More than 100,000 new Covid cases have been reported across Europe in one 24-hour period for the first time, as the continent struggles with the second wave of the virus and many nations record their highest-ever infection rates. The second wave of the novel coronavirus appears to be hitting Europe harder than the first, at least when it comes to the spread of the virus. Statistics presented by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control on Friday suggest that the infection rates throughout the continent have been higher than at the spring peak in late March and April, since at […]

As Western European countries, such as the UK and France, face a likely second wave of Covid-19, Eastern Europe – less severely hit in spring – may be following in tow. Russia and Ukraine are now seeing an uptick in infections. In Ukraine, doctors over the last 24 hours confirmed 3,833 new cases of Covid-19, a record figure since the beginning of the pandemic. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, his country is being hit by a second wave. Europe’s poorest state is especially vulnerable given the dire state of its health service. “Cases are spiking all around the world now, […]
A new national effort asks K-12 schools to voluntarily — and anonymously — report their confirmed and suspected coronavirus cases, along with the safety strategies they’re using. Opening schools safely in person is seen as key to restarting the economy and recovering the learning loss that has fallen most heavily on marginalized groups of students. There are also many fears associated with reopening — of severe illness among vulnerable staff and family members, and of stoking broader outbreaks, as seems to have happened where colleges have reopened in person. The COVID-19 School Response Dashboard, which NPR is reporting on exclusively, was […]

India has reported 78,761 new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours, marking the biggest-ever daily increase for a nation. The number of coronavirus infections in the world passed the 25 million mark on Sunday. Before Sunday’s update, which pushed the total number of infections in India to more than 2.5 million, the US held the record with 77,638 daily infections reported on July 17. The surge in India comes shortly after the government eased lockdown restrictions, to alleviate pressure on the economy. The disease is continuing to spread globally and even countries that have fared better so far like New Zealand and […]

Within weeks, the reopening of schools across the United States has already become a complete catastrophe. Outside of the mobilization of educators, parents and the broader working class to halt this homicidal policy, there will be rapid acceleration of the spread of the deadly COVID-19 disease throughout every region of the country. Because no government agency at the local, state or federal level is […]

Her temperature reached 39 Celsius,” she wrote on social media. Tymoshenko briefly served as prime minister in 2005 and later held the same office from 2007-2010, as well as running for president three times. She currently leads the opposition Fatherland (Batkivshchyna) party in Ukraine’s parliament. […]
With the summer holiday season in full swing, some tourists seem to have taken coronavirus with them to the coast. That’s prompted Crimea to search for more doctors as infections in crowded resorts are overloading local hospitals. With Russia’s international borders partially closed, the Black Sea peninsula is experiencing a mass influx of travelers looking to have a domestic warm-weather beach holiday. In July, 1.43 million tourists visited Crimea, and hotels and boarding houses reported that they were 80 percent occupied. According to official data, Crimea recorded 32 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, and 27 on Friday. On July 14, the […]
Brazil Reports Almost 70,000 New Covid Infections in Record Day by Mario Sergio Lima/Bloomberg Brazil registered a record number of coronavirus cases and deaths after days of reported issues with the transfer of the data from local governments into the national system. The Latin American country added 69,074 cases on Wednesday, pushing the total number of infections to over 2.55 million, according to the Health Ministry. Deaths rose by 1,595 to 90,134. In both counts, Brazil trails only the U.S. globally. Brazil, a nation of 210 million with some states the size of France, has reported some 7,000 coronavirus deaths a […]
Health Editor’s Note: Immunity against SARS-CoV-2 may not be long lasting in people who have a mild illness. The majority of those who have coronavirus fall into that category. We can get the common cold, which is a coronavirus, over and over again, because we do not develop a lasting immunity. Generally, if we contract (or are vaccinated for) the viruses of measles, mumps, rubella, chicken pox, we will develop a life-long immunity to those viruses. What is revealed in this study is that the immunity levels, measured in the blood, decrease at a fairly rapid rate after the initial infection. […]
The World Health Organization has registered a record increase in coronavirus cases worldwide. The confirmed-cases number has jumped by nearly a quarter million over the past 24 hours. The record increase of 230,370 was registered by the global health watchdog on Sunday, with the largest number of new cases coming from the US, Brazil, India, and South Africa. It is the highest daily spike since the outbreak of the pandemic last year. The first three countries, which contributed most to the spike, amount to nearly half of all the cases registered worldwide. The US remains by far the worst-hit nation, with […]

As COVID-19 advanced across the globe, most countries reacted by instituting shelter-in-place and lock-down strategies. As those curbs now begin to ease, the world is on edge at the prospect of a resurgent wave of infections. Models and speculation are rife, but facts remain scarce. Which is why the events in Wisconsin on April 7, and their eventual impact, are so important. On that day, citizens who wished to exercise their right to vote in the state’s political primary were forced to go in person to the polls. Strong opposition and a series of court rulings had foreclosed earlier hopes for […]
www.youtube Health Editor’s Note: In this article you will find a map with designation of how “open” a state is. There is a description of level of openness and a graph to show levels of cases. Someone went to a lot of work on this. I suspect that we will be sorry as we experience an increase in cases, as we did after Easter and Mother’s Day weekends when people ignored “stay in place” suggestions. In Michigan we definitely saw an increase in numbers of COVID-19 cases in rural areas after the big protest in Lansing. Yep, meeting up in the […]
by Jim W. Dean, VT Editor, …with PressTV, Tehran [ Editor’s Note: This Covid prison story came as no surprise. In both the pandemic preparation and the scramble for protection equipment and testing, the prisons and jails were at the end of the competition line. The rationale for the would be that front line health care workers were more valuable due to the pending risk of the hospitals being over flooded, which some were, and their staff going down with Covid, adding to the medical and ensuing political risk of a botched response. The US was hijacking en route protection equipment […]
US 19:24 GMT 11.05.2020Get short URL An expert argues that a rush for US states to reopen their economies amid the COVID-19 novel coronavirus pandemic will more than likely backfire if there is a significant uptick, or “second wave,” of infections. Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, issued an economic warning to governors looking to turn their states’ economies around during his Friday appearance on CNBC’s “Trading Nation.” “If we get a second wave, it will be a depression,” he said, referring to a second surge of COVID-19 cases, CNBC reported. “We may not shut down again, but certainly it […]
A total of 11,012 new cases of Covid-19 were reported in Russia on Sunday afternoon. Officials in Moscow say the surge in the numbers there is due to increased testing. The country has now seen the daily number of newly-recorded coronavirus infections exceed 10,000 for eight consecutive days. Overall, there are 209,688 patients who have tested positive for the deadly disease. About half of the new cases reported on Sunday were registered in Moscow, which remains the country’s worst infection hotspot, followed by the region surrounding the capital. Some 88 people have died across the country over the past 24 hours, […]
