A newly discovered document provides more evidence that Western governments broke their promise not to expand NATO eastward after German reunification. Notes from a 1991 meeting between top US, British, French, and German officials confirm that there was a “general agreement that membership of NATO and security guarantees [are] unacceptable” for Central and Eastern Europe. Germany’s diplomatic representative emphasized that the Soviet Union was promised in 1990 that “we would not extend NATO beyond the Elbe” river, in eastern Germany. The document, which was formerly classified as secret, comes from the British National Archives. It was made widely known this February […]

Sputnik International https://sputniknews.com/science/202010181080809731-hint-of-the-existence-of-life-on-venus-reportedly-discovered-by-scientists/ The researchers suggested that their findings could be confirmed by a mission to Venus that would collect samples from the planet’s “surface and cloud”. A team of scientists has announced the discovery of a certain amino acid in Venus’ atmosphere, which may or may not possibly hint at the presence of life on that planet, Science Alert reports. According to the media outlet, the amino acid in question, glycine, is the simplest of the amino acids present in the genetic code, adding that while amino acids are not biosignatures, they serve as […]
An Afghan refugee-turned-famous Swedish expert on education and integration, Hamid Zafar, has had his perfect public image ruined after a local newspaper discovered hateful comments he had been posting online under a pseudonym. Zafar arrived in Sweden as a refugee child and rose to prominence as a symbol of successful integration. Brought up in what is being described as a “socially vulnerable” district of Gothenburg, the man took charge of a troubled local school and became known throughout Sweden simply as ‘Rector Hamid’. His career has been on the rise ever since: between working at the Swedish Schools Inspectorate and giving […]
The Medinet Habu temple was built in honour of pharaoh Ramses III, considered to be the last great monarch of the Egyptian Empire. Ramses III played a key role in Egypt’s victory over invaders known as the Sea Peoples. A mural that has been recently discovered in an Egyptian temple sheds light on the Kingdom of “one of Israel’s greatest enemies” – the Philistines, said Tom Meyer, professor of Bible studies at Shasta Bible College and Graduate School in California. According to Meyer, the 3,200-year-old mural gives an insight “into the fashion, employment, clothing, weaponry, instruments, modes of transportation and livestock […]

In the comments to the photo, some users expressed their admiration for the art of the spider, while others said that on a dark night, a person could get caught in such a web. Environmentalists asked people to be careful with the spiderwebs, as their hosts help contain insect […]

At least seven mail-in military ballots marked for President Donald Trump were found discarded in Pennsylvania, the Justice Department has confirmed. Trump also called attention to thrown-out absentee ballots in Wisconsin. The DOJ confirmed local reports that nine military mail-in ballots had been recovered by investigators in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania on Thursday. Seven had been marked for Trump, and two were sealed in their envelopes, with the voter’s selection not visible. Not all of the ballots could be attributed to specific voters. The department’s inquiry is reportedly “ongoing,” and US Attorney David Freed promised to share the results with county officials […]

Federal authorities are investigating after ricin, a deadly toxin, was discovered in mail intended for the White House. The Secret Service intercepted the envelope which was positively identified with mail meant for the White House, law enforcement sources tell NPR. The ricin never made it to White House grounds, but authorities are still searching for other undiscovered dangerous packages that may be linked to the ricin. Law enforcement sources also said investigators are narrowing down suspects, but have made no arrests. Both the White House and Secret Service are declining to comment. A peculiar phenomenon has been discovered by astronomers in the depths of space, amid the merger of two galaxy clusters, Science Alert reports. According to the media outlet, the phenomenon in question is a “low-frequency radio ‘bridge'” that spans a distance of about 6.5 million light years between the two clusters and serves as “evidence of a magnetic field connecting them in the early stage of the merging process”. “We confirm the presence of a giant […]
A recently published research paper in the journal PLOS One analyzed the Grand Canyon’s oldest fossilized animal footprints, which are believed to have been left around 313 million years ago by early amniotes, a clade of tetrapod vertebrates that laid their eggs on land. The two sets of footprints were discovered in 2016 by geologist Allan Krill while he was hiking with students in Arizona’s Grand Canyon. Analysis of the footprints by Steve Rowland, a professor emeritus of geology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, revealed that they were both potentially left behind by the same unknown species. The footprints […]

A tiny, ancient ancestor of the dinosaur has been discovered in Madagascar, providing a stark contrast to the iconic, behemoth size for which many dinosaurs are known. The unearthing of the pint-sized predator Kongonaphon kely, which lived roughly 237 million years ago, may provide scientists with information about the ancestors of dinosaurs, as well as the flying reptiles known as pterosaurs, according to a study published on Monday, reported USA Today. Known for their remarkable size, dinosaurs “include the largest known land animals, and their relatives, the pterosaurs, include the largest creatures to ever fly,” the researchers wrote. However, the animals’ […]
The discovery has further perplexed historians as to what happened to the remains of les guillotinés. It’s believed that many of the revolutionaries who were executed at the Place de la Révolution were moved from a cemetery to the Paris Catacombs, but these remains found in the walls of the Chapelle Expiatoire have inspired further excavations. The remains of up to 500 people guillotined during the French Revolution are now believed to be buried in the walls of a 19th century chapel in Paris, according to archaeologists. Archaeologists Discover Details of Buried Roman City Without Digging by Courtney Sexton/Smithsonianmag.com Rome wasn’t built in a day, and, apparently, neither was Falerii Novi. Thanks to new radar imaging technology, researchers have uncovered the buried remains of this intricately planned, walled Roman city without lifting a single shovel. As detailed in the journal Antiquity, archaeologists from the University of Cambridge and Ghent University mapped the complete ancient city using ground-penetrating radar (GPR). Just as X-rays can reveal skeletal damage without doctors needing to cut open a patient, GPR uses radio waves that enable researchers to explore covered ruins without excavating. The technology’s radar antenna […]
