The Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) filed a complaint with the Ethics Commission last July alleging that ALEC’s gift of valuable voter management software, developed by Republican operatives and linked to the Republican National Committee’s voter […]

From July through September, as the U.S. Senate race in South Carolina went from contested to competitive, Democrat Jamie Harrison dropped more money on ads than any Senate candidate of either party has ever spent, on everything, in a single quarter. Harrison’s campaign reported an astonishing $44 million in television, radio, and digital advertising spending in the third quarter of 2020, when it also posted a fundraising record, bringing in more than $57 million in contributions backing Harrison’s challenge to Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. The Democrat’s campaign also passed along more than $4 million to the state Democratic Party. They’ve invested […]
Maine Senator Susan Collins says she will vote ‘no’ to confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, since it’s too close to the election, while refusing to say anything critical about how Barrett’s originalist judicial philosophy might imperil a woman’s right to choose. Collins is a Republican who supports abortion rights, a brand that has carried her to victory four times, but with Barrett’s confirmation all but certain, Collins’ longtime balancing act may have reached its tipping point. The GOP is getting closer to reaching its goal, the overturning of Roe v Wade, the now almost 50-year-old ruling that made […]
Maine’s biggest COVID-19 outbreak is linked to a wedding officiated by the pastor of a distancing-defying church who says masks are part of a “socialistic platform.” Now more than 144 COVID-19 patients have been linked to the event, and three people are dead. Todd Bell is pastor of the Calvary Baptist Church in Sanford, Maine. Famous for flying between ministries in multiple states on his private plane (God “burdened” his heart to do airplane ministry, he says), Bell flew in to officiate a rural Maine wedding on August 7. That wedding is the nexus of 144 COVID-19 cases, including three that […]

Robbie Feinberg/Maine Public Updated at 4:06 p.m. ET Sixth-grader Charlie Pierce says the hardest part of going back to school wasn’t the masks or the temperature checks. It was not being able to hug the friends she hadn’t seen in months. “My friends kind of really wanted to hug me,” Charlie says. “We had talked […]
The Maine state government is in the doghouse with residents after an order mandating that restaurant staff wear face shields upside down, attached at the collar – what netizens dubbed “cones of shame” more befitting a family pet. The latest “Covid-19 prevention checklist” issued by Democratic Governor Janet Mills lays out a series of rules one might expect amid the pandemic – such as good hygiene and social distancing. But one guideline for restaurants has raised eyebrows, demanding that servers don collared face shields reminiscent of those fixed to dogs after a medical procedure. “Front-of-house staff may wear a face […]
For weeks I have attempted to enlist friends to come to the beach with me. Many have declined this invitation, not in the name of social distancing but for fear of another deadly threat lurking in the water: sharks. Visions of pointed grey fins cutting through waves have long been the stuff of summer nightmares, thanks to that forever-terrifying 1975 blockbuster, Jaws. This year in particular, though, the panic has peaked. Reports of sightings in the Northeast are on the rise, maybe because frightened beach-goers are paying more attention to the water after a 63-year-old New Yorker named Julie Dimperio Holowach […]

Facebook user Karen Ramunno has shared a video of a mother duck guiding her ducklings across a five-lane road. The drivers slowly stopped to let a long line of ducks cross the road, creating a traffic jam in both directions. “Proof that there are more good people in this world than bad! Not one person in the 2 lines of traffic were beeping or impatient with these guys! Even the last 2 stragglers!”, Karen Ramunno said […]
BATH, Maine — More than 4,000 workers went on strike against one of the U.S. Navy’s largest shipbuilders Monday after rejecting a three-year contract. It was the first strike by production workers at Bath Iron Works in 20 years. Pickets formed at midnight when the old contract expired in a dispute that focused on subcontracting, work rules. and seniority over wages and benefits. Bath Iron Works already had fallen six months behind on ship construction, partly due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the strike threatened to further delay production of destroyers for the Navy, the company said. The three-year contract proposal […]

The U.S. Navy released a statement on Wednesday saying that the Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741) officially returned to strategic service. Maine’s keel was laid July 3, 1990, she was christened July 16, 1994, and was commissioned in Groton, Connecticut July 25, 1995. The USS Ohio completed three years of engineered refueling overhaul, estimated to extend the life of the ship by 20 years, the Navy announced. “These ships were not originally design to last much beyond 25 years,” said Machinist’s Mate (Auxiliary) 1st Class Cole Elliott, from Liberty Hill, Texas. “I’m proud to be a part of the […]
