Eleven hundred workers who manufacture agricultural and construction equipment for CNH Industrial in Burlington, Iowa, and Racine, Wisconsin, have been on strike since May 2. At the core of the strike is the company’s three-tier pay system. Workers hired before 1996 make $6 to $8 more per hour than those hired after 2004; those hired between 1996 and 2004 earn somewhere in between. Workers want to see at least the bottom tier abolished. On Wednesday, Yerevan stated that the Azerbaijani Army had attacked Armenian military equipment situated on Armenian territory. The Armenian Ministry of Defence stressed the country’s forces reserved the right to attack any military object on Azerbaijani territory. The decades-old frozen conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh or the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh escalated on 27 September, after both Baku and Yerevan accused each other of sparking military hostilities. US police departments taking advantage of the ability to acquire Washington’s surplus military equipment could very well be contributing to unrest and violence in the same communities they are sworn to protect, according to a new analysis. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution revealed on Thursday that data from the US military and police departments nationwide presented a disturbing relationship between police killings and the US Department of Defense’s 1033 program – an initiative that allows everyday law enforcement to acquire surplus equipment designed for war. “The results paint a troubling picture: The more equipment a department receives, the more people are shot and […]

Unfortunately, this article also uses terms like the “Assad regime” and tries to portray it as ‘brutal.’ This is typical for mainstream media coverage of countries that are targeted by western imperialism and should be recognized for the propaganda that it is. – MF […]

New Delhi (Sputnik): Amid border tensions, India is considering the participation of Chinese tech players like Huawei and ZTE in the sharpening and development of its 4G and 5G networks. At this time, India’s state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is clouded by risks of losing non-Chinese equipment maker Nokia over unpaid dues. Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia, which controls 40 percent of BSNL networks in India, has threatened to pull support if dues mounting over $121 million are not cleared “immediately” by the Indian state-run telco. In a letter addressing BSNL Chairman PK Purwar, Nokia has also warned that if […]
In 2017 Sepura, which produces digital mobile radio products, was bought by Chinese company Hytera, in which Beijing government has 2 percent stake. Hytera has been banned by the United States over concerns that its equipment may be used for surveillance. The United Kingdom continues to use equipment produced by the Sepura company, including radios used by police officers, in particular, during protection of members of the royal family, the British media have reported. Systems and applications are used by British ambulance and fire services in airports, despite the fact that Sepura’s owner, Hytera, was blacklisted by the White House, which […]

Police departments that get more equipment from the military kill more civilians than departments that get less military gear. That’s the finding from research on a federal program that has operated since 1997 that I have helped conduct as a scholar of police militarization. That finding was recently confirmed and expanded by Edward Lawson Jr. at the University of South Carolina. This federal effort is called the “1033 Program.” It’s named after the section of the 1997 National Defense Authorization Act that allows the U.S. Defense Department to give police agencies around the country equipment, including weapons and ammunition, that the […]
