.8 billion, contracting more than three percent compared with the same period a year earlier. The export data released by China’s customs agency on Sunday was still far better than economists expected, as a Reuters poll of analysts had forecast a seven percent plunge, with those surveyed by Bloomberg predicting a slightly smaller contraction. However, May’s year-on-year fall of 3.3 percent is still a steep decline from the surprise increase posted a month earlier, when exports rose 3.5 percent. Also on rt.com China vows to […]
So far, Boris Johnson’s government has been eager to allow China’s tech giant Huawei to participate in Britain’s 5G rollout despite warnings from its Five Eyes intelligence partners. But following concerns over China’s alleged role in the coronavirus pandemic, Downing Street has become increasingly cautious over its ties with Beijing. London is creating an alliance of 10 democratic countries that will task their national tech companies to supply 5G equipment as an alternative to those provided by China’s giant Huawei, the Times reported citing sources familiar with the development. The club will be dubbed “D10” and could potentially include all G7 […]
China says that its exports rebounded last month, beating most expectations of a sharp decline. However, the drop in the country’s imports accelerated as the coronavirus continues to crush demand. Data released by the General Administration of Customs shows that April’s exports surpassed $200 billion. This is a 3.5 percent rise from the previous year. Last month’s results reversed the 6.6 percent fall in March, as well as the collapse recorded at the beginning of the year. China’s exports are also much better than some economists polled by various media predicted, with the expected decline varying between 10 and nearly 19 percent. Read […]
