Above Photo: U.S. Secretary of Defense. That’s what should have been the biggest news of 2021. Instead, the story, which broke on November 17, was largely ignored or buried. The nation’s two main newspapers, the Washington Post and the New York Times, have simply ignored it. Other news organizations stenographically quoted Pentagon officials as admitting that they “failed again” but saw “progress,” and as promising that they would achieve a “clean” audit by… get this … 2027. The Pentagon, with some $3 trillion (give or take a trillion but who’s counting?) in assets and a record current 2021 budget of $738 […]

Autonomous weapon systems – commonly known as killer robots – may have killed human beings for the first time ever last year, according to a recent United Nations Security Council report on the Libyan civil war. History could well identify this as the starting point of the next major arms race, one that has the potential to be humanity’s final one. The United Nations Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons debated the question of banning autonomous weapons at its once-every-five-years review meeting in Geneva Dec. 13-17, […]
Above Photo: Antara Raman. What the media can never openly admit is that the largest peaceful democratic protest the world has seen in years – certainly the greatest organised at the height of the pandemic – has won a mighty victory. A victory that carries forward a legacy. Farmers of all kinds, men and women – including from Adivasi and Dalit communities – played a crucial role in this country’s struggle for freedom. And in the 75th year of our Independence, the farmers at Delhi’s gates reiterated the spirit of that great struggle. Prime Minister Modi has announced he is backing […]

Though the 2020 elections set a new record for voter turnout, more people still chose not to vote than supported either candidate. This shows yet again that the bipartisan political regime of the U.S. has nothing to offer to most of the working class and oppressed. While it is now abundantly clear that Joe Biden has won the electoral college by a hefty margin, many questions remain about who voted in the election and why. As we begin to analyze […]

Elected representatives across the UK have called on the government to prevent poverty by trialling Universal Basic Income (UBI). On 30 October, 520 MPs, councillors, peers, mayors and members of devolved assemblies, wrote to chancellor Rishi Sunak. They emphasised how current government support is leaving many families in poverty. In the letter, organised by UBI Lab Network, the elected representatives said: Millions of people have fallen through […]
Despite over a year of failing to stop hostilities, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky believes that he will be able to end the war in Donbass, and says someone else should lead the country if he can’t. Speaking to the BBC, Zelensky also claimed that he will be able to make a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin and return Crimea to the control of Kiev. “I believe in this. Otherwise, I would not have run for Ukrainian President,” Zelensky said. “This is very difficult, and we need the help of the whole world, that’s true. But I’m not losing faith.” The […]
Chris Wallace’s moderation of the first presidential debate left a lot to be desired, with critics renewing calls for podcaster/comedian Joe Rogan to handle an upcoming event between President Donald Trump and his rival Joe Biden. Minutes after Tuesday night’s debate ended, Rogan’s name was trending on Twitter with supporters saying he could have handled the night’s proceedings far better than Wallace, who struggled on multiple occasions to keep Trump and Biden from bickering and interrupting each other. “Regardless who you’re pulling for, I think we can all agree that Joe Rogan would do a much better job moderating this thing […]
US Ambassador David Satterfield is treating Turkey like a colony, Ankara’s health minister Fahrettin Koca said, commenting on the escalating row over the skyrocketing debt Turkey owes to American drug companies. “What the ambassador did is neither correct nor ethical. He is using manipulation at a time when we are holding talks with drug companies. He may be able to do such acts in colonies, but this is not such a country,” Koca told reporters on Friday, while visiting the Black Sea province of Samsun. An American-made Javelin anti-tank missile malfunctioned during a major military exercise attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Northern Command, Major General Valery Zaluzhny, confirmed the incident to local media. “The Javelin didn’t work. The missile didn’t fly out. Maybe, it was a mistake by the operator. Maybe, it was something else. We have to figure it out,” Zaluzhny said. President Zelensky attended the ongoing Joint Efforts 2020 military drill in the country’s Nikolaev region. Around 12,000 are participating in the exercise. The drill was described by Zelensky’s website as “the first exercise conducted in […]
Fox News host Sean Hannity tried multiple times on Wednesday to ridicule Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden for supposedly pandering to Hispanic voters by playing the pop smash “Despacito,” only to undercut his own attempts with unforced errors each time. Amid concerns that Biden is hemorrhaging support among Hispanic voters, especially in Florida, the former vice president made his first campaign appearance in the Sunshine State on Tuesday. Marking the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, Biden kicked off his speech by firing up “Despacito” on his phone, even dancing along to it a bit. The moment quickly went viral, with critics […]
Hot on the heels of a coronavirus scare, Julian Assange’s extradition hearing was postponed on Monday following a farcical videolink failure which meant the court could not hear the testimony of a prominent witness. The court was hearing from witness Eric Lewis, an experienced US lawyer, when out of the blue it was interrupted by a Fox News video about WikiLeaks. The source of the unexpected interruption was never revealed and the court went into recess in a bid to resolve the technical difficulties. Lewis was expected to give evidence that Assange would face a “flagrant denial of justice” if put […]
China launched a new high-resolution remote sensing satellite for the Jilin-1 satellite constellation on Saturday morning from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. However, the solid fuelled Kuaizhou-1A launch was declared a failure after several hours of waiting for information from Chinese state media. No specifics were noted other than the rocket failed to deliver the satellite into the designated orbit. Also known as Neimenggu-1 – Inner Mongolia 1 – the Jilin-1 Gaofen-02C is a result of the cooperation between the Changguang Satellite Technology Co., Ltd. and People’s Government of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. With its high resolution, large width, and high-speed data […]
Following the cancellation of Northrop Grumman’s OmegA rocket, work to demolish the vehicle’s launch tower on a repurposed former Shuttle program Mobile Launch Platform (MLP) will mark the erasure of the program from the Kennedy Space Center (KSC). It was hoped OmegA would allow the “clean pad” at 39B to fall under the assigned mandate of a ‘Multi-User Spaceport’. Instead, 39B will now only see a maximum of one SLS launch per year. OmegA’s short life ended when Northrop Grumman lost out on the National Security Space Launch award from the U.S. Space Force, which was split between ULA and SpaceX. […]

While US officials claim that their recent sanctioning of former Lebanese government ministers was designed to expose the corruption of the country’s politicians, one expert tells Sputnik that Washington’s recent action is nothing more than a continuation of a longstanding, but unsuccessful, Western campaign to control Lebanon. US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenke declared on Tuesday that political allies of Hezbollah will have to “choose between bullets and ballots,” as they stand to be held “accountable for any enabling of [Hezbollah’s] terrorist and illicit activities,” Arab News reported. This came amid the two-day Lebanon leg of […]
US President Donald Trump has hinted that he could invoke a law allowing federal troops to be deployed against local authorities’ wishes after Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler demanded he “stays away” from the violence-plagued city. “If the incompetent Mayor of Portland, Ted Wheeler, doesn’t get control of his city and stop the Anarchists, Agitators, Rioters and Looters, causing great danger to innocent people, we will go in and take care of matters the way they should have been taken care of 100 days ago!” Trump tweeted on Friday. Twitter pundit Rob Gill – apparently triggered by a conspiracy theorist who sees Russian bogeymen behind every evil act – has threatened mob justice if the teenager charged with shooting three protesters in Wisconsin is acquitted. “Kyle Rittenhouse will be served justice and pay for his crimes, either by the justice system or by his fellow Americans,” Gill tweeted on Friday. The Black Lives Matter supporter, who has more than 25,000 followers on Twitter, blocked replies to his message. He later took his tweets into social-media hiding, allowing only approved followers to see his recent and former posts, amid heavy backlash. […]
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Technodinamika holding company, which is part of Russia’s state-owned high-tech conglomerate Rostec, has deployed a 5,000-square-meter Russian flag in the sky over the Moscow region, but the record was not registered in the Guinness Book due to sanctions against Moscow, the company’s press service said on Saturday. The current record belongs to the representatives of the United Arab Emirates who opened in the sky the national flag of about 4,886 square meters. “The invited experts of the Guinness Book of World Records captured the record, but refused to officially register it due to the sanctions against Russia,” the […]

The UN Security Council has failed to adopt a Russian-drafted resolution that seeks to authorise the cross-border humanitarian aid delivery mechanism in northwestern Syria from Turkey through one crossing for a year. In January, the Security Council reduced the number of border crossings from the initial four, including al-Ramtha from Jordan and al-Yarubiyah from Iraq, to only two checkpoints from Turkey. China’s new solid rocket motor Kuaizhou-11 launch vehicle has failed on its first mission. China conducted the inaugural launch of the long-delayed Kuaizhou-11 (KZ-11) rocket at 04:17 UTC from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Friday, carrying two satellites, before confirming the failure of the mission in the latter stages of flight, although specifics are not yet forthcoming. This was the third launch failure for China in 2020. This follows the loss of Xinjishu Yanzheng-6 satellite on the inaugural launch of the Chang Zheng-7A launch vehicle out of Wenchang on March 16 and the loss of the Indonesian Palapa-N1 communications satellite […]

The US will leave the World Health Organization in almost exactly a year, the UN has confirmed, after President Donald Trump finalized the country’s withdrawal over its “failure” to blame China for the coronavirus pandemic. After issuing a 30-day ultimatum in May demanding the WHO get tough on China, which his administration has blamed for attempting to conceal the deadly Covid-19 outbreak, Trump has begun the process of extricating the US from the global health body. The UN confirmed the move on Tuesday, adding that the US will officially leave the WHO on July 6 of 2021. Also on rt.com Plot […]
Rumors that the National Football League plans to play the ‘Black national anthem’ before games once it returns have failed to please anyone, with people either considering it divisive or not going far enough to fight racism. The NFL plans to have ‘Lift Every Voice And Sing’ performed live or played before every Week 1 game, ESPN reported on Thursday, citing “a source familiar with the league’s discussions.” The move would be just one of the measures Commissioner Roger Godell is considering to raise awareness of “systemic racism.” Other contemplated moves include listing the names of African-Americans killed by police on […]
Following months of privacy concerns raised by both state and private actors, online video company Zoom, which has seen its user numbers spike during the Covid-19 pandemic, has missed its own transparency report deadline. Zoom announced last month that it would publish a transparency report on June 30. The move followed the company admitting that it had briefly suspended some US-based accounts and that of a Hong Kong activist at the behest of the Chinese government. The accounts were suspended due to the content of the calls, with one speaking on the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square protests, which remain a […]
William Barr does not seem concerned that people know he is unethical, but he treasures his reputation as a ruthlessly effective fixer for Donald Trump. As the events of recent weeks have made plain, however, that reputation is undeserved. When Trump nominated Barr to serve as attorney general in 2018, many expressed hope that this “old Washington hand” would return respect for the rule of law to the Department of Justice. Barr swiftly burst that balloon by baldly lying about Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s findings, even as he hid them for weeks. Since then, Barr has thoroughly trashed his reputation for […]
After a failed bid to remove barricades from Seattle’s protester encampment – in which municipal workers were blocked by demonstrators – the city’s mayor said they will try again Sunday, soon after being hit with another lawsuit. Friday morning saw protesters at the “Capitol Hill Occupied Protest” (CHOP) stand-off with city workers who’d arrived to clear away street barriers set up around the zone, with one activist seen laying in the road to stop equipment from entering the area. Following the tense interaction and a lengthy meeting with protesters, however, Mayor Jenny Durkan now says the barricades will come down over […]
A police reform bill proposed by Senator Tim Scott (R-South Carolina) failed on a procedural vote due to opposition from Democrats, who said it does not go far enough. Wednesday’s vote on the cloture motion was 55 in favor and 45 against, with 60 votes needed to move the bill forward. DETAILS TO FOLLOW Source link
With Galaxy Digital now working on an educational course for financial advisers, founder Mike Novogratz told CoinDesk he hopes it will help finally kick-start the institutional use of bitcoin, and turn around the asset manager’s fortunes. Novogratz, a Wall Street veteran, loves a compelling narrative. “Bitcoin specifically is a story about adoption,” he said a few minutes into our call. “And the next big group that’s going to adopt bitcoin as a store of value, as a digital gold, are the financial advisers.” Earlier this week, Galaxy Digital announced it had partnered with the educational arm of CAIS, a financial product […]
Thibault Schrepel is a Faculty Associate at Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society and Assistant Professor in Antitrust Law at Utrecht University School of Law. The COVID-19 crisis has increased our reliance on technology and reinforced the place of code in organizing society. This need not be a negative thing. As Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin and I argue in a recent research paper, computer scripts can help complement laws and facilitate human interactions. Blockchain tech, for example, can be used to reach some goals of antitrust law – which seeks to improve competition in the marketplace – where […]
Ripple and CEO Brad Garlinghouse say an ongoing lawsuit fails to show how Garlinghouse committed fraud when allegedly selling millions of dollars’ worth of XRP in 2017. Lawyers representing the San Francisco-based blockchain company said in a court motion Monday that lead plaintiff Bradley Sostack has not demonstrated how a series of supposedly fraudulent statements made by Garlinghouse and Ripple employees were anything of the kind. In the U.S., the threshold for what can be considered fraud is based on Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 9(b), which stipulates a plaintiff must show two things: first, how fraud was actually committed; second, […]

President Trump said early Friday morning he would send National Guard troops to Minneapolis to stop the rioting over the police killing of George Floyd if Mayor Jacob Frey did not act to save his city. Trump said he spoke with Gov. Tim Walz this evening. Trump and Attorney General William Barr are reported to be closely monitoring the investigation into Floyd’s death. Thursday marked the third day of riots and protests since Floyd died in police custody Monday night after an officer pinned him on the pavement with a knee on his neck until he stopped breathing.
