Across the US, Omicron infections continue to explode, as “more children are being admitted to hospitals than ever before,” according to *CNN.* Vaccination rates among children remain low and community spread, accelerated by the holiday season and the return to in-person instruction, is rippling across the social terrain; hitting teachers, parents, and family members. In just the Los Angeles school district, “Approximately 65,000 students and staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, according to mandatory testing conducted by the district during the winter break.” The drastic spike in COVID cases has also been coupled with increasing shortages of medical staff, which has hindered the ability of many people to […]

President Trump dying of coronavirus and handing over power to Mike Pence. Black Lives Matter protesters surrounding the Clintons’ house in New York and firing gunshots. These are a few of the fake scandals that an Israeli news outlet’s hacked Twitter account tried to fool readers into believing for a few brief moments earlier this month. Twitter says the trolls amplifying them are linked to Iran. The incident ended as quickly as it began and the outlet, Israel Hayom, regained control of its account. But the fear and uncertainty regarding the coronavirus have made online groups targets for the spread of false information. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is delivering a speech in London this Monday, 12 October, outlining an expected “three-tier system” of restrictions to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the UK. Murdoch, an Israeli-Australian (now US by act of congress) citizen, is a plotter. He bought Newt Gingrich, hired his wife, published Newt’s awful books and had a GOP congress give him the American based Fox network by changing law on foreign ownership. The UK authorities on Tuesday reported an abrupt increase in infection rates – over 14,500 new coronavirus cases, roughly 2,000 up from Monday, with the worrisome statistics making the resolution of the health crisis an even more burning issue. Senior politicians from four major northern councils have directed a letter to the government warning that the current coronavirus restrictions are “not working”, calling some of them confusing and others counterproductive. In the letter by Leeds City Council leader Judith Blake, Manchester City Council leader Sir Richard Leese, Newcastle City Council head Nick Forbes, and Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson expressed their “extreme […]

Outraged that Kentucky authorities did not charge anyone with murdering Breonna Taylor, activists have egged on Black Lives Matter protesters with incendiary messages and called for riots in other cities – while blaming Russia. Taylor, 26, was shot and killed in March, during what was reported to be a “no-knock” drug raid. On Wednesday, however, Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron said the police had properly introduced themselves before Taylor’s boyfriend opened fire on them. One former officer was charged for recklessly shooting through walls, but the crossfire that killed Taylor was ruled justified. It did not take long for outraged activists […]

Before last night’s neon obscenity—a Trump rally on the South Lawn of the American White House—the 2020 Republican National Convention was close to cartoonish in its attempt to scare the country into voting for Donald J. Genome Data Help Track Community Spread of COVID-19 by NIH Director’s Blog/Dr. Francis Collins Contact tracing, a term that’s been in the news lately, is a crucial tool for controlling the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. It depends on quick, efficient identification of an infected individual, followed by identification of all who’ve recently been in close contact with that person so the contacts can self-quarantine to break the chain of transmission. Properly carried out, contact tracing can be extremely effective. It can also be extremely challenging when battling a stealth virus like SARS-CoV-2, especially when the virus is spreading […]
Older Children Spread the Coronavirus Just as Much as Adults, Large Study Finds by Apoorva Mandavilli/The New York Times In the heated debate over reopening schools, one burning question has been whether and how efficiently children can spread the virus to others. A large new study from South Korea offers an answer: Children younger than 10 transmit to others much less often than adults do, but the risk is not zero. And those between the ages of 10 and 19 can spread the virus at least as well as adults do. The findings suggest that as schools reopen, communities will see clusters of […]

Researchers have found that astrocytes, a type of brain cell, can harbor HIV and then spread the virus to immune cells that traffic out of the brain and into other organs. The study, conducted by researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago and published in PLOS Pathogens, was funded by the National Institutes of Health. “This study demonstrates the critical role of the brain as a reservoir of HIV that is capable of re-infecting the peripheral organs […]
