A veteran editor at Folha de S.Paulo, Brazil’s biggest newspaper, criticizes colleagues for failing to adequately report and prepare the public for an imminent coup attempt by Bolsonaro and the Armed Forces. “It can no longer be treated as a risk, but rather as a certainty of harm to institutions and the country.” – José Henrique Mariante In a chilling column in Folha de S.Paulo newspaper, quietly published at 11:15pm on 7th May 2022, José Henrique Mariante, a veteran journalist, editor and currently Folha ombudsman, urged fellow journalists, and his own newspaper, to acknowledge the dark moment Brazil faces. Above Photo: Committee to Protect Journalists executive director Joel Simon (Screen shot from CPJ promo video on YouTube). A record number of journalists are imprisoned throughout the world, according to the annual prison index released by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ). But that number excludes WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. CPJ, which is based in New York, opposes the United States Justice Department’s prosecution against Assange. However, for the third year, the press freedom organization declined to classify him as a jailed journalist. In the organization’s press release on the 2021 index, it states, “No journalists were jailed in North America at the […]
In the summer of 2020 we launched a collaborative writing program to connect incarcerated writers with outside journalists and editors. Our goal was to help them publish their writing in mainstream media publications. We began only a few weeks after COVID-19 came into San Quentin State Prison, where Rahsaan lives. We knew that COVID-19 would be an incredible threat to people incarcerated, but were unprepared for the devastation and loss ahead. At San Quentin — which became home to the largest outbreak in the country — Rahsaan became infected with the virus and experienced the mental health toll of being locked in […]

Yahoo! News (9/26/21) published a bombshell report detailing the US Central Intelligence Agency’s “secret war plans against WikiLeaks,” including clandestine plots to kill or kidnap publisher Julian Assange while he took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Following WikiLeaks‘ publication of the Vault 7 files in 2017—the largest leak in CIA history, which exposed how US and UK intelligence agencies could hack into household devices—the US government designated WikiLeaks as a “non-state hostile intelligence service” (The Hill, 4/13/17), providing legal cover to target the organization as if it were an adversarial spy agency. Within this context, the Donald Trump administration reportedly requested “sketches” or “options” for how to kill Assange, according to […]
Here’s a question for you. You live in Los Angeles. You have a laptop that’s acting up; needs some work. Do you: A) Find a computer repair shop in your neighborhood via Google or whatever and take it there; B) Send it back to the manufacturer; C) Say to yourself, “Oh, I know, I think I’ll go to Wilmington, Delaware, and take it to a legally blind computer repairman, because like obviously, who wouldn’t do that?” Donald Trump and Rudy Giuliani, not yet indicted, and Steve Bannon, already indicted for allegedly scamming loyal Trumpies no less, want you to believe that […]

A raccoon “attacked multiple news crews” on the North Lawn of the White House on Monday morning, CBS journalist Paula Reid reported on Twitter. The Australian embassy in China obstructed law enforcement when it intervened on behalf of two journalists who later returned to Australia, Beijing said on Monday. The actions of the embassy went beyond the scope of regular consular services, a spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry said. He also called on Canberra to give an explanation. The correspondents for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Australian Financial Review (AFR) sheltered in the embassy in Beijing and the consulate in Shanghai while diplomats negotiated with Chinese officials to allow them to leave the country, according to Australia’s Foreign Ministry. The two reporters were […]
In the latest verbal spat between Beijing and Canberra, China has accused Australia of oppressing its reporters as well as slamming its “blatant irrational behavior.” A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Zhao Lijian, alleged that four Chinese journalists had been harassed in June this year, noting that the Australian authorities had searched their homes and seized items including laptops, cellphones and even a child’s toy tablet. Zhao, in a daily briefing, requested that Australia “immediately stop such blatant irrational behaviors, stop harassing and oppressing Chinese personnel in Australia under whatever pretext.” Beijing also claimed that, according to the Australian side, the journalists […]

A disturbing image purporting to show journalists photographing graffiti which reads, “Kill Press” in the besieged city of Portland has generated shockwaves online, as tensions between activists and the media continue to ramp up. Despite ongoing mainstream media efforts to downplay the widespread rioting across the US in recent months as “mostly peacefulprotests,” time and time again, Black Lives Matter and Antifa activists and agitators have turned on the press. The rapidly deteriorating relationship between the sprawling protest movements and local and national media was captured somewhat neatly by a photo purporting to show the words “Kill Press” scrawled on a […]
Facebook suddenly disabled the account of video journalist Ford Fischer as he was covering armed protest groups Saturday in Louisville, raising fears that Big Tech censors are classifying newsgathering as incitement to violence. “I am a journalist, verified on Facebook,” Fischer wrote Saturday evening on his Twitter account. “Today I spent the entire day covering various armed groups throughout Louisville. As I just finished a livestream, I tried to log in and it appears Facebook deleted my account.” Fischer, co-founder of News2Share, was unable to get an explanation in efforts to follow up with the social media behemoth until his account […]
Albanian journo challenges MKO ringleader to open debate, vows to keep exposing terrorists [ Editor’s Note: These two Albanian journalists writing about MKO, when it is under the full protection of the US and NATO, is a ballsey thing to do. They could be VT guys covering and saying what no one else will. We salute Olsi Jazexhi and Gjergji Thanasi. When Western countries are harboring ‘useful’ terrorist groups, they generally want them to be low profile. But the US is the exception, as Trump buddy Rudy Guiliani has been a big promoter of the group. US and Western media give […]
The Belarusian foreign ministry has withdrawn accreditation from journalists from certain foreign media, a decision which the country’s law enforcement agencies have justified on the basis of ‘countering extremism.’ Journalists from Western media organizations, such as Reuters and Associated Press, along with state media outlets AFP, BBC, Deutsche Welle and RFE/RL, have been stripped of their right to report, meaning that they could be arrested if caught performing their duties. The majority of these reporters are Belarusian citizens. In response, British state broadcaster BBC called the move a “stifling of independent journalism,” which it condemned “in the strongest possible terms.” READ […]

A judge has issued a temporary restraining order on federal agents deployed in Portland, ruling that they may not arrest, disperse or otherwise use force against reporters and legal observers covering ongoing protests there. US District Court Judge Michael Simon ruled on Thursday that federal police must stop “arresting, threatening to arrest, or using physical force” on journalists and legal observers not suspected of a crime, following an injunction request from the Portland Mercury newspaper and the ACLU. “Plaintiffs have been covering or observing the protests and they all have documented incidents of violence, threats, or intimidation by federal agents,” Simon said, […]
MOSCOW—When the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) arrested journalist Ivan Safronov on charges of “state treason” this week, many of his friends were quick to remember what happened to his father. The elder Safronov, who also was named Ivan, wrote for the newspaper Kommersant until one day in 2007 he plunged out of a window to his death. “We called our television show today ‘They Have Come to Get Us.’ We are outraged to see our friend and colleague Safronov being accused […]

Fresh off an astonishingly incendiary speech at Mount Rushmore on Friday night, President Trump picked up where he left off on Saturday and took aim at the media—bizarrely claiming that journalists who call out racism somehow “slander” the entire country and all U.S. military veterans. “To those in the media, who falsely and consistently label their opponents as racists, who condemn patriotic citizens…When you level these false charges, you not only slander me, you not only slander the American people, but you slander generations of heroes who gave their lives for America,” he told the crowd gathered for the White House’s […]

Stacks of bricks left seemingly unattended in riot hotspots across the US – as if begging to be snatched and thrown by unruly mobs – have protesters and journalists wondering whether the violent street clashes are orchestrated. It’s not every day one sees a stack of bricks just lying around unattended, especially when there’s no construction to be seen – but a rash of reports of pallets of bricks turning up as if by magic in over half a dozen cities over the weekend has investigators trying to get to the bottom of who’s seemingly giving would-be rioters the tools they […]

MINNEAPOLIS—A night after Minneapolis burned, protests on Saturday were mostly calm—until cops and the National Guard moved in with force against those breaking curfew. The protests in Minneapolis, where 46-year-old George Floyd died after a white cop knelt on his neck for several minutes, began peacefully on Saturday as hundreds of residents marched alongside police officers. But just after the 8:00 p.m. curfew passed and all major highways into the Twin Cities were shut down, police appeared in full gear. They began to fling tear gas, flashbangs, and rubber bullets at protesters and journalists alike—pushing crowds away from police precincts that […]
Chinese tech giant Huawei’s ‘woke’ PR stunt has ended up in a disaster after the host and all the announced participants of its panel on Covid-19 misinformation dropped out under a barrage of mockery and shaming. The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) was scheduled to host a webinar on Wednesday aimed at discussing whether Covid-19 disinformation disproportionately affects ethnic minorities in the US. But many online social justice warriors saw red over the fact that the Chinese telecommunication company Huawei would be the sponsor. Long before the Covid-19 pandemic originated in China, Huawei has been targeted for criticism by the […]

He also wants journalists to “investigate” – but refuses to open sought-after archives.
