The development comes as England announces a major relaxation of safety measures introduced to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and even cinemas have been allowed to open, as well as places of worship. The former leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Nigel Farage, is no stranger to criticism, but this time the situation may well be much more serious. The prominent Brexit supporter drew ire from social media users after he tweeted a photo of himself enjoying a pint. The politician captioned the photo saying: 12 o’ clock, first customer in. Love it. The post […]
Newser: You might call them dueling dashboards. A Florida data scientist who got fired for insubordination has set up a dashboard tallying the state’s coronavirus numbers—which eclipse the official count, the Washington Post reports. “I wanted to build an application that delivered data and helped people get tested and helped them get resources that they need from their community,” says Rebekah Jones. “And that’s what I ended up building with this new dashboard.” Fired in mid-May, Jones claims her old supervisors at the Florida Dept. of Health pressured her to alter numbers in the public-facing portal. She says the official tally underestimates the infection total […]
After years of research, the Bank of Canada is preparing to design its own central bank digital currency (CDBC). Revealing its plans in a June 11 job posting, the central bank said it was “reinventing central banking” and radically rethinking the nature of Canada’s cash. “The Bank of Canada is embarking on a program of major social significance to design a contingent system for a CBDC, which can be thought of as a banknote, but in digital form,” the bank wrote. CoinDesk’s request for comment was not returned by press time. Still, the job posting said as much about the new […]
Guardian: Standing among a group of peaceful anti-racism protesters in downtown Seattle on a recent Saturday afternoon, Mando Avery held his seven-year-old son’s hand as he and three generations of his African American family finished a prayer with members of their church. Jared Campbell, a police officer with Seattle PD, used mace on a 9-year-old child and refused to give his badge number. We found it anyway. It’s 8470. He needs to be held accountable for his on the job child abuse. pic.twitter.com/ZrtVrUhbhV — Ninja Economics (@NinjaEconomics) May 31, 2020 Only feet away, Evan Hreha, 34, a hairstylist, arrived at the protests […]
Blackface, the use of black make-up to depict a black person, is widely considered an offensive practice with a racist history in the United States. Instagram personalities in several countries have darkened their skin to show support for anti-racism George Floyd protests – only to get accused of being racists themselves. Several Instagram influencers have come under fire for donning blackface in what turned out to be a misguided attempt to take a stand against racism. A Polish artist going by the handle Saint Hoax has compiled screenshots of blackface images that have been slammed as a tone-deaf gesture, given the […]
