The government is ignoring people’s distress and the worsening crisis – and it has no solutions. Recently released estimates of India’s economic output show that people are not spending enough. The only reason this can be is because they do not have sufficient income, and their buying power is limited. On the other hand, prices of all essential commodities are increasing at a disturbingly high rate. This will further restrict spending. Industrial production has grown at snail’s pace, and with people not having enough to spend, demand will continue to be low and industrial output too will languish. Bank credit for large industries […]

A Just Transition Requires Green Jobs And Good Access To Domestic Travel Options In their new report titled, “The right track for Green Jobs” Possible, Autonomy UK and Safe Landing present scenarios for showing that cuts to aviation can more than compensate for job losses to the aviation sector. No more excuses, green jobs are possible especially when people are willing to fly less. While we at Stay Grounded and those in our network have proposed numerous strategies for reducing climate impacts from aviation, we also realize the need to emphasize a just transition towards a grounded future that helps counter […]
Above Photo: Getty Images. The Industry Is Wildly Fudging The Numbers To Make Itself Look Like A Major Job Creator. We Shouldn’t Be Fooled. For years now, any discussion about climate action or the need to move off fossil fuels has run headlong into a familiar quandary: The industries fueling the climate crisis create good jobs, often in areas of the country where finding work that can support a family is incredibly difficult. This leaves activists gesturing towards well-intentioned goals like a “just transition,” a promise that likely rings hollow for workers and many labor unions because it’s hard to see where this has actually happened — even […]

The mismanaged integration of the United States into the global economy has devastated U.S. manufacturing workers and their communities. Globalization of our economy, driven by unfair trade, failed trade and investment deals, and, most importantly, currency manipulation and systematic overvaluation of the U.S. dollar over the past two decades has resulted in growing trade deficits—the U.S. importing more than we export—that have eliminated more than five million U.S. manufacturing jobs and nearly 70,000 factories. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem capitalized on news that police officers are leaving Seattle at record rates amid budget calls and ongoing protests by offering them work in her state. In her message to Seattle police officers, the Republican governor promised South Dakota would not “demonize” them. “In South Dakota we stand WITH you,” she tweeted on Saturday. The governor even added a link to a website listing law enforcement job openings. Noem’s tweet follows Friday news that Seattle police officers are leaving their department at an “unprecedented” rate. The department currently has around 1200 officers employed, the lowest number in […]
An Afghan refugee-turned-famous Swedish expert on education and integration, Hamid Zafar, has had his perfect public image ruined after a local newspaper discovered hateful comments he had been posting online under a pseudonym. Zafar arrived in Sweden as a refugee child and rose to prominence as a symbol of successful integration. Brought up in what is being described as a “socially vulnerable” district of Gothenburg, the man took charge of a troubled local school and became known throughout Sweden simply as ‘Rector Hamid’. His career has been on the rise ever since: between working at the Swedish Schools Inspectorate and giving […]
Although not a bulwark of the Norwegian economy, the tourism industry accounts for over 165,000 jobs in a nation of 5.4 million and corresponds to 1.8 percent of its GDP. According to new analysis by the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO), total tourist consumption between January and August of 2020 fell by a staggering NOK 41 billion ($4.4 billion) compared with the same period last year, the news outlet Kampanje reported. The decline in tourist consumption was most significant among foreign tourists, with a 68% decline in the period – from NOK 46 billion (nearly $5 billion) to NOK 14 billion […]
Watching well heeled, well paid and pompous Tories on the news all morning trying to convince us there is no money left in the cookie jar to support millions of workers facing the sack due to increased Covid19 restrictions made me think about nuclear weapons and the narrow contrived parameters of political discourse in the UK. Not one journalist had the cojones to ask how the UK can afford Trident but not to support low paid hospitality workers? Or how these politicians expect us to believe ‘we are all in it together’ while they get a £3,300 wage increase to over […]
As for so many of us, the past several months formed a season of loss for Wynton Marsalis. His father, pianist Ellis Marsalis—who Wynton described on his blog as “a humble man with a lyrical sound”—died on April 1, at 85, from complications of COVID-19. One of his clearest mentors, the writer and critic Stanley Crouch, died on Sept. 16, at 74. The celebrated trumpeter is, as are we all, caught in an extended period of estrangement—his last public performance with his orchestra was more than seven months ago. This new reality requires that Marsalis hustle harder and in new ways […]

After spending most of the first presidential debate shouting incoherently, Donald Trump finished it off with a crystal clear message. “I’m urging my supporters to go into the polls and watch very carefully,” he said, stoking fears of potentially violent election day interference. At home in Chicago, Kayleigh Glaza missed Trump’s comment at first. “There was so much yelling and other stuff happening,” she said. One of her friends mentioned it later in a debate night group chat. Glaza, a former writer for a food magazine who was furloughed during the pandemic, felt “scared” when she read the text. She plans […]
US airlines are preparing to lay off tens of thousands of employees unless they get additional federal aid. The industry has been struggling to stay afloat amid an unprecedented collapse in air travel due to the Covid pandemic. American Airlines CEO Doug Parker said late Wednesday that the carrier has no choice but to cut 19,000 jobs after attempts to get more federal money failed. The CEO of United Airlines, Scott Kirby, said the decision to cut 13,000 jobs marked “a very sad day for all of us here at United.” Earlier in the day, Parker told CNN he still hoped that the job cuts might […]

At the time, she felt like she was “at the top of her world.” But as the economic effects of the pandemic hit the marketing industry among others, she lost her job in May. Yates is among […]

Arguing primarily from a global perspective, the economists have concluded the US economy as of the 3rd quarter 2020 is not merely now experiencing a ‘great recession’ but now qualifies as another Great Depression. In an effort to prop up the floundering economy amid the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic, the UK government announced a job retention scheme in March, with companies paid up to 80 percent of the wage bill for furloughed employees. British employers are beginning to acknowledge the unavoidability of difficult decisions such as axing staff to navigate an unforgiving labour market, as the UK government hastens to restart the country’s COVID-19 pandemic-battered economy. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order preventing federal agencies from hiring foreign workers via H-1B visas. In addition, Trump fired two federal executives for outsourcing US jobs and “betraying” Americans. Trump’s order, signed on Monday, requires federal agencies to prioritize US citizens and Green Card holders before outsourcing labor to foreign workers – who can come to the US on H-1B visas. Use of these visas is common in the tech sector, and 180,000 of them were issued last year, according to State Department statistics. Government agencies will now be required to conduct an internal audit to make sure […]

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The resurgence of COVID-19 cases is hanging over the US economy like a thick fog of uncertainty, with recovery likely suppressed and job market recovery hurt by the second wave of the pandemic, Federal Reserve Governor Lael Brainard said on Tuesday. “A thick fog of uncertainty still surrounds us, and downside risks predominate. The recovery is likely to face headwinds even if the downside risks do not materialize, and a second wave would magnify that challenge,” Brainard said in a web-streamed speech entitled Navigating Monetary Policy through the Fog of COVID. “It is unclear whether the rapid pace […]

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order putting new restrictions on foreign work visas until the end of 2020, a move the administration said is needed as the economy suffers in the wake of Covid-19 lockdowns. Signed on Monday evening, the order freezes several types of work visas – including the H1B for highly skilled workers – which the White House says will keep some 500,000 American jobs from going to foreign employees, part of what it deemed an “America-first recovery.” “American workers compete against foreign nationals for jobs in every sector of our economy, including against millions of aliens […]
