While the shock caused by the COVID-19 health crisis has generated ripples across global economies, leaving failing industries, job losses and poverty in its wake, the pandemic hasn’t been so bad for everyone. Scientists have issued new warnings over the Thwaites Glacier in the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica, saying its collapse could result in substantial sea-level rises. In interviews with the Financial Times, several scientists noted that the collapse of the ice mass – which has been referred to as the “doomsday glacier” – could increase sea levels by around 65 centimeters by itself. However, its fall could lead to a runaway collapse of other ice in West Antarctica, causing sea levels to increase by up to 6 feet. The Thwaites Glacier’s melting is already responsible for about 4% of global sea-level rises, […]
Dozens of US troops at two bases on the Japanese island of Okinawa have been confirmed infected with the coronavirus. Local authorities demand transparency from the Pentagon, and an adequate response to the massive outbreak. Rigorous contact tracing and isolation of those infected had so far allowed the island prefecture to keep the number of confirmed cases at about 150, with only 7 fatalities. Overall, as of July 10, Japan reported about 20,700 cases and nearly 1,000 deaths. Therefore, Okinawa Governor Tamaki Denny says local authorities were “shocked by what we were told” by the Pentagon about the scale of the latest […]

In cryptocurrency markets, newfangled “decentralized exchanges” like Kyber are piddling compared with more-established and centralized venues like Binance. But in the eyes of traders, it’s the upstarts who are winning lately – at least based on the year-to-date performance of digital tokens affiliated with the various exchanges. Take Kyber Network Crystal (KNC), which is used to pay trading fees on the decentralized exchange Kyber. The token’s price has surged eight-fold in 2020. That compares with a 21% gain for Binance Coin (BNB), which customers of the exchange can use to pay trading fees, at a discounted rate. You’re reading First Mover, CoinDesk’s daily […]

Dr. Deborah Birx, the coordinator of President Donald Trump’s coronavirus task force, told the nation’s governors in a call Monday that it was vital that they ramp up testing to find asymptomatic individuals to prevent further community spread. Her remarks stood in stark contrast to those by the president at his rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma over the weekend—and the days since—in which he said he had asked his team to slow-walk testing initiatives so as not to inflate the country’s official case count. “Hopefully I have left you with the impression that increased testing is good,” Birx said on the call, […]
