Above Photo: The gist of the AFL-CIO response to this year’s union membership figures was, “We need labor law reform. Pass the PRO Act!” But labor law reform going to pass anytime soon. We need a plan B to organize under current conditions. U.S. Department of Labor. We Have To Organize. In January our movement got its annual punch in the gut from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, whose 2021 report shows 241,000 fewer union members than the previous year. Just 1 in 10 workers belongs to a union; in the private sector it’s 1 in 16. In 20 years the country gained […]

Two weeks after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released sobering statistics showing a record-breaking number of drug overdoses in the U.S. in the first year of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 260 advocacy groups called on lawmakers Tuesday to urgently pass public health proposals to mitigate the […]
As groups from New Zealand to South Africa to North America prepare for the #BoycottPUMA Global Day of Action and PUMA’s celebrity ambassadors and business partners raise ethical concerns, join nearly 60,000 people calling on PUMA to end its support for Israeli apartheid. It’s not a good time to be PUMA’s CEO. Last month we learned just how nervous he is about the growing campaign to boycott PUMA over its support for Israeli apartheid. Teams in several countries are dropping PUMA, and PUMA’s celebrity ambassadors and business partners are beginning to raise ethical concerns. Now nearly 60,000 people have signed a petition to […]

Maine Senator Susan Collins says she will vote ‘no’ to confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, since it’s too close to the election, while refusing to say anything critical about how Barrett’s originalist judicial philosophy might imperil a woman’s right to choose. Collins is a Republican who supports abortion rights, a brand that has carried her to victory four times, but with Barrett’s confirmation all but certain, Collins’ longtime balancing act may have reached its tipping point. The GOP is getting closer to reaching its goal, the overturning of Roe v Wade, the now almost 50-year-old ruling that made […]
CNN let Netflix CEO Reed Hastings off the hook for the second time in four days, neglecting to ask him even once about ‘Cuties,’ the film that ignited a campaign to cancel the streaming service for showing alleged “child porn.” The latest Netflix-friendly interview aired Sunday on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” program, where host Brian Stelter kept the discussion focused primarily on promoting Hastings’ new book. CNN host Poppy Harlow took a similar approach on Thursday, steering clear of hard-hitting questions and talking mostly about the book in the 10 minutes she had with Hastings. Harlow interviewed the CEO the day after […]
By Tony Cox, a US journalist who has written or edited for Bloomberg and several major daily newspapers. The Trump administration is giving rioters in Portland at least a risk of accountability, filing US District Court charges when the local district attorney declines to prosecute and deputizing state police to make federal arrests. Kevin Phomma became the latest Portland protester to be hit with federal charges, as the US Attorney’s Office for the region announced Friday that he was indicted for felony civil disorder. Phomma, 26, who allegedly assaulted police with bear spray faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison […]
John Brennan claims he’s not the subject of a criminal investigation and John Durham told him so. However, it’s more likely Brennan committed perjury numerous times in their eight hour get-together on Friday. As we reported yesterday, John Brennan is the king of corrupt spin. It looks like all things related to the Trump – Russia collusion fairy tale go back to Brennan. The interactions between the US and foreign entities most likely involved the CIA and lead back to Brennan. It’s all Brennan. This is why it’s puzzling when you hear the word on the street that Brennan is not […]

By Cloe Poisson for the CT Mirror. Connecticut is one of the most segregated places in the country. Despite widespread protests over racial inequities, Gov. Ned Lamont and other leaders are resisting calls to address the state’s affordable housing crisis. On a recent Sunday, protesters marched through the center of Weston, a small, wealthy town in […]
June trading volume on decentralized exchanges set a record high of $1.52 billion, up 70% from May, according to data from Dune Analytics. This double-digit percentage growth is simply “the continuation of a trend dating back to the end of [2019],” Jack Purdy, decentralized finance analyst at Messari, told CoinDesk. Curve and Uniswap control the largest amount of traded volume, recording $350 million and $446 million, respectively, in June. Both protocols are automated market makers that can also function as decentralized exchanges. Balancer, a similar platform, recorded $93 million in traded volume, up 2,460% from $3.6 million in May. Significant growth […]
In the days since The New York Times broke the news on U.S. intelligence examining claims of Russian bounties being offered to kill American military personnel in Afghanistan, President Donald Trump has turned his ire not at the Russian government, but instead on two of his favorite enemies: the news media and their confidential sources. According to two people familiar with the matter, the president in recent days has privately expressed—“rather loudly,” in the words of one of the sources—his desire for a leak investigation into how that story ended up in the Times, and his wish for the leaker or […]
Could someone please, for the love of God, teach J.K. Rowling how to read the room? Over the weekend, as protests calling for the protection of black lives spread across the world, the Harry Potter author took a moment to fire off a transphobic tweetstorm mocking the use of non-gendered language and insisting that “erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives.” And on Wednesday, hours after yet another Harry Potter actor disavowed her comments, Rowling tripled down in a blog post that attempts to characterize her views as feminism. In reality, it’s a […]
Open contracts on bitcoin options rose to record highs on Thursday as the cryptocurrency’s price rose into five figures. Data from major exchanges – Deribit, LedgerX, Bakkt, OKEx, and CME – shows that open interest on options rose above $1 billion, surpassing the previous all-time high of $70 million registered on Feb. 14, according to crypto derivatives research firm Skew. The metric has increased sharply from the low of $410 million observed in March when the bitcoin market crashed on so-called “Black Thursday.” Source: Skew Deribit, the world’s biggest crypto options exchange by volume, contributed nearly 90% of the total on […]
