BDS news from Ohio State and Princeton, as well as ongoing fallout from the Middle East Studies Association’s endorsement of boycott. On April 7 the student government at Ohio State University passed a resolution calling on the school to divest from companies connected to human rights abuses in Palestine. The two companies targeted are Hewlett Packard Enterprise, who provides technology to the Israeli military, and Caterpillar Inc., whose bulldozers are used to demolish Palestinian homes. “The passage of this resolution is merely one milestone on the long journey to the Palestinian people’s eventual […]

In a game that took place over eight months after the death of Kobe Bryant, superstar LeBron James captured his fourth NBA title while playing with his third team. Los Angeles Lakers won their 17th NBA championship, beating Miami Heat 106-93 on Sunday. The team’s first since 2010 victory tied them with the Boston Celtics for most champion titles in history. Lakers celebrated the victory, rolling out a Twitter post and saying that “job’s finished”. The team praised its superstar, LeBron James, who fueled the Lakers with a triple-double of 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists, who has been named […]
HONG KONG—In a rare act of bipartisanship, Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) passed a resolution on Tuesday calling for the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to reestablish formal diplomatic relations with the United States, two and a half weeks after Chinese state media issued a threat against the personal safety of Taiwan’s president. Multiple factors explain the two parties’ convergence for the bill, and they all point to the Chinese Communist Party’s aggression toward Taiwan. On every day for more than two weeks, warplanes dispatched by China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force breached Taiwan’s air defense […]
Pope Francis sounded downright woke in parts of a newly released encyclical – railing against free market, private property, racism and social injustice – but he couldn’t get through the title without offending some observers. Francis said the Covid-19 pandemic proved that free-market policies have failed to produce the societal benefits promised by their proponents. “The marketplace, by itself, cannot resolve every problem, however much we are asked to believe this dogma of neoliberal faith,” the pope wrote in his third encyclical, called “Fratelli Tutti,” to all Catholic bishops. So-called “trickle-down” economics fail to create promised “spillover” that resolves inequality, giving […]

Democratic nominee Joe Biden snapped at President Donald Trump at the first presidential debate held in Cleveland on Tuesday. In a video that has immediately gone viral, the former vice president was speaking about the Supreme Court as President Trump made attempts to cut him off, asking repeatedly, “Who’s on your list, Joe?” The footage catches the very moment Biden apparently loses his […]

AMMAN (Sputnik) – The recent powerful blast at an ammunition warehouse in the Jordanian city of Zarqa, northeast of the Amman capital, has been blamed on the high temperature, according to an initial investigation, a senior military source in the General Command of the country’s Armed Forces said on Friday. “According to a preliminary investigation, the explosion has been caused by the extremely high temperature, as a result of which a reaction of chemical elements inside one of the mortar shells occurred, what then led to the explosion,” the source said, as quoted by Petra. Earlier in the day, the state-run […]
The European Environment Agency (EEA) on Tuesday revealed that environmental factors like air pollution and heat waves are responsible for around 13% of all deaths in Europe. Guy McPherson, scientist and professor emeritus of natural resources and ecology at the University of Arizona, joined Radio Sputnik Wednesday to discuss the report. According to the report, a total of 630,000 deaths in the European Union and Britain were caused by environmental factors in 2012, which is the latest year for which data was available. “These deaths are preventable and can be significantly reduced through efforts to improve environmental quality,” the report noted, […]

Some Colorado residents woke up to something that felt crazy after sweltering through the Labor Day weekend: snow. This roller coaster forecast was “truly something that I’ve never seen,” says assistant state climatologist Becky Bolinger. In Fort Collins, the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University measured .3 inches of snow this morning, “the earliest accumulating snow ever observed in over 130 years of records!” That followed a high of 99 degrees Sunday, the highest temperature ever observed so late in September. The National Weather Service says Fort Collins hit 100 degrees on Saturday. In Denver, it’s been 20 years since […]

The record temperature was measured in Woodland Hills, northwest of downtown Los Angeles. The “kiln-like” heat was exacerbated by a high-pressure system and a weak sea breeze, according to the […]

Mosquitoes flying free as health departments focus on virus By Anna Maria Barry-Jester and Lauren Weber/AP News Bug spray, swollen welts, citronella. It’s mosquito season. And in a normal year, the health department serving Ohio’s Delaware County would be setting out more than 90 mosquito traps a week — black tubs of stagnant water with nets designed to ensnare the little buggers. But this year, because of COVID-19, the mosquitoes will fly free. The coronavirus has pulled the staffers away, so they haven’t set a single trap yet this year, according to Dustin Kent, the program manager of the residential services […]

Actor Dean Cain, who portrayed Superman for a 1990s TV show, has set Twitter ablaze after arguing that modern ‘cancel culture’ would have outlawed the superhero’s catchphrase – “Truth, justice and the American way.” Speaking with Fox’s Ainsley Earhard on Thursday, the conservative actor took aim at ‘cancel culture,’ dubbing it “like an early version of George Orwell’s 1984” which would have barred the 90s-era character from uttering his iconic slogan. “I promise you that Superman – I wouldn’t today be allowed to say: ‘Truth, justice, and the American way,’” Cain said, responding to a recent op-ed in Time Magazine calling […]

Researchers in Israel say they’ve created a face mask that kills the Covid-19 virus with heat. The virus-zapping mask has a USB port that allows a power source such as a phone charger to be connected to it. Once powered, it takes 30 minutes for the mask to heat up to a temperature that will kill the virus (70 degrees Celsius or 158 degrees Fahrenheit), thereby disinfecting its inner layer of carbon fibres. Professor Yair Ein-Eli, who led the research team at Technion, the Israeli Institute of Technology, in Haifa, explained that one of the main problems with the typical disposable […]

Minnesota Democrat Ilhan Omar has joined a growing call to disband the Minneapolis police force, arguing it is “beyond reform” after the killing of George Floyd. Critics have pilloried the suggestion as dangerous and “asinine.” The congresswoman took to Twitter on Friday to endorse an op-ed penned by a Minneapolis councilman, which urged the dissolution of the city’s police department and “start fresh” after years of failed efforts at reform. Such improvements are impossible under a “system that is rotten,” Omar said. CDC head Robert Redfield has faced wrath online after urging protesters to be tested for Covid-19 and lamenting that his agency’s message is not getting through. He was reminded of the CDC’s own clumsy response to the crisis. During a congressional hearing on the government’s handling of the pandemic on Thursday, Redfield told lawmakers he was “very concerned” that the CDC’s message on the virus is not “resonating” with the public. He warned that crowded anti-police brutality demonstrations held in scores of cities over the last week could propel a spike in new cases. “I do think there is a potential, […]
