Pentagon’s No.1 weapons supplier Lockheed Martin Corp. announced on Monday that following a successful launch from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, the U.S. Space Force’s Space Delta 4 operations team is now “talking” with the fifth Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (SBIRS GEO-5) satellite. As planned, SBIRS GEO-5—built by Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT)—is responding to the Delta’s commands. Signal acquisition was confirmed approximately ~36 minutes after the satellite’s 1:37 p.m. EDT launch aboard a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket. Now separated from the rocket, the satellite is continuing on to orbit under its own propulsion. SBIRS […]

The top-grossing defense firm in the world Lockheed Martin has announced that the new SBIRS GEO-5 missile warning satellite being completed. As noted by the company, the Space Based Infrared System Geosynchronous Earth Orbit satellite (SBIRS GEO-5) – the first military space satellite built on Lockheed Martin’s new, modernized LM 2100 bus – was completed in just about five years. That speed is pretty unheard of for satellites these days. Built in a record time and at no additional cost to the government for the upgrade, SBIRS GEO-5 is the first military space satellite built on the company’s modernized, modular LM […]

A groundbreaking new study of high resolution satellite imagery using a deep-learning algorithm has found that, contrary to popular opinion, there are at least 1.8 billion trees in the Sahel and Sahara deserts. A team of 24 scientists from across Europe, the US and Africa found that the so-called sub-humid zone is surprisingly filled with plant life, forcing a rethink of two of the world’s major deserts and even public policy on deforestation. “We were very surprised that there are quite so many trees growing in the Sahara desert,” lead author Martin Brandt, an assistant professor of geography at the University […]
The US has signed a treaty with seven countries governing exploration and exploitation of the Moon and its resources. While many signatories never even landed there, Russia and China were – perhaps unsurprisingly – not invited. The Artemis Accords, proposed in May to set reasonable boundaries for the growing number of countries eager to stake a claim to Earth’s only satellite, have been officially unveiled on Tuesday. In addition to the US, the signatory countries are Australia, Canada, Japan, Italy, the UK, Luxembourg, the UAE, and Japan. China launched a new ocean observation satellite from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on Monday. Launch of the Haiyang-2C took place at 05:40 UTC under the power of a Long March-4B (Chang Zheng-4B) rocket. The Haiyang-2 program represents the second generation of ocean observation and monitorization satellites, with the program being approved by the China National Space Administration in February 2007, for measurement of ocean dynamic and environmental parameters in the microwave region (permitting all-weather observations). The requirements also call for collecting data on marine wind setup (wind vector), marine surface height, and SST (Sea Surface Temperature), along with aero-marine forecasts […]

China said that its BeiDou-3 global satellite navigation system is now fully operational and ready to provide high-precision positioning services across the globe. The system is set to compete with GPS. BeiDou-3 was inaugurated after its final satellite completed in-orbit tests and joined the network earlier this week. This means that China now has its own independent global navigation system, similar to GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and EU’s Galileo. China has been developing BeiDou since the mid-1990s. Its network gradually grew to 35 operational satellites, with the last one launched on June 23. According to Xinhua, the system has already been in […]

Until February 2020, when a satellite on orbit ran out of propellant, that was the end of its life. Most major communications and military satellites are designed with prolonged lifetimes and carry enough fuel for a 15 year mission. But the struggle for some satellite operators has been that at the end of that 15 year period, satellites running out of fuel are still working perfectly well in every other regard. Therefore, perfectly good satellites have to be decommissioned. But not anymore. See Also Galaxy 30 & MEV-2, BSat-4B LIVE NGIS Public Section L2 NGIS Section Click here to Join L2 […]
Earlier this June, the Department of Defense released the unclassified summary of its 2020 Defense Space Strategy, which openly designates space as a “distinct warfighting domain,” a distinction that only recently gained national policy acceptance. With this document, the DoD now has the authorization to begin preparing to deter potential space adversaries, and should deterrence fail, to win a conflict that extends into space. This important update to the near-decade-old National Security Space Strategy follows an April announcement by U.S. Space Command that Russia conducted a direct-ascent anti-satellite (DA-ASAT) missile test that is purportedly capable of destroying low-Earth orbit satellites. The Israeli government and Israel Aerospace Industries conducted a previously-unannounced launch of a reconnaissance satellite Monday, using a Shavit-2 rocket to deploy the Ofek 16 satellite into low Earth orbit. Ofek 16 is a small electro-optical imaging satellite, which will capture high-resolution images of the Earth for Israel’s Ministry of Defence. The name Ofek, from the Hebrew word אופק, meaning Horizon, has been applied to all of Israel’s military satellites regardless of their mission, including two early demonstration missions and subsequent optical and radar reconnaissance spacecraft. With the launch of Ofek 1 in September 1988, Israel became the eighth country to […]
