Military tensions are growing between the US and China as Washington continues to pursue a policy of attempting to dominate global affairs, Mike Wong, the vice president of the San Francisco chapter of Veterans for Peace, told Radio Sputnik’s Loud & Clear Friday. “There’s been a steady upbeat in US naval exercises in both the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait,” Wong told host Brian Becker on Friday. “We sent two carrier battle groups together running through the South China Sea. That started it off. Now, we’re doing other ships. We sent a missile cruiser by just yesterday and, of […]
Donald Trump’s national security advisor has tried to justify Washington’s air and sea operations in the South China Sea by saying the US has the “freedom” to do so, and dismissing all of Beijing’s objections. “The US always reserves its right to have freedom of navigation and freedom of aviation,” Robert O’Brien told the Atlantic Council on Friday. “I certainly reject any Chinese claims that flights over the South China Sea … constitute some sort of breach of a norm or a rule.” He added that, to him, it seems Beijing seeks “to annex a vast swath of the Western Pacific […]

A new study published in the Nature Climate Change journal on Monday states that polar bears could face extinction if climate change continues to melt sea ice. The study found that polar bears in the Arctic may near extinction by the end of the century due to climate change-induced melting of ice. The findings were based on models of greenhouse gas emissions. The researchers’ study foresees a dwindling population of bears, with their model suggesting that “with high greenhouse gas emissions, steeply declining reproduction and survival will jeopardize the persistence of all but a few high-Arctic subpopulations by 2100.” “Moderate emissions […]

A senior US diplomat has asked other countries to vote against the candidate for the People’s Republic of China (PRC) seeking a judge’s seat at the International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea in upcoming elections, saying the country’s actions in the South China Sea should disqualify it. Scientists have issued new warnings over the Thwaites Glacier in the Amundsen Sea in West Antarctica, saying its collapse could result in substantial sea-level rises. In interviews with the Financial Times, several scientists noted that the collapse of the ice mass – which has been referred to as the “doomsday glacier” – could increase sea levels by around 65 centimeters by itself. However, its fall could lead to a runaway collapse of other ice in West Antarctica, causing sea levels to increase by up to 6 feet. The Thwaites Glacier’s melting is already responsible for about 4% of global sea-level rises, […]

China has accused the US of trying to inflame tensions among powers that have stakes in the South China Sea. The rebuke comes after Washington formally rejected China’s territorial claims in the region on behalf of US allies. In a strongly-worded statement on Tuesday, the Chinese embassy in the US demanded that Washington keep its distance from the disputes between Beijing and other nations claiming sovereignty over contested territorial waters and islets in the South China Sea. “We advise the US side to earnestly honor its commitment of not taking sides on the issue of territorial sovereignty, respect regional countries’ efforts […]
Earlier, the US Secretary of State labeled Beijing’s territorial claims to the waters and an exclusive economic zone beyond the 12-nautical mile (22 kilometres) around the Spratly Islands group in the South China Sea as “unlawful”, outlining that the United States does not accept the terms. The former US national security adviser, John Bolton, praised in a tweet Washington’s move to decline Beijing’s maritime claims in the South China Sea, urging to “move beyond freedom of navigation exercises to oppose China’s coercive behavior in the region”. The former Trump appointee stressed that “this is not a Chinese provence and will not […]

The Foreign Ministry in Beijing said on Monday that the United States had deliberately sent its ships to the South China Sea to flex its muscles. China also accused Washington of trying to drive a wedge between the countries in the region. Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian made the comments in response to a question about two US aircraft carriers conducting operations and exercises in South China Sea. US Navy aircraft carriers are conducting exercises in the contested sea within sight of Chinese naval vessels spotted near the flotilla, the commander of one of the carriers, the USS Nimitz, told Reuters on […]
The U.S. Forces are carrying out a series of large-scale military exercises in the South China Sea amid border tensions between India and China. The USS Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carriers and several warships were deployed to the South China Sea to demonstrate U.S. Indo-Pacific Command’s commitment to the security and stability of the Indo-Pacific region. High-end integrated exercises build unmatched flexibility, endurance, maneuverability, and firepower in an all-domain warfighting environment. These efforts support enduring U.S. commitments to stand up for the right of all nations to fly, sail, and operate wherever international law allows. Sailors from both carrier strike groups […]
Amid pressure from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), China has committed to resuming negotiations aimed at drawing up a Code of Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (COC). The news comes amid controversial Chinese naval drills near islands also claimed by Hanoi. At the 26th ASEAN-China Senior Officials’ Consultation on Wednesday, Beijing committed to resuming discussions on creating a legally binding COC for the South China Sea, a waterway in which China’s claims overlap with those of five other nations, four of which are part of ASEAN. However, no specific date or place has yet been set, […]
