A Washington Post editor provoked an onslaught of online ridicule after he opted to compare and contrast the real-life 2020 presidential race with TV series ‘The West Wing’, beloved by US liberals for its ideological outlook. Glenn Kessler, chief writer of Washington Post’s Fact Checker section, which rates the supposed veracity of political statements by assigning them a ‘Pinocchios’ score, pondered on Monday the meaning behind the ongoing election season being very unlike the 1999 TV show ‘The West Wing’. Kessler rushed to Twitter with his observation that the structured somber stories in Aaron Sorkin’s White House drama were quite different […]

Remember those chilling yet hilarious images of mannequins being used in restaurants to fill space? Television just kicked the craziness up a notch: As various productions resume, mannequins are now being used for crowd shots and even, in at least one case, sex scenes. The CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful was one of the first TV productions to resume filming amid the pandemic—and as executive producer Bradley Bell recently told the New York Times, inanimate dummies quickly became indispensable. “One of the first ideas we had was to bring in mannequins for the intimate scenes and hospital scenes, […]

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are conducting the first in a series of four spacewalks to begin the process of replacing the final set of the station’s batteries – an effort which first began over three years ago. EV-1 Chris Cassidy and EV-2 Bob Behnken kicked off EVA-65 on Friday. EVA background: The ISS features expansive solar arrays that use sunlight to power the station’s many systems. However, since the ISS spends about half of every orbit in darkness, it also needs batteries to store that solar energy, which can then be used to power the ISS during periods […]

The Stellar Development Fund (SDF) has loaned micropayments firm SatoshiPay $550,000 in XLM tokens after the coronavirus pandemic put the kibosh on its Series A funding round. Under lockdown in his Berlin flat, SatoshiPay CEO Meinhard Benn told CoinDesk via Google hangout the Series A, which was to have been finalized by the start of Q2, “fell apart” at the last minute because of the coronavirus pandemic as it became impossible to arrange meetings with potential investors, and market turbulence led to previously committed investors to pull out. Through its Enterprise Fund, SDF had already pledged $550,000 to the Series A. […]
There’s a very annoying thing in the age of streaming. It’s the “just wait until episode five… it gets real good” thing. The “I know there are close to 1,000 TV series to watch but spend several hours not enjoying yourself so you can appreciate when this arbitrary show finds its way” thing. The very annoying thing that—groan of all groans—can be true if you have the patience and/or the masochism to investigate. And so when it came to Space Force, I watched through episode five. And then I watched episode six. And episode seven. And episode eight. The show did […]
Considering the cheesy and unsubtle melodrama peddled by White Lines, it’s amazing that it takes until midway through its fourth episode before someone explains its metaphorical title (hint: it doesn’t just refer to cocaine!). Nonetheless, one doesn’t need to wait that long for wholesale absurdity to rear its head in this latest series from Money Heist mastermind Álex Pina, as the craziness begins early and then continues unabated for most of this Netflix import’s 10 roller-coaster installments. The modus operandi of this immoderate crime saga (premiering May 15) is to pile on the corniness at every turn, and in that respect, […]
In early March, when it became clear that the wrath of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States was going to be widespread and unforgiving, a disturbing, if unsurprising report came out: Wealthy Americans were apparently contacting their doctors and asking if they could pay for an early vaccine. Cost was no object. Of course, there was—and is—no vaccine, leaving the rich at no advantage on that front. But it was an early, ignoble exposure of what quickly became apparent when it comes to class and the pandemic. Sure, the virus appeared to be a great equalizer; among the first high-profile […]
