Bitcoin’s Lightning Network has reached a significant milestone. An important capacity limit meant to protect users of the nascent protocol is being tweaked, toppling a barrier to entry for companies looking to adopt the novel payment system. LND, a leading Lightning Network implementation from startup Lightning Labs, has announced it has adopted support for wumbo channels. Going forward, users can deposit more money into Lightning Network channels than before, as well as send larger transactions. Read more: What Is Bitcoin’s Lightning Network? Thousands of California residents were under evacuation orders Wednesday as dozens of wildfires continued to tear through the state, sparked by lightning storms and an unrelenting heatwave. As of Wednesday afternoon, there were about 367 fires raging across California—23 of them considered major blazes—Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a press briefing. After more than 100,000 residents were ordered to flee their homes in one northern California city, Newsom has declared a state of emergency and called on the California National Guard to help with relief efforts. “This fire season has been very active,” Newsom said, calling Wednesday “another challenging day.” He […]

If you have ever seen tentacle-like spurts of red lightning during a thunderstorm, feel lucky since this is considered to be a very rare weather phenomenon. In 2011, Professor of Physics at the University of Alaska, Davis Sentman, proposed the name “sprite” for this type of lightning. Sprites are ultrafast bursts of electricity that occur in the upper regions of the atmosphere, between 60 and 80 kilometres up in the sky. Stephen Hummel, an expert for the […]
All eyes are on bitcoin‘s bullish price at the moment. Behind the scenes, however, developers are tinkering to build the infrastructure that many hope could make the Bitcoin system more accessible to more people. Last week, Bitcoin tech startup Blockstream released its latest major version of c-lightning, its implementation of the Lightning Network. The release is dubbed “Rat Poison Squared on Steroids,” facetiously referencing Warren Buffet’s comment that Bitcoin is “rat poison squared” and, in his opinion, investors will get burned if they put their money into it. Of course, c-lightning’s developers probably don’t believe Bitcoin is “rat poison,” seeing as […]
The infrastructure propping up Bitcoin might become easier for anyone to spin up and run. Lightning creator Tadge Dryja has been working on a new design for a lighter weight Bitcoin full node, about which he first wrote a paper in 2019. Last week, he and a team of coders released a first version of the Utreexo software as a part of MIT Digital Currency Initiative (DCI), putting the idea of lighter nodes into working code. Full Bitcoin nodes act like financial security systems, validating Bitcoin blockchain transactions and protecting users from being tricked into thinking they received money that they […]

One of the most popular Bitcoin wallets, Electrum, now supports Lightning Network payments. The latest swathe of major changes was released in version 4.0, one of its biggest upgrades since the Bitcoin wallet launched in 2011. (Note: Since the 4.0 release, some bug fixes have been added.) Lightning payments are seen as the future of Bitcoin because they’re cheaper and would allow many more users to make bitcoin cryptocurrency transactions at once. This makes Electrum the oldest wallet to have adopted Lightning payments so far. Lightning support in Electrum is a long time coming. Electrum founder Thomas Voegtlin first told CoinDesk […]
The social payments app Bottlepay (née Bottle Pay) aims to relaunch in the next few weeks, after shuttering due to regulations in December 2019. After restructuring the bitcoin wallet product to fit Europe’s anti-money laundering directive (AMLD5), the British startup is offering an exchange wallet with social features on Reddit, Twitter and Discord. Bottlepay co-founder Pete Cheyne said there are over 1,000 people on the waitlist for the closed beta relaunch in August. “Because we’re moving to an app-native product there’s a lot more we can do,” Cheyne said. “We’re also adding in the ability to have scheduled payments to buy […]
The official WikiLeaks Shop, an offshoot of the non-profit infamous for leaking government secrets, now accepts bitcoin Lightning payments. All proceeds from the online store, which sells WikiLeaks T-shirts and other swag, goes to fund WikiLeaks operations. The shop already accepts bitcoin and other popular cryptocurrencies for payments. Now, as of Tuesday, it also accepts bitcoin payments via Lightning, making the WikiLeaks Shop one of the earliest vendors to do so. The Lightning Network supports a newer, faster type of bitcoin transaction that could potentially help bitcoin scale to support many more users. But using Lightning is still somewhat experimental and […]

Savvy attackers might be able to “loot” bitcoin from others by way of the Lightning Network if users aren’t careful, a new cybersecurity report warns. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem computer scientists Jona Harris and Aviv Zohar have taken a closer look at a “systemic” Lightning Network attack that could lead to loss of funds. The attack, which they describe in their new paper, “Flood & Loot: A Systemic Attack on the Lightning Network,” preys on Bitcoin congestion. The problem with the Bitcoin blockchain is that it’s slow to settle payments and it only supports a few transactions per second. The […]

Record-Breaking Lightning Bolts Spark Excitement by Nora McGreevy/Smithsonianmag.com On October 31, 2018, a spidery web of lightning unfurled over Brazil, stretching 440 miles across the sky—a length roughly equivalent to the distance between Boston and Washington, D.C. The colossal flash set the record for longest-in-distance lightning strike recorded to date. The electrifying event is one of two record-setting strikes recently confirmed by a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) committee, according to a statement. Another bolt lit up over northern Argentina on March 4, 2019, for a whopping 16.73 seconds, setting a record for the longest recorded duration of a lightning strike. “These are mind-boggling, […]

Ethereum was created to carry out complex applications Bitcoin supposedly couldn’t handle. A new app brings the idea full circle. Pseudonymous developer Fiatjaf has created Etleneum, which he describes as a “centralized” version of Ethereum that runs on payments from Bitcoin’s Lightning Network. Hence the name, a portmanteau of “Ethereum” and “Lightning.” (If that’s too subtle, the Etleneum logo is a diamond shape like Ethereum’s with a lightning bolt running through it.) Like Ethereum, Etleneum has “contracts,” automated agreements over what rules need to be met before money can be dispensed. The contracts are public like Ethereum’s, and like the world’s […]
As coronavirus is changing everyone’s lives, making it harder to go outside or interact with friends and family, people are leaning more than ever on digital video platforms to live a “normal” life. That includes Bitcoiners who are fine-tuning the organization of hackathons in the virtual realm. Several times around the globe, German lightning research startup Fulmo has put on the event Lightning Hack Day, where developers gather to hack and share new exciting ideas to further the network or the lightning-related projects they’ve been working on. With coronavirus making it unwise (and even legally restricted) to travel and gather in […]

It’s the supposedly rapid test that President Trump claimed was “lightning-fast” and about to usher in “a whole new ballgame” in COVID-19 detection. But since then, the fine print has started to creep into the Trump administration’s rhetoric about Abbott Labs’ diagnostic coronavirus tests and where they can be useful. When asked by Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) about the possibility of rapid testing for meatpackers during a hearing on Tuesday, Assistant Health and Human Services Secretary Admiral Brett Giroir noted that, while Abbott’s test can deliver results in the promised 15 minutes, their low throughput rate, or number of tests they […]
