Yerevan and Baku have accused each other of breaking the ceasefire declared on Saturday. The nations are fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh, an Armenian-populated part of Azerbaijan, with hundreds reported killed during the flare-up. The mutual accusations came on Sunday just hours after the fighting was supposed to be stopped by all sides on midnight Sunday local time (20:00 GMT). Azerbaijan said its opponents shelled locations around the town of Jabrayil which were claimed to have been captured by Azerbaijani troops during the hostilities. Armenia said Azerbaijan broke the truce twice, firing artillery shells and rockets and attempting to move troops into a […]

Medics from as far away as France who travelled to help as fighting between Armenians and Azerbaijanis erupted in Nagorno-Karabakh, have told RT they weren’t fully prepared for the atrocities and called for the fighting to stop. Intense clashes between ethnic Armenian and Azeri forces over Nagorno-Karabakh have been raging since late September. The mainly Armenian-populated region, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, declared independence from Baku in 1991 and has since been backed by Armenia, which has stopped short of officially recognizing it. Azeri authorities consider Nagorno-Karabakh illegally occupied by Yerevan, proclaiming that they want to get their […]
An interview with Ashot Beglaryan for VT …by Alla Pierce, Belarus [ Editor’s Note: Alla brings us a perspective on the current fighting based on her earlier trip in 2016, where she reported on the short war. Before that she had reported on the disastrous Ukraine war. Here we are again viewing the continuing scourge of the regional wars being instantly fueled by the ever growing pool of cheap hired gunmen, hiding behind their religious veil of honoring some warped religious duty, and looking for some fast money, or purely for the enjoyment of killing people with no judicial concerns whatsoever. Azerbaijan and Armenia have blamed each other of violating the ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh region late on Saturday. Capital of self-proclaimed republic, Stepankert, has reportedly come under heavy shelling. Azerbaijan, for its part, accused Armenia of striking the town of Terter with artillery fire. RT correspondent Igor Zhdanov said alert sirens were heard in Stepankert, the capital of the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region, late on Saturday. Several explosions – both in the air and on the land – were observed in the city, he added. The ceasefire, reached on Friday during a meeting of the rivaling parties in Moscow, came into effect […]
The mediated ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region cannot be considered a solution to the conflict, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has said, reaffirming its support for Baku. The suspension of hostilities in the contested region, brokered by Russia on Friday, is “an important first step,” but it “will not replace a permanent solution,” Ankara said on Saturday. Turkey “will continue to stand by Azerbaijan on the battlefield and at the negotiations table,” the statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry added. Hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh, a breakaway part of Azerbaijan supported by Armenia, reignited on September 27. Each of […]

Armenian leader Nikol Pashinyan has called on the world to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, subject of a decades-long feud between Yerevan and Baku. He believes Paris will be one of the first to do this. “I expect the French president to recognize the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh,” the prime minister said, speaking to French network TV5Monde. “I do believe that there is simply no other way to address the concerns raised by Emmanuel Macron in the current situation.” Along with US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron last week called for “an immediate cessation of […]

Tehran can’t tolerate deploying militants from Syria to the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, where fighting between Azerbaijan and Armenia affects Iran’s borders and may evolve into a regional conflict, President Rouhani warned. For the first time in three decades, residents of Stepanakert, the capital of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh, have hidden in bomb shelters as rocket fire from the Azeri forces hit the city, RT’s crew on the ground has found. Nagorno-Karabakh – a predominantly ethnic Armenian mountainous region – split from Azerbaijan and, with Armenia’s help, fought a bloody war in the 1990s. Amid the ongoing escalation of hostilities, the city now finds itself affected directly by the fighting, which has not happened in three decades. The intense military conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan has reached the largest city and de-facto capital of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region where Azerbaijani shelling has destroyed the Emergencies Ministry complex. The shells and rockets fired by the Azerbaijani artillery that used to explode on the outskirts of the city known as Stepanakert to its ethnic Armenian residents and officially called Khankendi by Baku are now rocking the very city center and hitting residential areas even at night. A military hospital and two apartment buildings were damaged in the latest Azerbaijani shelling launched at the city after dusk. An RT crew at […]

by Katherine Frisk for Veterans Today (deceased/missed) If you have absolutely no idea where Nagorno-Karabakh is, do not feel alone. Neither did I. The region is mostly mountainous and forested. Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but most of the region is governed by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, a de facto independent nation established on the basis of the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast of the Azerbaijan SSR. A new round of hostilities started in the Nagorno-Karabakh region on 27 September, with Azerbaijan and Armenia accusing each other of carrying out provocations that resulted in civilian and military casualties.
