Berlin should step up and end the war in Ukraine. Nobody is talking about the blame that must be shouldered by the German government for the crisis and humanitarian disaster in Ukraine. Sure Russia is guilty of a huge war crime in invading Ukraine, Surely too, the US must be blamed for creating the situation which led Russia and its […]

Above Photo: Colin Ziemer / AP. Share buybacks hit a record high in 2021, enriching investors and executives at the expense of the working class. The coronavirus pandemic continued to wreak havoc in 2021, with the Omicron and Delta variants, supply chain disruptions, and inflation battering the global working class. In the United States, companies continued to put profits before worker well-being while the Biden administration refused to provide relief like continuing the child tax credit. Amid much bad news for workers last year emerged a key victor: wealthy shareholders. Share buybacks hit a record high last year. Companies in the S&P 500 — a […]

Four years ago, when the Seychelles-based cryptocurrency exchange BitMEX announced a new product called the “perpetual bitcoin leveraged swap,” few traders in nascent digital-asset markets could have anticipated what a major impact the obscure roll-out would have on the industry. But the instrument, which made it easy for customers to trade the equivalent of $100 of bitcoin for every $1 down, proved hugely popular and successful among risk-hungry traders, vaulting BitMEX into the top ranks of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchanges. Now, digital-asset analysts and investors are scrambling to assess the market damage after U.S. authorities on Thursday brought a series […]
Chinese bitcoin miner manufacturer MicroBT is looking to grab a bigger slice of the U.S. market by setting up its first overseas production center. The company said on Friday that it has partnered with New York-based Foundry Digital LLC and a Southeast Asian company in order to improve supply chain efficiencies for North American buyers of its flagship bitcoin mining equipment. The Southeast Asian listed company – which MicroBT declined to name – is contracted to produce and deliver MicroBT’s WhatsMiner equipment to U.S. investors, who would otherwise pay an additional 25% tax if they receive shipments directly from China due […]

When COVID-19 claimed its first 100,000 lives in the U.S., Hidalgo County, Texas, seemed to have avoided the worst of it. The county, which sits on the border with Mexico, had just 10 deaths when the U.S. crossed that tragic milestone on May 27. But the U.S. has now doubled its death count to top 200,000 victims, and Hidalgo County has become one of the deadliest hot spots for COVID-19. Despite the lack of dense urban areas there — its largest city, McAllen, has fewer than 150,000 residents — the disease has killed more than 1,500 people across the county. “We […]
The New York Attorney General’s office (NYAG) wants Tether and Bitfinex to immediately turn over documents detailing a $900 million line of credit the first entity extended to the second, according to a new filing with a public court system. The NYAG’s office began a formal inquiry into Bitfinex and Tether last April, when it alleged Bitfinex had lost access to more than $850 million in customer and corporate funds, and covered up the shortfall by borrowing from Tether, with which it shares executives and corporate owners. The NYAG won a ruling that ordered the companies to turn over information pertaining […]

The Trump administration has struck a small-scale trade agreement with the European Union that could send more American lobster across the Atlantic. Europe has agreed to suspend tariffs on imports of live and frozen lobster from the U.S. for at least 5 years. In exchange, the U.S. will cut tariffs by 50% on some European products, including crystal glassware and cigarette lighters. While the agreement covers a tiny fraction of trans-Atlantic trade, it’s important for the American lobster industry which has been at a competitive disadvantage in Europe ever since Canada struck its own trade deal with the E.U. three years […]
The US dollar has recently been losing value against other currencies, dropping nearly 5% in July, its biggest monthly fall in more than 10 years. This decline is prompting economists worldwide to re-assess the role of the dollar as a global reserve currency, as some countries have resorted to other options in their bilateral transactions. The US dollar’s share of trade between Russia and China fell to a record low of 46% in the first quarter of 2020, according to recent figures provided by Russia’s Central Bank and Federal Customs Service. This data prompted experts to suggest that the two trading […]

__________Politics.co.ukJohnson and Trump now share the same covid policy: Pretend it doesn’t exist By Jonathan Lis It is perhaps no coincidence that, before they became world leaders, both Boris Johnson and Donald Trump made cameo appearances as themselves on soap operas. In 2009 Johnson propped up the bar of the Queen Vic, while in 2005 Trump appeared in Days of Our Lives. Both men have short attention spans and love performing. The main appeal of soap, of course, is that things constantly happen but never for too long. New characters arrive, storylines get tidied up, and events that captivate viewers one […]

Wu alone controls about 20% of Bitmain and three other founding members own about 15% in total. Bitmain’s employee stock option pool has another 19% and the remaining 10% belongs to external investors. But Zhan’s $4 […]
