…from PressTV, Tehran [ Editor’s Note: Color me surprised. This is the first time I have ever seen a missile ‘disappear’ on launch due to its speed being faster than the eye could see. But it is a long way from having the technology and a good launch, to have enough produced and deployed to enjoy the added defense fruits of the labor. Russia has to operate under the reality of having significantly fewer weapons than the US and NATO. Russia actually decreased its defense budget for the year. The flip side to that is it has significantly lower production costs […]

LONDON – Rolls-Royce has formed a strategic partnership with British hypersonic-power experts Reaction Engines and is backing that up with a new investment in the company. The new partnership is aimed at developing high-speed propulsion systems for defense and civil applications as well as exploring Reaction Engines’ key thermal management technology as part of Rolls-Royce’s own gas turbine engines and hybrid-electric systems. Rolls-Royce will invest £20 million ($26 million) over the next two years, building on an initial equity investment made in 2018. Other investors like BAE Systems, Boeing Horizon-X and financial institutions could follow suit, said a Reaction Engines spokesman. The announcement comes as Rolls-Royce steps up its interest in supersonic flight. […]
Eyebrows already askew were raised even further last week when the US Air Force quietly but quickly withdrew a request for information that seemed to suggest it was looking to build a hypersonic nuclear weapon. On August 12, the US Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (NWC), the agency that manages the service’s arsenal of aircraft-based and land-based nuclear weapons, posted a request for information (RFI) on the public solicitation website Beta.sam.gov asking for companies to submit ideas in seven different categories for potential upgrades to an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). While a ballistic missile can be armed with a conventional warhead, […]
The U.S. Air Force has taken another important step towards the purchase of a new hypersonic weapon, according to a recent service news release. On Saturday, the 412th Test Wing press release said that Air Force conducted a captive-carry flight test of the AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon Instrumented Measurement Vehicle 2 at the Point Mugu Sea Range off the Southern California coast. The flight resulted in the successful transmission of telemetry and GPS data from the AGM-183A IMV-2 (Instrumented Measurement Vehicle) to Point Mugu Sea Range ground stations. The test verified system integration with the B-52 launch platform and telemetry […]

The test, according to the Pentagon, marked a “major milestone” in the US path to acquiring hypersonic weaponry. The US Army has unveiled a new video of a March common hypersonic glide body (C-HGB) test in Hawaii. The new footage, presented at the annual Space and Missile Defence (SMD) Symposium, shows the moment the projectile hits its designated target in flight. WASHINGTON — The Missile Defense Agency has paused its effort to design a defensive hypersonic missile and wants to refocus its plan of attack by concentrating on near-term options that could feed into a more “elegant” solution, according to Vice Adm. Jon Hill, the organization’s director. The agency tapped industry in January to design and build an interceptor capable of defending against regional hypersonic weapons threats, releasing a draft request for proposals to build prototypes. The request directed industry to submit whitepapers by March 19 to build a Hypersonic Defense Regional Glide Phase Weapons System interceptor. The plan then was to […]
The tests of Russia’s ship-based Zircon missile – one of several hypersonic weapons introduced in the country’s military – are successfully nearing completion, the Defense Ministry said. The recent test firings, which were performed from aboard the Admiral Gorshkov frigate, have “confirmed the unique tactical and technical characteristics of this missile, as well as its ability to travel at hypersonic speeds,” the MoD said in a statement. The Zircon will be able to reach speeds of up to Mach 9, nine times faster than the speed of sound. It will have an operational range of 1,000km, hitting both water and land-based […]

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The US military recently tested a hypersonic missile that flew 17 times faster than the speed of sound, CNN reported citing a senior defense official. The defence official, according to Thursday’s report, said they tested a hypersonic glide body that was a success. The report added that the missile test was conducted in March over the Pacific Ocean. The official touted the new missile as “hard to defend against” with using the conventional defence systems because of an unpredictable trajectory. “Trying to defend against a hypersonic vehicle, that uncertainty in trajectory, becomes very difficult to deal with and […]

Japan’s Vice Defense Minister also posted a picture to its Twitter account that included what looked like a hypersonic guided missile able to attack both ships or ground targets. According to a local source, this is a new hypersonic anti-ship missile developing by Acquisition, […]

Sputnik/Moscow: On Thursday, Iran’s Navy reported the successful testing of a new land-to-sea and sea-to-sea cruise missile in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean. Iran will soon begin the manufacture of a new class of supersonic cruise missiles known as the Talaeey-e to complement the subsonic weapons currently in service, Navy Commander Rear Adm. Hossein Khanzadi has announced. “In the near future, we have on the agenda the production of supersonic missiles, which use Turbofan engines to fly several times the speed of sound,” the commander said, his comments cited by Iranian media. According to Khanzadi, the missiles’ engines will receive […]
A hypersonic missile prototype under development at the Pentagon’s shadowy research arm reportedly detached from a heavy bomber in mid-flight during a test, destroying the high-tech and secretive munition. The ill-fated test saw the missile – a Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC), a joint project of the Air Force and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) – “inadvertently” separate from the B-52 carrying it and crash to the ground below, according to a report at Aviation Week. Though DARPA declined to provide further details, stating all information on the flight demonstration is classified, the mishap is thought to have occurred […]
The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the US Air Force (USAF) are searching for answers after an experimental missile reportedly managed to separate from a B-52 strategic bomber and explode during a recent captive-carry flight test. US military sources informed Aviation Week that a scramjet-powered missile, still in development under the joint USAF-DARPA Hypersonic Air-breathing Weapon Concept (HAWC) program, exploded after becoming separated from a B-52 aircraft of the 419th Flight Test Squadron at Edwards Air Force Base, California. Additional details surrounding the hypersonic missile’s deployment remain under wraps. “Details of those flight demonstrations are classified,” said a […]
