Facing mounting public pressure and a crush of state lawsuits, President Donald Trump’s new postmaster general announced Tuesday he is halting some operational changes to mail delivery that critics blamed for widespread delays and warned could disrupt the November election. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy said he would “suspend” several of his initiatives — including the removal of the distinctive blue mailboxes that […]
The UK government has announced that students in England will now be awarded the grade that their teachers had predicted for them based on past performance rather than rely on an algorithm to help generate their marks. The move was criticized as the algorithm used to assess grade predictions made by teachers saw marks lowered for almost 40 percent of students taking their main school-leaving exams. Students were not allowed to sit this year’s exams due to the coronavirus pandemic. The algorithm – devised by the exams regulator in England, Ofqual – will now be ditched, Education Minister Gavin Williamson said. […]
The head of the Department of Homeland Security set off alarms after saying that federal agents were making ‘proactive’ arrests in Portland amid heated protests, drawing comparisons to the dystopian “pre-crime” of Minority Report. Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf appeared on a Fox News segment on Tuesday night, discussing the ongoing protests and rioting across Portland, which he says have continued for “52 nights in a row” as federal officers there are stretched to the limit. “Because we don’t have that local law enforcement support, we are having to go out and proactively arrest individuals, and we need to do that […]
A decision by the Virginia state government to order a giant American banner to be pulled from the would-be seat of the local General Assembly amid fears protesters could tear the flag down, has faced pushback online. The huge banner, made of tarps, which hung about two stores from the ground, was ordered to be taken down from what is set to become the future seat of the state legislature just as the nation was gearing up to mark July 4th. State officials argued that the removal is a neccessary precautionary measure, so that Black Lives Matter protesters won’t see red […]
The California state government has issued a directive barring singing and chanting at religious services, citing dangers posed by Covid-19. The order has been condemned as blatantly discriminatory, some even deeming it illegal. The new mandate, issued earlier this week, “strongly” recommends that all religious gatherings be conducted remotely, but offers additional rules for those who insist on worshiping in person – including the controversial ban on singing, a common practice across a number of faiths. “Activities such as singing and chanting negate the risk reduction achieved through six feet of physical distancing,” the new guidelines say. Places of worship must […]
The Democratic Party has provoked a collective eye roll on Twitter after blasting the president for an upcoming rally at Mount Rushmore, saying it would honor “white supremacy” on sacred native land. The tweet was quickly nuked. The Dems’ latest hot take on Monday night stood for only moments before it was sent down the memory hole, though by then it had already been preserved for eternity on an internet archive site. The hot-button tweet said President Donald Trump had “disrespected Native communities,” and would do so again by holding his July 4th rally at Mount Rushmore, which it deemed “sacred” […]
The New York Mayor ordered a statue of Theodore Roosevelt on horseback, flanked by a Native American man and an African man, to be removed, arguing it feeds into racial stereotypes. “The American Museum of Natural History has asked to remove the Theodore Roosevelt statue because it explicitly depicts Black and Indigenous people as subjugated and racially inferior,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement on Sunday. De Blasio noted that the city authorities sided with the museum, calling the idea to get rid of the “problematic” statue “the right decision” taken in the “right time.” The NYC […]
Twitter has removed a satirical video shared by US President Donald Trump – a parody CNN clip it flagged as “manipulated media” after the broadcaster saw red over the tweet and following complaints from the footage’s owner. The meme clip, which featured mock CNN chyron and was meant as a dig at what Trump and his supporters see as biased media coverage of his presidency, was pulled on Friday after a company representing the original creators of the video complained to social media platforms, saying the footage was used without permission. In addition to Twitter, Facebook has also deleted the clip. […]
