From July through September, as the U.S. Senate race in South Carolina went from contested to competitive, Democrat Jamie Harrison dropped more money on ads than any Senate candidate of either party has ever spent, on everything, in a single quarter. Harrison’s campaign reported an astonishing $44 million in television, radio, and digital advertising spending in the third quarter of 2020, when it also posted a fundraising record, bringing in more than $57 million in contributions backing Harrison’s challenge to Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. The Democrat’s campaign also passed along more than $4 million to the state Democratic Party. They’ve invested […]

While all eyes are locked on the presidential debates and the competition between Trump and Biden, a no less important battle is to take place on 3 November, in which the future of 35 seats and control of the US Senate will be decided. The main struggle for dominance in the Senate, currently controlled by the GOP, will take place in six states where Republican and Democratic candidates have toss-up chances of winning the vote, the Cook Political Report said, in its latest assessment of the situation. All six toss-up seats are currently held by the GOP Senators. In three of these […]

The Senate has already cancelled meetings this week due to several senators, including two on the judiciary committee, revealing they are positive for Covid-19. The idea of virtual hearings has been suggested, but Democrats have been resistant to the […]

In 2012, the political scientist Ross Baker spent a sabbatical brushing up on his congressional knowledge by spending time in the office of Harry Reid, the then Democratic majority leader in the US Senate. Baker vividly remembers Reid telling him a story about Mitch McConnell, his opposite number in the Republican party. “Reid told me he couldn’t get McConnell to go to the White House with him,” Baker recalled. “McConnell would say, ‘I don’t want to go to that place.’ Reid specifically told me, ‘Mitch hates to go there.’” For Baker, the distinguished professor of political science at Rutgers University, that exchange […]
On Wednesday, a hotly anticipated probe by Senate Republicans into corruption allegations against Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, reported no evidence of wrongdoing. However, one analyst told Sputnik that investigators arrived at this conclusion by “moving the goalposts. The white-hot core of the impeachment of US President Donald Trump last December was his pushing the Ukrainian president to investigate the Bidens’ potentially corrupt behavior. Hunter Biden had become a board member of natural gas company Burisma Holdings, which does business in Ukraine, in the aftermath of the 2014 coup d’etat against Ukrainian President Vyktor Yanukovych, which was […]
Senate Republicans have released their controversial report on Joe Biden and his son Hunter’s former dealings with Ukraine in a politically-charged move to taint Biden’s campaign weeks out from Election Day. The investigation, which was spearheaded by Sens. Ron Johnson (R-WI) and Chuck Grassley (R-IA) focuses on Hunter Biden’s work for Ukrainian gas company Burisma Holdings—a key issue in last year’s impeachment of President Donald Trump. The probe was launched despite no evidence of any wrongdoing by Hunter Biden ever being established. The report contains little that wasn’t already known. Its headline finding is that two Obama administration officials raised some […]
Most everyone following the heated U.S. Senate contest in South Carolina recognizes that the opening of a U.S. Supreme Court seat—six weeks before Election Day—has shifted the balance of the race. Less than a day later, Graham officially discarded his stance from 2016 that high court appointments shouldn’t be made in an election year—and fully embraced his role as President Donald Trump’s warrior in securing a third Supreme Court […]

Republican Senator Ben Sasse is at the center of a national online discussion after his ideas to reform the US Senate according to the Founding Fathers’ supposed wishes were critiqued as both undemocratic and simply “weird.” Sasse’s Wall Street Journal opinion piece, published on Tuesday and titled “Make the Senate Great Again,” most notably made the case for repealing the 17th amendment of the constitution. The Senate Judiciary Committee released today two documents that provide more support that the Trump – Russia investigation was a total sham. Senator Lindsey Graham (finally) released two documents today related to the Trump – Russia scandal perpetrated on the American people by the Obama Administration. In an announcement today, Graham says: “I’m very pleased the investigation in the Senate Judiciary Committee has been able to secure the declassification of these important documents,” said Chairman Graham. “I want to thank Attorney General Barr for releasing these documents and allowing the American People to judge for themselves. “What have we learned […]
President John Adams once wrote: “National defense is one of the cardinal duties of a Statesman.” These words are as true now as they were when they were written in 1815. However, unlike in 1815, the weight of these words seems lost on some in Congress. As Congress moves forward with the National Defense Authorization Act and the passage of the defense appropriations bill, there are irresponsible calls for blanket cuts to defense spending that are either misguided or willfully ignorant of the role the U.S. military plays in maintaining global stability. In a time where China continues its unprecedented aggressive […]
With fewer than four months to election day, Democrats in the nation’s most competitive Senate contests are crushing their Republican opposition in the money race. Quarterly financial reports filed on Wednesday show that in the most competitive Senate contests in the country, Democratic candidates outraised Republicans in all but two. Two candidates, Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) and Texas Democrat MJ Hegar, had not filed their reports shortly before midnight on Thursday. In the twelve races where The Daily Beast was able to examine finances for both parties’ candidates—contests in Colorado, Maine, Iowa, Montana, Michigan, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama, Alaska, […]

Hugh Hefner’s son Cooper Hefner, who was raised in his father’s Playboy Mansion, announced Monday that he’s considering a bid for a seat in the California State Senate, specifically in the 30th District, which includes Los Angeles County. The 28-year-old businessman announced that he’s already established an exploratory committee to determine his chances of winning the Democratic Party’s nomination for the race, which could happen as soon as the beginning of 2021. In a statement to CNN, Hefner said he’s been considering entering the political arena for some time. “I am deeply concerned about my community and our government and believe […]
The statement comes after former special counsel Robert Mueller published an op-ed supporting the prosecution of Roger Stone, who was convicted following his investigation into alleged US-Russia collusion. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham has said that the Democrats’ request about testifying on the Russia investigation will be granted. “Apparently Mr Mueller is willing, and also capable, of defending the Mueller investigation through an op-ed in the Washington Post”, Graham said on Sunday. “Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee have previously requested Mr Mueller appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee to testify about his investigation. That request will be granted.” In his […]
Former Attorney General Jeff Sessions hit back at President Trump on Saturday just days ahead of the Alabama senate runoff. After recusing himself like a coward and allowing Rosenstein and Mueller to hijack the Justice Department for two years – which ended in a bloodbath of Trump associates, Sessions continues to attack President Trump. Trump on Saturday morning blasted AWOL Jeff Sessions: Big Senate Race in Alabama on Tuesday. Vote for Tommy Tuberville, he is a winner who will never let you down. Theresa Greenfield is a 56-year-old Des Moines real estate development executive who’s still small-town, girl-next-door-friendly. She’s also running for the United States Senate. Her style is so earnest, affable, and humble that talking to her the first question that comes to mind is: What’s a nice girl like you doing in a racket like this? Part of the answer lies with Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst. The last time many saw her, back when she first ran in 2014, she was a pig castrator on a Harley vowing to snip the private parts of the porcine influence peddlers and their senatorial prey. […]

The US Senate passed a bill on Tuesday sanctioning banks that do business with those Chinese officials who implement Beijing’s new national security law on Hong Kong, sending it to the White House for President Donald Trump’s signature. “This is an urgent moment. The US Senate has voted to table a bill that would have ended the war in Afghanistan and repealed the 2001 law authorizing the War on Terror, shooting down a rare attempt to wind down the longest conflict in American history. Lawmakers voted 60-33 on Wednesday to kill legislation introduced by Senators Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) and Tom Udall (D-New Mexico) as an amendment for a broader defense spending bill. Dubbed the AFGHAN Act, the measure would have directed the Pentagon to begin an “orderly withdrawal” from Afghanistan and pay a $2,500 bonus to American soldiers. Ahead of the vote, Senator Paul […]
Not every U.S. lawmaker is on board with the idea of a central bank digital currency (CBDC) or digital dollar, but no one explicitly rejected it during a hearing of the powerful Senate Banking Committee Tuesday. That’s probably the biggest takeaway from Tuesday’s hearing, where the panel heard from former regulator turned CBDC evangelist Chris Giancarlo, Paxos CEO Charles Cascarilla and Duke Law professor Nakita Cuttino as expert witnesses. The lawmakers present asked questions about financial inclusion, including what potential regulations or laws might make digitization easier and more accessible to the unbanked. “The U.S. needs a digital dollar,” said Senator […]

The idea of a “digital dollar” will once again rear its head before the U.S. Congress on Tuesday. The U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs will hold a hearing on “The Digitization of Money and Payments,” and while few details have been released, the witnesses – former Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chair J. Christopher Giancarlo, Paxos co-founder and CEO Charles Cascarilla and Duke University Visiting Professor of Law Nakita Cuttino – suggest the focus may center in part around central bank digital currencies and stablecoins. The hearing may tread similar ground to a recent one hosted by […]

The US Senate Intelligence Committee has approved a measure that would require the government, including the Pentagon and intel agencies, to compile all data on unidentified aerial phenomena into a declassified report. Though the provision is part of a broader annual intelligence bill and must still be approved by the full Senate, the intelligence committee recently voted to add the measure into the legislation, calling on the government to “standardize collection and reporting on unidentified aerial phenomenon,” or UAP – more commonly known as UFOs. “The Committee remains concerned that there is no unified, comprehensive process within the federal government for […]
