Ask your liberal friends about Danny Glover. They will say – superstar actor featured in the Lethal Weapon film series. Civil rights activist. Democracy Now regular. Supporter of Bernie Sanders for President and for single payer national health insurance. But ask older Americans who watch a lot of cable television about Danny Glover, and they will tell you about Danny Glover – paid actor for big pharma and the insurance industry. As it turns out, Glover is the civil rights face of corporate liberalism. I didn’t believe it when I first heard about it this week. But then, reality was just […]
US President Donald Trump said the FBI targeted him for a “coup” after newly released documents showed that federal agents bought liability insurance over fears their handling of the Trump-Russia probe could lead to legal trouble. The new documents were disclosed in a federal court filing on Thursday by Sidney Powell, defense attorney for former Trump adviser Michael Flynn. Seizing on the new release, the president ran a victory lap at a campaign rally in Florida, telling the crowd the FBI had been “caught” attempting a “coup.” “Today a trove of text messages was released from FBI agents involved in the […]
It could become the most costly damage in US history, surpassing those Los Angeles suffered in the 1992 riots after police officers were acquitted in the beating of black man Rodney King. Damage caused by violent protests only from 26 May to 8 June could cost US insurance companies from $1 billion to $2 billion, according to Property Claim Services (PCS), the insurance industry’s primary source for reporting on insured losses from catastrophes. PCS has collected US insurance claims history related to civil unrest since 1950 to learn that this year’s riots could be the most expensive, going far higher than the […]

Health Insurance And The COVID-19 shock By Josh Bivens and Ben Zipperer, EPI. The COVID-19 crisis is one such shock, causing a near-total shutdown of huge swaths of the U.S. economy in March and April. While there was a large bounce back in job growth in May and June and, to a lesser extent, in July, the overall level of employment remains historically depressed relative […]
Crypto exchange Shakepay, which describes itself as “Canada’s fastest-growing bitcoin platform,” conducted a “proof-of-reserves” audit and acquired an insurance policy to reinforce its security, perhaps learning a lesson from fellow Canadian platforms QuadrigaCX, Einstein and Coinsquare, which all lost customer funds or have otherwise been involved in scandals over the past 20 months. The Montreal-based crypto exchange hired blockchain forensics firm CipherBlade to conduct a full audit of its reserves and security policies. To safeguard its customers’ funds, the exchange also tapped a third-party custodian and secured a specific insurance policy for its cold wallets through Aon, underwritten by insurers with […]
Data provider Chainlink will provide decentralized weather data for insurance startup Arbol, according to a blog shared with CoinDesk. Arbol provides crop insurance for small to medium-sized farmers or enterprises. Smart contracts pay claims to subscribers when a preset value – such as the average monthly temperature or rainfall – turns out different than the contract specifies, the firm said. Called parametric insurance, the financial derivative is often used in agriculture to hedge against future events, such as a bad harvest. Other firms, notably CME Group, also offer weather derivatives that require middlemen. Arbol insurance, on the other hand, self-executes using […]

In the midst of a capitalist crash and an out-of-control health crisis, two mega-industries that bear a heavy burden of responsibility for the health disaster are reporting soaring profits. “The nation’s leading health insurers are experiencing an embarrassment of profits,” reported the New York Times Aug. 6. “Anthem, Humana and United Health Group second quarter earnings are […]

In a new filing made at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York on Tuesday, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. argues Trump’s legal team is mistaken in claiming that their investigation into the president’s financial records is limited to […]

Maxwell has been indicted for allegedly scheming with the late Jeffrey Epstein, her former boyfriend and close associate, to groom young women and girls for sexual abuse. The British socialite has yet to enter a plea deal and is expected to be brought to a New York court later this week. Ghislaine Maxwell has secretly compiled copies of Jeffrey Epstein’s sex tapes as insurance that could keep her out of jail, The Daily Mail reports, citing Maxwell’s former friend. “The secret stash of sex tapes I believe Ghislaine has squirreled away could end up being her get-out-of-jail card if the authorities […]
Crises often highlight both the best and the worst of humanity. Coronavirus is no exception. It has brought out the best in America’s health-care workforce. Public support for nurses, doctors, and other frontline workers is overwhelming. Doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, food service workers, janitors, and administrators, among countless others have risen to the challenges of high intensity work in the setting of a novel virus, without preventative strategies or treatment options, limited testing, little PPE, and not enough ventilators. Doctors are going to work in some cases not knowing whether we will be paid, and in all cases not knowing whether […]

Bitcoin warehouse Bakkt has onboarded more than 70 clients for its custody services and given them the option to tap more than $600 million in insurance coverage overall, the company announced Monday. In a blog post, the company said it had partnered with insurance broker Marsh to provide up to $500 million-worth of cover. Bakkt customers would have to purchase this insurance themselves, and it would be in addition to, rather than instead of, the custodian’s existing $125 million insurance coverage. Marsh has been involved in the crypto space since at least 2018, and already facilitates or provides insurance for Crypto.com […]
