Many politicians, academics, media pundits are wont of invoking the “rule of law”, a “rules-based international order”, “values diplomacy” etc. But what do all these benevolent-sounding slogans actually mean in practice? Who makes the rules, who interprets them, who enforces them? What transparency and accountability accompany these noble pledges? In a very real sense, we already have a “rules based international order” in the form of the UN Charter and its “supremacy clause”, article 103 of which grants it priority over all other treaties and agreements. The norms established in the Charter are rational, but […]

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US President Donald Trump will take part in the upcoming third round of presidential debates despite the fact that the Commission on Presidential Debates has decided to change the rules allowing for the muting of microphones, Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien said. Stepien said in a Monday statement that the president “is committed to debating Joe Biden regardless of last minute rule changes.” Stepien said the debates commission was “biased” and was trying to “provide advantage to their favored candidate.” Earlier on Monday, the commission issued a statement saying that Trump and his Democratic rival Joe Biden will […]

Last week, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the country had reached a “perilous turning point” in the fight against COVID-19 as he announced a new set of restrictions in England. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s recent confusion over the new coronavirus restrictions added fuel to the fire of a Tory revolt, The Telegraph reports. The newspaper cited an unnamed Conservative lawmaker in northeast England as saying that “what happened with Boris [Johnson] only strengthened the argument for greater Parliamentary scrutiny of new rules”. “He can’t work out what the rules are because there is no logic to them. It’s […]
“I also was quite surprised,” Joe Lo Truglio admits when I ask how in the world he ended up getting cast as former Attorney General Jeff Sessions in Showtime’s The Comey Rule. For one, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star is almost entirely known for comedy and the new two-part series—based in part on former FBI Director James Comey’s book A Higher Loyalty—is deadly serious. On top of that, Lo Truglio is about a quarter-century younger than the septuagenarian Alabama politician. “You know, it’s not like I’m super good looking, but I’m also not 70 years old,” the actor jokes on this week’s […]
Last week, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that a ban on social gatherings of more than six people will be re-imposed in England as of 14 September, after more than 3,000 confirmed coronavirus cases had been recorded there for the third day in a row. UK Policing Minister Kit Malthouse has called on Brits to report their neighbours to the police if they see them violating the government’s new “rule of six” COVID-19 restriction. “During lockdown we did see a surge in reports coming through to police. If people are concerned, if they do think there’s been a contravention, then […]
An Ethereum smart contract feature that offers rebates for fees has developers scratching their heads, wondering if they should toss the old code in light of an exponential rise in transaction costs. Called gas tokens, these smart contract loopholes are a way to send transactions on the cheap by “tokenzing” gas, the fees paid for running computations on-chain. The feature allows an Ethereum user to buy up transaction fees when they are low, store them and then spend them when the fee price inevitably rises again. While the matter is still under discussion, some developers worry tokenized gas could one day […]
Earlier it was reported that British patriotic songs such as “Land of Hope and Glory” and “Rule Britannia” could be dropped from the setlist of the Last Night of the Proms amid Black Lives Matter protests and anti-colonial sentiment. The scandal over whether such popular patriotic songs as Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory should be scrapped from the setlist of Last Night of the Proms in three weeks’ time spiraled further, as the centuries-old anthems were pronounced ‘racist propaganda’ in a debate on ITV’s Good Morning Britain on Monday. The BBC is reportedly considering dropping the songs, which […]

Crypto companies enthusiastically building solutions to bring the industry in line with anti-money laundering (AML) benchmarks may be creating their own interoperability problem. There are a number of promising and popular solutions coming to the fore, but If a virtual asset service provider (VASP) using one solution is unable to talk to a counterparty using another, the Financial Action Task Force’s (FATF) requirement to leave an identifiable trail when transferring funds becomes pointless. To remedy this “Travel Rule” conundrum, Netki is adding a system of “translators” to its TransactID protocol that the company says creates “an interoperability bridge” between VASPs, having […]

Brendan Smialowski/Getty Given the death toll from COVID-19 and the continuing public outcry over police brutality in the United States, it may have gone largely unnoticed that on June 11, President Trump issued an executive order targeting the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Hague-based war crimes tribunal that the United States has refused to join. The order, which has prompted harsh condemnation from the international justice community and other concerned stakeholders, comes on the heels of a recent ruling by the ICC authorizing an impartial investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity alleged to have been committed by the various parties […]

During their conversation Rudy weighed in on the Soros-funded district attorneys who are destroying law and order in American cities. Rudy Giuliani: Look at the DAs we have now. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin did not rule out running for office again. A constitutional amendments package, that is set to be voted on in Russia soon, would grant him such an option if adopted. Asked whether he will run for president again or not, Putin avoided an affirmative answer – but did not rule out such a possibility either. “We’ll see,” Putin told Russian state television on Sunday. “I have not decided anything for myself yet.” Russia’s president also refused to say whether he considered finding himself a ‘successor’, explaining that it would only disrupt the government’s work. Everyone in the government, […]

Thousands of white-clad protesters have filled the courtyard of the Brooklyn Museum in solidarity with the black transgender community, and to draw attention to the deaths of transgender people in prisons and police custody. The crowd, however, appeared to be completely ignoring social distancing rules put in place to slow down the spread of Covid-19 – prompting many to wonder how this stands with New York […]

A new messaging standard released today is designed to help cryptocurrency firms comply with anti-money laundering regulations from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The standard, called IVMS101, defines a uniform model for data that must be exchanged by virtual asset service providers (VASPs) alongside cryptocurrency transactions. The standard will identify the pseudonymous senders and receivers of crypto payments, with such information “traveling” with each transaction. Getting industry players to agree upon an interoperable data standard is a significant step towards a more regulated crypto space. The standard messaging format now needs to be incorporated into the various solutions being built […]
