Repressive responses by the federal government to anti-police protests illustrate the ease with which they can charge and indict people who document their own activities on social media. The case also shows how federal […]

Dean, VT Editor, …with the Tehran Times [ Editor’s Note: The Tehran Times asked for my thoughts on the current political meltdown, which was not a hard task to fulfill as we have been wading through the election swamp for some time now. The only difficulty in such a task is how much one has to leave out, as the story runs into volume already, and we are not done yet. Just today we learned that Baron had gotten Covid, but the story was softpedaled with no explanation of how and where he got it, or could the […]

Attorney General William Barr said in a speech Wednesday that lockdowns intended to slow the spread of the new coronavirus were “the greatest intrusion on civil liberties” in the history of the United States since slavery. “You know, putting a national lockdown, stay at home orders, is like house arrest. Other than slavery, which was a different kind of restraint, this is the greatest intrusion on civil liberties in American history,” he said, according to CNN. The crowd at Hillsdale College in Michigan reportedly burst into applause. One of the hosts of the event had asked him about “constitutional hurdles for […]
There is no shortage of local topics that interest the Kremlin—from the poisoning of an inconvenient dissident, to the events in neighboring Belarus and the ongoing battle against the coronavirus. In the thick of it all, America remains front and center of the Russian state media’s steely focus. In Putin’s Russia, U.S. President Donald J. Trump’s rallies, events and press comments are viewed and reported with maniacal obsession. Russian state media happily poked fun at the Trump campaign’s use of a stock photo of Russian-made fighter jets, but aside from an occasional jab, Moscow’s coverage of the Trump presidency closely resembles […]

But his sister told the media she saw it coming. Reinoehl “attempted to escape arrest and produced a firearm” before he was killed by law enforcement, Attorney General Barr revealed in a statement released on Friday, confirming initial reports of what happened Thursday night when a fugitive task force swept in to arrest him in Lacey, Washington. The self-professed Antifa member, suspected of killing Patriot Prayer “friend and supporter” Aaron ‘Jay’ Danielson […]

On Saturday morning, protesters showed up to the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Los Angeles, carrying signs. To passing drivers, the scene looked pretty typical. There have been protests in Los Angeles nearly every day since the civil uprising in June over police brutality, and the signs’ language resembled slogans popularized by the Black Lives Matter movement. One woman scrawled “CARE NOW” on her cardboard. Another sign read: “DEFUND HOLLYWOOD.” Among the crowd was a 28-year-old resident of Phoenix, Arizona, named Tara Nicole, one of the event’s organizers. She passed out water bottles, fliers, and signs labeled “Freedom […]

John Lewis, who spent his life and career as a civil servant battling tirelessly for civil rights, died Friday at the age of 80. Late Saturday morning, after hours of silence, the White House issued a proclamation calling for the flag to fly at half-staff on White House and public grounds, military posts, and more. The document, made public as the president golfed at his club in Virginia, is about as impersonal as it gets. “As a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding public service of Representative John Lewis, of Georgia” the statement reads, “I hereby order, by the […]

Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of the Huawei founder, was arrested in Canada’s Vancouver in December of 2018 at the US’ request. Her detention came amid the US trade war with China and accusations that Huawei posed a threat to US national security, a claim which the company denied. The arrest also soured China’s ties with Ottawa. Facebook had the chance to curb voter suppression targeting Black Americans ahead of the 2020 presidential election. Instead, it stumbled on that and other civil liberties issues, according to a new independent civil rights audit released on Wednesday. The audit, commissioned by Facebook and conducted over two years by civil rights experts and lawyers, comes as Facebook faces public ire for racism and disinformation on the site, with major advertisers cutting ties with the company. Although the social media giant took some steps to curb hate speech and prevent election meddling after the 2016 election, it also committed significant oversights, the […]
Facebook failed to remove three posts by the US President Donald Trump that “allowed the propagation of hate/violent speech and facilitated voter suppression,” causing concern among the civil rights community, a new report says. A fresh audit of Facebook’s policies and practices, commissioned by the world’s largest social media platform itself in 2018, has on 8 July yielded results. The Civil Rights Audit, led by Laura W. …by Jonas E. Alexis The collapse of the black family we alluded to in an earlier article is inextricably linked to the rise of the Civil Rights Movement. In his sociological study “The Origins of African-American Family Structure,” sociologist and historian Steven Ruggles of the University of Minnesota documents that from 1880 until 1960, married households with two-parent homes were the general rule of the black family structures.[1] Others have argued that in 1880, black families were nuclear families in places like Philadelphia. “Two parent households were generally more common among ex-slaves. Taken together, two-parent households were found 80 percent of […]

United Skates, a 2019 documentary film highlighting the history of black roller skating rinks, opens with a shot that is all-too-prescient for this summer of Black Lives Matter demonstrations: police sirens. Co-founder Matthew Iles announced the shutdown in a blog post, writing, “It’s with a heavy heart that I announce the end of Civil.” Iles, who told CoinDesk he had no further comment after the publication of this article, wrote that the company, which had previously inked partnerships with Forbes and AP, had not been able to find a path to sustainability. The PM was defending his adviser, Dominic Cummings, who’s been reported to police for breaking lockdown rules. Cummings has been hounded by the British press and urged to resign since it emerged on Friday that he’d traveled 250 miles from London to his parents’ farm in Durham in April. His journey flouted the national coronavirus lockdown, and took place while he was supposed to be isolating at home due to his wife’s Covid-19 symptoms. Prime Minister Boris Johnson defended his embattled adviser […]

Though she stopped short of issuing an official order, Ferrer said the timetable would not shift until officials see a “dramatic change to the virus and tools at hand,” stressing the need for increased testing capacity. Our hope is that by using the data, […]
