For educators like myself, no matter how far we teach from Uvalde, Texas, the recent mass shooting at Robb Elementary, like so many before it, is still palpable in our classrooms — among students and teachers alike. Two days after the massacre, Toni Wright, one of my students in New Haven, Conn., stood in our high school’s hallway crying. “I couldn’t even make it to school yesterday,” they told me. “I got on the bus, I made it down the street, but […]

The CIA agent who captured top al-Qaeda terrorist Abu Zubaydah traces the Guantanamo prisoner’s 20 years of torture, ending with the government’s failure to put him and four others on trial. The Guardian reported last week that a recently-declassified CIA Inspector General’s report from 2008 found that CIA officers at a covert detention site in Afghanistan used a prisoner, Ammar al-Baluch, as a “training prop,” taking turns smashing his head against a plywood wall and leaving him with permanent brain damage. Baluch is currently one of five […]

The campaign to make ecocide an international crime took center stage in the Hague on Tuesday as Bangladesh, Samoa and Vanuatu advocated criminalizing environmental destruction during a virtual forum at the annual meeting of the International Criminal Court’s 123 member nations. The forum, attended by more than 1,300 individual participants, represented a collective cry for justice from three of the […]
In late October 2004, South Park aired one of its most iconic episodes—a pre-election installment called “Douche and Turd,” which crystallized the show’s nihilism, political and otherwise. The douche and turd were an on-the-nose symbol for the idea that in any given election, both politicians tend to be equally unappealing. But on Wednesday night, the long-running animated show defied its central tenet—the one insisting that caring at all is the stupidest position to take in any argument. And it did so in a way that one might imagine could perplex its creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, in their younger years. […]
A Kentucky woman has sent out an “urgent plea” after a box containing her mother’s cremated remains went missing after she mailed them to her sister in Florida. Earlier this month, on September 9, Amy Redford sent the package via the US Postal Service (USPS) to her sister’s address in Jacksonville, Florida. The box included a bright red label saying “cremated remains,” according to the Florida-Times Union. Although the box was delivered the next day to the right address, Redford didn’t realize that her sister had moved. Redford has collaborated with postal inspectors and the apartment manager to determine what has […]

Thank you!” Trump further noted that Afkarai and […]
On late Tuesday, protests in Kenosha, Wisconsin, turned deadly after three people were shot, two fatally. Later, 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse was arrested after fleeing to his home state of Illinois and charged with first-degree murder. Kyle Rittenhouse’s lawyer, L. Lin Wood, is claiming that his teen client, who was arrested after murdering two people and injuring one with a semit automatic rifle, was defending himself. The lawyer referred to newly-emerged video that appears to reveal that the only shooting survivor, Gaige Grosskreutz, was in possession of a handgun. “‘Video eye’ does not lie. Kyle Rittenhouse acted in self-defense. Murder charges are factually […]
On Thursday night, Stephen Colbert’s Late Show went live after the fourth and final night of the Democratic National Convention. And, reacting to Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s convention-closing speech, where he made an impassioned plea for “a united America,” Colbert nearly jumped out of his chair with excitement. Then, the comedian got serious—and issued his own address of sorts to his viewers. “Well, here’s the deal,” the comic said. “Biden spoke for over 10 minutes and addressed all the pain that Trump has inflicted upon our country; all the possibilities for healing our nation. But most importantly, not once did […]

The charitable trust has been under the scanner from the beginning, as it was not subject to public audit, but donations to it are eligible for tax rebate. India’s apex court on Tuesday dismissed a petition seeking the transfer of funds from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s controversial PM CARES Fund, an acronym for Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund, to the official […]
Former FBI Attorney Kevin Clinesmith is expected to plead guilty to altering Carter Page evidence to support the FISA warrant used to spy on the Donald Trump campaign in 2016. 38-year-old Clinemsith altered an email from CIA investigators used to request a FISA warrant and renewals on Trump campaign advisor Carter Page. Carter Page previously worked as a source for the CIA, however Clinesmith falsely said Page was “never” a CIA source. According to Durham’s charging document (and also in IG Horowitz’s report), “certain individuals” on the Crossfire Hurricane were told in an August 2016 memorandum that Page was a CIA […]
The ancient missive reportedly shows how the rivals of ancient Egyptians had to seek the latter’s help in the face of the looming calamity. A request for aid sent by the Queen of the Hittites to legendary Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II over three thousand years ago provides additional insight into the nature of the crisis that plagued the region back then, the Daily Express reports. Citing the “Egypt’s Unexplained Files” TV series, the newspaper notes that around 1,250 BC, the region in question was ravaged by “an extreme drought”, and the queen sent this missive, written on a clay tablet, despite […]
In late 2019, Conservative MP David Davis and Labour’s Dan Jarvis joined Reprieve, a UK-based human rights non-profit, in seeking a public judicial inquiry into torture and rendition allegations involving Britain’s intelligence services after it was revealed that agents had taken part in such actions on at least 15 occasions since 9/11. UK Judges Dame Victoria Sharp and Justice Farbey have thrown out an appeal by a pair of lawmakers and a charity to hold a publish inquiry into British intelligence agents’ involvement in torture and rendition on Tuesday, ruling that the inquiry will instead be heard in secret, The Guardian […]
World’s Strongest Man powerhouse Eddie Hall has written to every member of the UK Parliament, revealing his own mental health battle and urging them to overturn the “injustice” of loosening lockdown controls on pubs but not gyms. Hall argued that people would be welcome to “drink themselves into oblivion” before they would be able to improve their health at public gyms and leisure centers, which will remain closed while bars are allowed to throw open their doors next week. Calling the ruling “baffling, frustrating, nonsensical and downright unfair”, the Staffordshire powerlifter pointed out that the health and fitness industry was worth £5 […]
In a new interview with The New York Times, Jon Stewart insisted that he does not miss hosting The Daily Show. “If you’re asking, Do you wish you had a show? Sometimes I do,” he said. “But not the one that I had. The one that I had is in wonderful hands and continues to elevate in a way that I couldn’t have.” That statement has never been more true than in our current political moment. As the only Black host on mainstream late-night television, Trevor Noah has met the moment when it comes to systemic racism and police brutality. And […]
FIFA has responded to a threat to boycott US football matches by President Donald Trump, urging the world to “say no to racism and violence” after the latest row over athletes who take a knee during the American national anthem. Trump tweeted that he would stop following US soccer after learning that a policy requiring players to stand during the national anthem had been dropped, insisting: “I won’t be watching anymore!” He then renewed his persistent criticism of high-profile stars who make the symbolic move in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, retweeting a claim by Florida Republican Matt Gaetz that […]
