It is common for legislators to introduce amendments that are […]
Americans spent more money on cars, health care and eating out last month than they did in June. The Commerce Department says consumer spending rose 1.9% in July. Consumer spending is a major driver of the U.S. economy, and it continues to recover from its pandemic plunge this spring. July marked the third consecutive increase in monthly spending, though the gains were smaller than in May and June. Spending is still about 4.5% below its level in February, before the coronavirus took hold in the United States. Economists warn spending may suffer in August now that supplemental unemployment benefits of $600 […]
Amazon and Apple have reported major quarterly gains, with the Jeff Bezos brainchild posting its biggest-ever profit while Apple saw strong earnings, even as Covid-19 drives the US economy into its worst contraction on record. The two tech giants announced their second quarter results on Thursday, both topping expectations on Wall Street as online sales and virtual products see a surge amid the ongoing health crisis. Amazon revenue jumped to $88.9 billion, up 40 percent from 2019, and the company brought on some 175,000 new employees in recent months. Though it had predicted it would lose money after dropping billions on […]

Anti-China hysteria has emerged as the central ‘threat’ designed to justify endless U.S. military spending and adventurism in the Asia-Pacific. The 2021 Department of Defense spending bill has become contested terrain for a progressive wing of Democrats seeking to curtail endless military spending and a Republican-led bipartisan coalition focused on increasing spending to “stay competitive” with ostensible threats […]
What Programs A 10% Cut In Military Spending Could Buy By Gabe Murphy, East Bay Times. NOTE: This week the US House of Representatives failed to pass an amendment to the military budget that would have cut it by 10 percent. Common Dreams reports: “Anti-war groups vowed to keep fighting to slash the bloated Pentagon budget after the House of Representatives on Tuesday rejected a proposal to cut U.S. military spending by 10% and invest the savings in housing, healthcare, and education in poor communities. Having launched a group designed to back Democratic politicians who would lead the resistance to President Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton’s support for those candidates has largely dried up. Over the first 18 months of the 2020 election cycle, her political outfit paid more in donation processing fees than it doled out in political contributions, campaign finance records show. The Onward Together Committee, which Clinton founded in the months after her 2016 election defeat, donated just $21,700 to six political candidates and political committees in 2019 and the first half of 2020, according to a Federal Election Commission filing this week. By […]
A year after Congress approved emergency humanitarian funds meant to benefit asylum seekers apprehended along the border with Mexico, a government watchdog report released Wednesday finds that some of that money got spent instead on things from dirt bikes to dog food to security camera systems. The title of the new U.S. Government Accountability Office report neatly sums up its stern message to the Department of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection agency: “CBP Needs to Increase Oversight of Funds, Medical Care, and Reporting of Deaths.” The report follows a legal finding by the GAO in June that by using that […]
Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) says that countries such as the UK and US don’t need to worry about taxes and can essentially print as much money as they require, an argument which has taken increasing significance amid the COVID-19 crisis because of the level of spending governments are engaged in to help counter the effects of the global recession. But Michael Roberts, a long-time economist with investment research firms in the City of London, argues that whilst it is true that governments do not wholly depend on taxes in order to spend money, printing money without adding to the productive capacity […]
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is working to defeat Trump favorite Kris Kobach in Kansas.A RINO group “Plains PAC” is spending $2 million in the primary against pro-Trump Republican Kris Kobach. They will run ads against Kobach accusing him of ties with white nationalists. This is a disgusting tactic coming from open border Republicans. As the coronavirus lockdown is gradually eased in the UK, government ministers have been seeking to get people working again and kick-start the stalled economy, with Chancellor Rishi Sunak underscoring that the top priority is “to support people, protect jobs and businesses through this crisis.” UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak is reportedly to reprimand UK government departments over their handling of spending projects worth tens of millions of pounds, reports The Telegraph. “Certain parts of Whitehall”, claim sources cited by the outlet, are perceived by the minister as failing to offer sufficiently detailed spending proposals, leaving Sunak “increasingly irritated” ahead […]
The world’s nuclear powers are increasingly pouring money into their atomic arsenals, a new report shows, with Washington leading the way. The US has also exited a major arms control treaty and deployed a new tactical weapon. Nine nuclear-armed nations spent an estimated $72.9 billion on their 13,000-plus atomic weapons in 2019, according to a new paper by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). At $35.4 billion in spending, the US accounts for nearly half the global total, ICAN says. However, ICAN pointed out, all this money and all these bombs have done nothing to protect any of these […]
