Above Photo: Amazon workers and labor supporters rallied in front the LDJ5 Staten Island warehouse ahead of a union vote, April 24, 2022. Ben Fractenberg / The City. Out of nearly 1,000 ballots cast at the LDJ5 warehouse, just 380 supported joining the Amazon Labor Union. ALU made history last month with a scrappy campaign that defeated the e-commerce giant at a neighboring warehouse. Amazon workers at a Staten Island distribution center who sought to join a union fell short of the needed votes — failing to repeat the history-making win of colleagues at a facility across the street, in a setback for […]
Above Photo: Here comes round two: Amazon’s battalion of unscrupulous union-busters has descended on the Staten Island sorting facility where workers will begin voting April 25 on whether to unionize. “It’s a war in there,” said Amazon Labor Union Treasurer Madeline Wesley. (Amazon Labor Union). ‘They’re Playing Really Dirty’. The company has billed itself as the everything store. Now Amazon is the throw-everything-at-them union-buster—trying every trick in the playbook to throttle worker organizing at its Staten Island warehouses in New York City. Before the vote count most reporters had dismissed the independent union’s chances, treating the organizing as a curiosity at best. “I think we have been overlooked,” said ALU Treasurer Madeline Wesley Thursday […]

Frustrated featherweight Hakeem Dawodu has admitted he was trying to goad opponent Zubaira Tukhugov into trading with him during an angry outburst at UFC 253, accusing his Russian rival of being a “running man” during their fight. Canadian Dawodu lost his cool in the final minute of the third round of his encounter with Tukhugov, snarling at his foe as his plea to “f*cking fight” echoed around the largely empty arena on Fight Island in Abu Dhabi. His repetition of his foul-mouthed provocation failed to impress referee Kevin Sataki, who namechecked Dawodu as he reminded both fighters: “Come on, gentlemen. Be respectful. […]

The University of Rhode Island is taking down murals that were painted at its student Memorial Union more than 60 years ago because they show too many white people and lack “sensitivity to today’s complex and painful problems.” “These murals were a snapshot in time, but the images no longer represent who we are today and where we are going in the future,” university vice president for student affairs Kathy Collins said Thursday. She added that the school had received student complaints about the murals because “the persons painted and depicted on the wall are predominantly white.” A mural painted nearly […]
What happens when you take 10 “sexy singles,” give them all COVID-19 tests, and make them share one tiny Las Vegas hotel room after months of isolation? Extreme horniness and a flagrant disregard for safety procedures ensue. So begins the second season of CBS’s Love Island, the US adaptation of the British reality dating show of the same name. When Love Island USA premiered last summer, it failed to pack the steamy, dramatic punch of its original iteration from across the pond. Geologists from around the world began expressing concerns about the state of the planet’s magnetic field last year amid the rapid move of the magnetic north pole out of the Canadian Arctic toward Russia. Earth scientists from the University of Liverpool’s Geomagnetism Laboratory have discovered that the South Atlantic Anomaly – the area between South America and southern Africa where the magnetic field is significantly weaker than anywhere else on the planet, has likely been that way for millions of years, and therefore probably isn’t a sign of a coming reversal of the planet’s magnetic poles. He noted that not every encounter between Chinese and Taiwanese aircraft is reported in the media. “If international society does not give China a sufficiently clear […]
