The U.S. Navy has awarded Bell-Boeing Joint Project Office a $309.5 million contract to produce additional CMV-22B Osprey aircraft, according to the U.S. Department of Defense contract announcements. The contract modification award from Naval Air Systems Command enables the company to provides manufacture and delivery of four CMV-22B multi-engine, dual-piloted, self-deployable, medium lift, vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) tilt-rotor aircraft for the Navy. A U.S. Navy CMV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft conducted its first take-off from an aircraft carrier, according to a press release issued Friday by the service press department. For the first time, the Navy version of the Osprey, vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) tilt-rotor aircraft conducted the first ever landings, take-offs, and refueling from the flight deck of Nimitz-class nuclear aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70). The U.S. Navy’s first operational CMV-22B tilt-rotor aircraft, the latest variant in Osprey family, assigned to Fleet Logistics Multi-Mission Squadron 30 arrived at Naval Air Station North Island. The new aircraft is designed to replace ageing C-2 Greyhound carrier onboard delivery aircraft. It is the only aircraft that can land on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier with the F-35C engine power module safely secured inside its fuselage and provide roll-on/roll-off delivery.
