Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign media director Zerlina Maxwell was ridiculed online for seemingly mixing metaphors, and trying to present conservative Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett’s face mask as a “dystopian” symbol. Maxwell, now an MSNBC contributor, tweeted a picture on Tuesday of Amy Coney Barrett wearing a medical mask at her Senate confirmation hearing on Monday. The commentator also added two screen grabs from the TV show ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, set in an oppressive Christian fundamentalist version of the US. The images featured two titular handmaids wearing leather-looking masks, intended by the story’s oppressors to prevent the female characters from […]
As President Donald Trump received treatment for the coronavirus at Walter Reed Medical Center last week, he and his aides worked on the stagecraft for his big return home. It needed to be showy and it would require television networks to have their cameras pointed at the White House during the beginning of their primetime shows. Disembarking from Marine One, Trump walked across the lawn, climbed two flights of stairs to the balcony of the residence, looked directly at the cameras and removed his mask. It was as overly dramatic as it was medically dangerous. For the White House the goal […]

Crowds of angry Orthodox Jews filled the streets of a Brooklyn neighborhood after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced strict Covid-19 restrictions that would limit occupancy in synagogues. Protesters in Borough Park, a largely Orthodox area of Brooklyn, burned a pile of discarded masks in the middle of the road. A video posted to social media shows New York City firefighters arriving at the scene to put out the blaze. The protest reportedly continued into the early hours of Wednesday, with men in traditional Orthodox costume marching through the area. Elsewhere in the city, police attempted to corral Orthodox Jews who […]

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace confronted Trump campaign adviser Steve Cortes on Sunday over the Trump camp’s refusal to wear masks during recent events including the presidential debate, prompting Cortes to loudly complain that Wallace was “starting to harangue” him. During an interview on Fox News Sunday, Cortes first likened President Donald Trump’s hospitalization for COVID-19 to a trip on baseball’s injured list, insisting that the president’s “going to be back in again throwing 95-mile-an-hour fastballs.” Wallace, unimpressed with the Trump flack’s analogy, quickly brought up Trumpworld’s irresponsibility when it comes to social distancing and mask-wearing. “I want to go back […]

Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told a Senate committee Wednesday that he believes face masks are “the most important, powerful public health tool we have” to fight COVID-19—and even better than a potential vaccine. “This face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against COVID than when I take a COVID vaccine because the immunogenicity may be 70 percent and if I don’t get an immune response the vaccine’s not going to protect me,” Redfield said. He strongly recommended all Americans wear face masks, especially young people who continue to spike the curve of infections. […]
At this point, I have so many masks, I don’t know where to put them. I’m considering repurposing a tie rack and making it a mask rack, since who knows when I’ll wear a tie again? It’s not that I didn’t know I had a small face, but the process of buying a face mask has been an eye-opening experience. I’ve tried all the shapes of masks out there. I’ve tried masks with ties, masks with a nose wire, pleated masks, contoured masks, mask clips. You name it, I’ve tried it. But what I’ve come to realize is that any old face masks just will not work on my smaller, narrower face. They bulge out at the sides or leave a huge gap under my chin, basically negating the purpose of a face mask. So, I did […]
A recent study by researchers in Brazil found that people with antisocial traits like low levels of empathy and higher levels of callousness, deceitfulness and risk-taking are less likely to comply with COVID-19 prevention measures, such as mask-wearing and social distancing. The study, conducted by researchers at the State University of Londrina, polled 1,578 Brazilian adults between the ages of 18 and 73. The study participants answered questionnaires about their compliance with COVID-19 containment measures as well as personality traits such as empathy and willingness to take risks. “Our findings indicated that antisocial traits, especially lower levels of empathy and higher […]

The government of the United Kingdom has been facing pressure to make wearing face masks mandatory in public places across England, although the Conservative party is staunchly opposed to the idea, denouncing the health move as going “way too far”. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson dropped his opposition to wearing face masks for schools across England, changing the guidance shortly before students are set to return to school. While earlier his guidance did not recommend wearing face masks, now it allows schools to require face coverings if they believe it is necessary. The new guidance came after a 21 August World Health […]
Lots of our favorite brands are creating face masks these days. From Purple to Everlane, finding a face mask from a brand you already love is pretty dang easy. Instead of “waiting for a miracle” like Donald Trump, Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden has vowed to bring Covid-19 under control – starting with a national mandate to wear masks as a “patriotic duty.” Biden gave his official acceptance speech on the last night of the Democratic National Convention on Thursday, at one point taking shots at US President Donald Trump’s coronavirus response. But moments after warning that “no miracle is coming,” Biden said his administration would provide just that, promising to roll out a “national strategy” to bring the pandemic under control on “day one.” “We’ll develop and deploy rapid […]

Conservative pundit Bill Mitchell has been kicked off Twitter, saying his opposition to face masks first earned him a suspension, which became permanent after he unwittingly violated the rules by tweeting from a second account. Mitchell announced his ban in a post on Parler on Friday, laying his Twitter handle to rest after accumulating more than 600,000 followers. Earning regular retweets from President Donald Trump, the account was a source of controversy, at times backing ‘QAnon’ conspiracy theories and voicing skepticism toward Covid-19, among other things. “Twitter just suspended me for opposing masks. Who knows if I’ll ever be back,” Mitchell […]
The co-founder of Trump fansite The Federalist took to Twitter Wednesday to share a lengthy screed against wearing face masks to slow the spread of the coronavirus, ostensibly from a doctor. As the U.S. nears 5 million confirmed coronavirus infections and tops 157,000 deaths, Sean Davis retweeted claims that have already been repeatedly debunked. The Federalist enjoys the ear of a number of conservative politicians who have written for the outlet and praised its coronavirus coverage publicly despite its repeated promotion of misinformation. In June, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) said, “The Federalist is an essential, transparent news media outlet that publishes […]
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner is ratcheting up enforcement of a state Covid-19 mask mandate, ordering police to cite residents who refuse to wear a face covering after being warned and penalize them with a $250 fine. “For months, we have been focusing on education and not citations, but now I am instructing the Houston Police Department to issue the necessary warnings and citations to anyone not wearing a mask in public if they do not meet the criteria for an exemption,” the mayor said Monday at a press briefing. The citation comes with a $250 fine. Lives are at stake, so […]
Families sitting down to watch the evening news might soon have to wear face masks, if the advice of the White House coronavirus adviser Dr. Deborah Birx is turned into a rule, as America’s disjointed war on Covid-19 continues. As a frequent product and apparel reviewer, I test out a fair amount of gear in any given year. During the steaming catastrophe that is the year 2020, much of that gear has been non-medical face masks. I’ve now tried out close to a dozen different reusable cloth face masks, and in my non-medical opinion, most of them suck. Top US immunologist Dr Anthony Fauci is now saying citizens are not “complete” in protecting themselves from the Covid-19 pandemic unless they go beyond wearing a mask and add in eye protection like goggles, too. In an interview with Dr Jennifer Ashton, ABC News’ chief medical correspondent, Fauci was asked if we might reach a point where masks are not only mandated, but eye protection as well. “It might,” he replied, going on to explain that the only way to have “perfect protection” from the virus is by protecting the eyes, as well as the mouth and nose. “If you have […]

Elise Partin was waiting to see if her governor would take action. The mayor of Cayce, South Carolina, a city of roughly 14,000 people, had heard calls for a local mask order from people in her community and she believed that a statewide edict from Gov. Henry McMaster would prove to be easier to follow and understand for state residents during the coronavirus pandemic. When that didn’t happen, city leaders decided on their own mandate that took effect last week that “masks be worn in indoor places open to the general public,” according to a statement on Cayce’s website. We have all seen the alarming headlines: Coronavirus cases are surging in 40 states, with new cases and hospitalization rates climbing at an alarming rate. Health officials have warned that the U.S. must act quickly to halt the spread—or we risk losing control over the pandemic. There’s a clear consensus that Americans should wear masks in public and continue to practice proper social distancing. While a majority of Americans support wearing masks, widespread and consistent compliance has proven difficult to maintain in communities across the country. Demonstrators gathered outside city halls in Scottsdale, Arizona; Austin, Texas; and other cities to protest […]

The Compulsory wearing of masks Law is nothing to do with safety or science and everything do with cash and PR. Face masks are important. But it’s also important to know there is an alternative. While some prefer to opt for face masks with ties, the balaclava or neck gaiter is another option for a comfortable face covering. Neck gaiters are great for wearing around your neck on socially distanced walks, hikes, bike rides, and more, and are easy to pull up over your nose and mouth when you need them. Because brands have been making them for years, they come in so many different styles already, from sweat wicking ones, to UV protecting ones, and plenty of designs. If you’re thinking […]
The UK government is coming under intense pressure to make the wearing of face masks mandatory in shops and other enclosed public places in England, but if that happens, it would be the wrong move. And so it goes on. Even though deaths with COVID have dropped sharply, even though the virus has clearly petered out in Britain, even though there’s been an official acknowledgement that some 30,000 ‘positive‘ test results have been double-counted, the clamour for more ‘New Abnormal’ measures to be introduced grows by the day. When Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced she would sign a mask-wearing mandate Wednesday, she wasn’t just protecting her citizens—she was adding fire to a growing revolt over Gov. Brian Kemp’s refusal to require face coverings in Georgia. “Atlanta is going to do it today because the fact of the matter is that COVID-19 is wreaking havoc on our city, specifically black and brown communities with higher death rates,” said the mayor, who recently tested positive for the coronavirus, making hers the third and largest city to defy Kemp’s orders. While Kemp has encouraged Georgians to mask up in public spaces—and […]
Authorities in Catalonia, Spain are set to announce the obligatory wearing of masks in public following a resurgence of coronavirus in the region which precipitated a secondary lockdown of some 200,000 people. The proposal is expected to be confirmed on Wednesday afternoon and will take effect on Thursday, said Quim Torra, president of Catalonia’s regional government. At present, the wearing of masks is mandatory only in circumstances where people cannot maintain a 1.5 meter distance from one another. Once the new mandatory mask order is announced, Catalonia will become Spain’s first region to impose such stringent measures. “We want to make […]
Royal Society president Venki Ramakrishnan urged everyone to wear facemasks as the “new normal” until the coronavirus disappears, comparing the refusal to do so with antisocial behaviors like driving without seatbelts or drunk. No one should leave their home without a face covering in their possession, and they should be worn “particularly indoors in enclosed public spaces” where social distancing is difficult, Venkatraman ‘Venki’ Ramakrishnan, a Nobel Prize-winning biologist and head of the UK scientific academy, said on Tuesday. The cartoon in question was branded by Kansas Governor Laura Kelly as anti-Semitic, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker reportedly described it as “another disgusting display by ignorant Republicans who fail to understand that their propaganda is costing lives”. Dane Hicks, GOP chairman for Anderson County, Kansas, has apologized for a cartoon posted on the Facebook page of a newspaper he owns, which drew parallels between the local governor’s order to wear masks in public and the Holocaust. The cartoon in question features Democratic Kansas Governor Laura Kelly wearing a face mask emblazoned with a Jewish Star of David, depicted next to a […]

The apparent comparison between the anti-COVID protective measure and mass murder of Jews immediately landed in quite a few people’s crosshairs, with the publisher strongly urged to take down the offensive cartoon post. A Kansas paper, The Anderson County Review, whose publisher is a county Republican politician, posted a cartoon on its Facebook page drawing similarities between the state governor’s order to wear face masks in public and the murder of Jews by Nazis during World War Two. The cartoon sports governor Laura Kelly donning a mask with the Star of David on it, and with people in the background being […]

Now that President Donald Trump has finally said that he’s “all for masks” amid a massive surge in coronavirus cases, Fox & Friends co-host Steve Doocy on Thursday wondered why wearing a mask to slow the spread of COVID-19 ever became politicized. “For some reason, over the last couple of weeks, a month, masks have become political,” the Fox host remarked during an interview. If he wants to identify that mysterious “some reason,” he needn’t look any further than his own colleagues. Since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. months ago, Fox News hosts and guests have repeatedly […]
Finding the right face mask can be trickier than it seems. There are face masks with nose clips, washable face masks, packs of bulk face masks, more breathable face masks, well, you get the idea. But the most important part of a face mask is that it blocks more particles from entering your mask. This is where a filter comes in. Think of a filter as another layer of fabric, blocking particles from entering your lungs. Unlike more and more layers though, a filter makes it easier to breathe, and will prevent overheating. You can use a lot of things for […]
With state after state mandating that we all wear face coverings in public, it’s never been more important than now to find one you like. The CDC continues to recommend face coverings and social distancing to fight the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, which means you should have a few face masks at your disposal. We’ve done a lot of research over the last couple of weeks to find the best ones for anyone looking to upgrade their face masks. Now, all that research is in one place. Unless a plea for sanity prevails, thousands of Texans will be gathering for the state GOP convention in a COVID-19 epicenter later this month. To make it completely nuts, party officials have said they do not plan to require masks at the July 16-18 event in Houston. “We do not intend to mandate mask wearing at the Convention,” Texas GOP chairman James Dickey said at a June 23 town hall meeting. One of the most common issues I’ve seen with wearing masks is the pain the elastics can cause on your ears. After wearing a mask for a whole day at the beach, I get it. When I was younger, I couldn’t wear headbands (it was the 90s, people) because I would get bad headaches and now some masks are giving me that same feeling. Sore ears suck! But it doesn’t have to be the case. I found a mask that fits securely without using elastic. It’s pain-free and comfortable to wear, no matter how long. What’s unique about the Baggu mask […]
Despite guidance from public health experts, mask-wearing has been a contentious issue in the US. Many politicians, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have criticised President Donald Trump for his refusal to wear a mask in public and for not encouraging the nation to wear them. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Sunday that a federal mandate for all Americans to wear masks is “long overdue” as coronavirus cases in the US continue to surge. “My understanding is that the Centers for Disease Control has recommended the use of masks but not required it because they don’t want to offend the president,” […]
Chances are, you’re going to need a few face masks. I’ve already lost several, for example. Maybe you want to mix and match with your outfit. Or maybe you need a few to rotate through in case they get dirty. Whatever the case may be, face masks are like T-shirts, it’s a good idea to have several you love. Thankfully, plenty of brands are selling masks in packs so you can always have a few on deck. Here are some of our favorites. Everlane Face Masks: Everlane makes masks that come in a pack of three. With the advent of an infectious disease outbreak, epidemiologists and public health officials quickly try to forecast deaths and infections using complex computer models. But with a brand new virus like the one that causes COVID-19, these estimates are complicated by a dearth of credible information on symptoms, contagion and those who are most at risk. My team at the Goldenson Center for Actuarial Research has developed a free, user-friendly computer model that has a different goal. It demonstrates how infections and deaths progress on a daily basis over a three-month period depending on how people behave in response to the […]

Something I’ve noticed about masks is that having them fit snugly on your face can be a little tricky. Your nose can just push the mask up, leaving the mask ill-fitting and you’ll find yourself breathing out of the sides of the mask, which is pretty annoying. Thankfully, some genius out there invented the nose wire, which wraps around your nose to both give the mask added security on your face and to help it fit more snugly. If you’re looking for a mask with a nosewire, we have some of our favorite picks to make your search a little easier. […]
For me, having a machine washable face mask is a top priority. Really, a face mask is like any other piece of clothing, and so, you need to be able to wash it easily, especially since it’s summer and you’re likely to get it all sweaty. Some masks are hand washable, but ideally, you want one that you can just throw in the washing machine with everything else. To help you pick out a great, easily washable mask, we’ve rounded up some of our favorites. Outdoor Voices Face Mask: Outdoor Voices’ face masks are made of an 86% Polyester and 14% […]
As COVID-19 cases surge in US states like Florida, California, Arizona and Texas, US President Donald Trump has advised his administration to slow down testing, a clear indicator of his inept response to the outbreak, investigative reporter and columnist Dave Lindorff told Sputnik Wednesday. “It’s a basic kind of hygiene behavior to [get tested to] protect your friends and family … what Trump has said, he’s succeeded in convincing his rabid and rather low-wattage, poorly educated base that wearing a mask is a sign of being a liberal. They’re all going to get infected,” Lindorff told Loud & Clear John Kiriakou. […]
Alethea AI, a synthetic media company, is piloting “privacy-preserving face skins,” or digital masks that counter facial recognition algorithms and help users preserve privacy on pre-recorded videos. The move comes as companies such as IBM, Microsoft, and Amazon announced they would suspend the sale of their facial recognition technology to law enforcement agencies. “This is a new technique we developed inhouse that wraps a face with our AI algorithms,” said Alethea AI CEO Arif Khan. “Avatars are fun to play with and develop, but these ‘masks/skins’ are a different, more potent, animal to preserve privacy.” See also: Human Rights Foundation Funds […]

TULSA, Oklahoma—Trump flags, coronavirus conspiracies, and cartoons of the president pissing on the CNN logo outnumbered face masks on Saturday afternoon outside the arena where President Trump will hold his first mid-pandemic campaign rally. The rally is considered US President Donald Trump’s first big public event since the beginning of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country. The event, scheduled for Saturday, has been criticised by many health officials, warning it could be a “super spreader” of the respiratory disease. US President Donald Trump said on Friday in an interview with Axios that he is expecting to “have a wild evening” at his Saturday rally in Oklahoma’s Tulsa City amid the coronavirus outbreak and the ongoing nationwide anti-racism and anti-police brutality demonstrations. Although the Trump reelection campaign is planning to make the wearing of […]

We’re in this for the long haul. The pandemic is still a threat, which means we still need to wear face coverings when outside. But as states work their way through phases of reopening, we’re planning on spending more time outside, doing things in public rather than the comfort of our home. You know, like how we used to. That means we need face masks that work both with our comfort level and our senses of style. Face masks don’t need to hinder our aesthetic, because they come in every color, pattern, and style under the sun. We’ve rounded up some […]

In what looked like a carefully planned carjacking, a vehicle full of face masks went missing in southwestern Germany within just ten minutes – as if to prove that personal protective gear has become the new gold. The prelude to the brazen theft saw a local driver make a brief stop near the town of Wertheim in the state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. He parked his white Ford van – loaded with a whopping 400,000 protective masks – outside a fast food restaurant and went inside to take a break. The driver was absent for only ten minutes, but it was enough for […]

The debate over the necessity of the general public using masks has persisted in Finland ever since the arrival of the coronavirus amid conflicting messaging from various authorities. So far, the government has refrained from mandating or even recommending face masks, despite numerous calls from experts. A government-appointed scientific panel has recommended the use of protective masks in public and on public transportation in Finland to reduce the spread of coronavirus until a vaccine is found and made available, national broadcaster Yle reported. The panel also noted a significant risk of a second, more severe second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic […]
Barcelona fans are being given the chance to recreate the look of their heroes by buying replicas of masks that the club’s squad and coaching staff are wearing to training – but fans say the products are capitalizing on COVID-19. While some of Barcelona’s European rivals have charged around a quarter of the price for masks, the reigning La Liga champions are asking for €18 (around $20) for each item, designed to protect against COVID-19 transmission. Barca encouraged their vast global fanbase to buy the garments and provided a gallery of famous faces wearing the new masks, including major summer signings Frenkie De […]
The coronavirus face mask game has hit a new height – or rather low – at a post office in Ukraine, where a woman without the protective gear instead chose to strip off her panties and wear them on her face to comply with the law. Captured by a CCTV camera at a Nova Poshta (New Post) office in Ukraine’s capital of Kiev, the salacious video surfaced online late on Monday evening. The footage shows a woman without a protective face mask – which are now mandatory across the country – as she speaks with an office clerk. Confronted about having […]
Charlotte St. Martin, the president of the Broadway League, makes clear she does not “have a crystal ball.” But her personal belief is that Broadway will reopen in January 2021, she reveals in an exclusive interview with The Daily Beast. For St. Martin, Broadway’s post-pandemic reopening means safety protocols being in place to ensure audience members can sit next to each other as they did before, likely—at least in the first phase of reopening—wearing masks, with actors, singers, and dancers able to perform in the same numbers and proximity, and with the same energy, as before. “We know that we cannot […]
Nearly three months into the coronavirus pandemic, and despite the deaths of more than 100 nurses from COVID-19, the majority of U.S. nurses say they are still not getting adequate protective equipment. A survey of nearly 23,000 nurses, conducted by National Nurses United between April 15 and May 10, found a whopping 87 percent were still having to reuse single-use respirator masks with COVID-19 patients. More than a quarter had to reuse “decontaminated” masks—a new and relatively unstudied practice that has been proven to work for only a limited amount of time. On top of this, just 16 percent of nurses […]
A recent Finnish study concluded that masks slow the progress of the coronavirus, but cannot entirely eliminate its spread. Overall, they were found to be beneficial, if applied properly and coupled with other precautions. Fabric masks do not protect the wearer from coronavirus, but can help protect other people, the Research Centre of Finland (VTT) has concluded. Researchers also found that a fabric mask is several times inferior to professional protective equipment when it comes to holding back the virus. Having tested polyester and cotton masks, VTT concluded that polyester is a better option than cotton due to its water-resistance and […]
Police in Santa Ana, California, are reporting a 50 percent increase in robberies since the beginning of the lock down as criminals take advantage of everyone wearing masks. Last Friday, armed masked men robbed a gas station in the city, without initially raising any suspicions since everyone is wearing masks. Elias Khawan, the owner of the gas station and convenience store, told CBS Los Angeles that the mask requirements are placing his staff in danger. “It’s horrible,” he said. “I mean, I know we have to take certain measures because of what’s happening with COVID-19, but it’s the perfect script or […]
