Last week, Brian Armstrong, the CEO of Coinbase, published a Medium post stating that the company would not engage in broad societal issues, would not take on activism, and would not be a forum for political debate and discourse. He said he published this memorandum in response to internal strife at the company. If Wired is to be believed or the original text of the memo is any indication, much of that strife has been related to Coinbase’s response, or lack of it, to the Black Lives Matter movement. Reading between the many lines of PR-appropriate language, the message that Armstrong […]
Since the formal introduction of Ethereum in 2014, the network has exploded with products that allow users to transact directly with one another, without relying on a third party. One of the most common use cases is that of a decentralized exchange (DEX), an idea that dates back to Vitalik Buterin’s unveiling of Ethereum in 2014. Examining the history of how DEXs have evolved can help elucidate where DEXs are headed and how they will compete with centralized exchanges. What’s in a DEX? DEXs come in a variety of forms, but share one common quality: non-custodial. DEXs use smart contracts to […]

The Chinese president made the comments at an event commemorating China’s victory over Japanese colonialism, where he outlined several red lines for the nation’s Communist Party, who has ruled for over 70 years. The government of Paris is setting up five new sites to conduct free screening for Covid-19 and help private labs deal with demand for their services. Last week, France surpassed the national record of 900,000 weekly tests. Starting Monday, three permanent centers are collecting samples as part of free Covid-19 testing in the French capital, the mayor’s office said. Additionally, two mobile labs will be serving various parts of the city in half-day shifts. The measure is meant to alleviate pressure on private labs, which have been overwhelmed with the demand for Covid-19 screening. Last week, people had to wait up […]

Take a gander at any of the public social media groups for enthusiasts of Orlando, Florida’s Walt Disney World and you’ll find a common refrain: the theme park, which re-opened on Friday amid a COVID-19 catastrophe, has super-short lines for all its top roller coasters right now. Disney World closed in mid-March, when COVID-19 cases began sweeping the country. Then on Friday, the same day Florida reported its largest single-day increase in the virus and the first day the U.S. reported more than 70,000 cases, Disney World re-opened its gates. The re-opening also comes one day after unionized Disney staff lobbied, […]

It has been five months since the novel coronavirus started infecting Americans. Since then, the U.S. has lost more than 119,000 people to the sickness it causes — COVID-19. So many have been touched by the deaths of family and friends. Here we remember just a few of those who continued working during the pandemic because their jobs called for it and who, ultimately, lost their lives. On the last dinner Yves-Emmanuel Segui had with his family, “we went to this African food and art center in Harlem,” his daughter Morit Segui recalls. “My dad insisted [on] this dinner, and I […]

Considering the cheesy and unsubtle melodrama peddled by White Lines, it’s amazing that it takes until midway through its fourth episode before someone explains its metaphorical title (hint: it doesn’t just refer to cocaine!). Nonetheless, one doesn’t need to wait that long for wholesale absurdity to rear its head in this latest series from Money Heist mastermind Álex Pina, as the craziness begins early and then continues unabated for most of this Netflix import’s 10 roller-coaster installments. The modus operandi of this immoderate crime saga (premiering May 15) is to pile on the corniness at every turn, and in that respect, […]
