It could keep extending westwards, in a way that would spur Americans’ interest in their nation’s history and conflicts abroad. As a parting shot, on its way out of Afghanistan, the United States military launched a drone attack that the Pentagon called a “righteous strike.” The final missile fired during 20 years of occupation, that […]

Leading signatories of the public Great Barrington Declaration, named after the US town in which it was written, include Harvard University professor of medicine Dr Martin Kulldorff, Oxford University professor Dr Sunetra Gupta and Stanford University Medical School professor Dr Jay Bhattacharya, all epidemiologists. Reddit user T1m_Burr analyzed data from the US Social Security Administration to try to determine what names will replace “Karen” as a pejorative for a privileged white woman who is constantly annoyed and demands to speak to the manager. In different decades, his graphs show, various names could potentially supplant Karen on the entitlement […]
Love him or hate him, one can’t ignore him: every time Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the nation, from his “bhakts (followers)” to his critics, everyone is glued to the screen and closely listens to everything he says. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is known to make a grand event out of even small developments, turned 70 on Thursday. On this occasion, he is releasing a collection titled ‘Letters To Mother’ referring to his ‘ambitions and anxieties’. While this is all sweet, the “birthday boy’s” special day wouldn’t be complete without a look back at his top gaffes, which […]

The Wisconsin Department of Justice (DoJ) identified the police officer who shot 29-year-old Jacob Blake as Rustin Sheskey. Sheskey has been a police officer with the Kenosha Police Department for seven years. According to a DoJ press release, there is no body camera footage of the incident, as the Kenosha Police Department does not have any body cameras. During an investigation following the incident, Blake admitted to having a knife in his possession. The debate on renaming streets that refer to Germany’s colonial past has been going on for many years and recently gained momentum following global protests against racial discrimination and police brutality, which were sparked by a death of a black man in the United States, who died at the hands of a white police officer. Authorities in the German capital Berlin said they would change the name of the street Mohrenstraße (Moor street), because it has racist undertones and “incriminates and harms the national and international reputation of Berlin”. Mohren, the German name for Moor, is an old-fashioned term used to […]
Since he was in elementary school summiting flagpoles, eating his lunch at the top of basketball hoops, and wriggling his way up the exposed seams of brick buildings, Kai Lightner has been a fearless climber. The 20-year-old professional from Fayetteville, North Carolina, has tackled some of the hardest routes in the world, ascending the formidable Era Vella in Margalef, Spain, when he was just 15. Still there are some spots he won’t go near—not due to any dangerous grade or slope, but because of the name. Across the U.S., Canada, and parts of Mexico, the so-called “First Ascensionists” who create routes […]
One of the flies in question was apparently named after Marvel author Stan Lee because the creature’s “black eyes and bristly white whiskers resemble the famous comic book creator”. A number of previously unknown species of predatory insects that were discovered in Australia ended up being named after popular comic book characters – and one famous comic book author – by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Live Science reports. We had ANG LEE in Thursday’s puzzle, which makes a crossword writer feel good. Why? Because I was able to use both the director’s first *and* last names in the grid. You see first *or* last names all the time in crosswords, of course, so it’s fun to surprise the solver with a full name. It wasn’t that tough to fit ANG LEE in there, however, since it’s only six letters long, plus it’s full of common, easy-to-use letters. Six-letter celebs appear a lot in crosswords, notably AL GORE, AMY TAN, YO-YO MA, and ED KOCH. No full-name credit for sneaking […]

US President Donald Trump threatened to veto this year’s proposed $740 billion defense bill if it includes an amendment requiring the Pentagon to rechristen bases named after Confederate leaders. However, the president is unlikely to veto anything regarding the military, award-winning foreign correspondent Jon Jeter told Political Misfits. “I will Veto the Defense Authorization Bill if the Elizabeth ‘Pocahontas’ Warren (of all people!) Amendment, which will lead to the renaming (plus other bad things!) of Fort Bragg, Fort Robert E. Lee, and many other Military Bases from which we won Two World Wars, is in the Bill!” Trump tweeted on July […]
Critics have described the Black Lives Matter movement as a “scam” and questioned the point of a move by a Major League Soccer team which has replaced player names with the names of black victims of police brutality. Philadelphia Union players wore the names of victims on the backs of their shirts when they played New York City FC in the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando on Thursday. The shirts also had the message “one name, too many” printed on them, revealed by the players for their pre-match photo after they had warmed up in Black Lives Matter t-shirts. “Our […]

Earlier, US President Donald Trump tweeted that would veto the defence authorisation bill if it contains an amendment calling for changing the Confederate-related names of US military bases. The US House Armed Services Committee voted for the amendment to the annual defence policy bill that envisages stripping Confederate names off of military bases and other property within one year. The amendment, offered by Representatives Anthony Brown and Don Bacon, was approved 32-23. The latter, along with Rep. Paul Mitchell, crossed the party line to support it. Commenting on the voting results, Brown said that the changes are supported by “vast majority of […]
…by Jonas E. Alexis It was about 9:30 p.m. when several police officers got a call to go to a convenience store at South First Street and Glenfield Drive, Texas. It was related to a 29-year-old Gabriel Cobarrubias, who “used his car to block another vehicle that was parked at the store.”[1] Cobarrubias, who was driving a red Infinity, was obviously asked to move his car, but he refused. “What are you gonna do?” he responded to the employee. Cobarrubias, in order to put fear in the heart of the employee, grabbed his two handguns and fired several rounds in the […]

Submitted to VT by the Washington Post Ty Seidule, retired U.S. Army brigadier general and professor emeritus of history at West Point, writes in Washington Post Opinions: Ten Army posts named during World Wars I and II honor men who fought for the Confederate States of America against the United States of America. These men committed treason to create a country dedicated to human enslavement. The posts must be renamed — as should another, in Virginia, given what its name honors. But whom should the Army honor? The number of Army heroes over the course of the service’s 245-year existence is enormous. […]

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has appointed ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt to lead a panel on post-pandemic “reform” of health and education systems, despite criticism for taking other billionaires with conflicts of interest on board. Schmidt will head a ‘Blue Ribbon Commission’ tasked with “reimagining” New York’s existing systems of healthcare and education, Cuomo announced on Wednesday during his daily coronavirus briefing. The decision to place such power in the hands of another unelected billionaire has riled critics already uneasy about the governor’s post-Covid-19 plans. The panel’s initial priorities will be “tele-health, remote learning and broadband,” Schmidt announced, dropping into Cuomo’s […]
