Above Photo: US Ministry of Truth. (@USMiniTru / Twitter Parody Account) Liberals are the force behind censorship efforts. They defend the state and seek to silence anyone who questions its narratives. Twice in the month of April Barack Obama spoke about “disinformation.” First at the University of Chicago and then at Stanford University he claimed that democracy is at risk because of social media. Democracy is certainly at risk but not because of anyone’s tweets. His words were really meant to frighten Americans into accepting censorship should anyone dare to present a narrative that differs from the state’s. Of course, that isn’t what Obama said. […]

For two and a half months, unhoused protesters maintained a tent demonstration across from the capitol in so-called Boise, Idaho. In response, folks were given a printout from capitol security and Idaho state police that informed them that they would be ticketed/trespassed from the area and potentially arrested if they remained past the 28th of […]
Military service in the U.S. and the U.K. promised more than it ever delivered for many post-9/11volunteers. As sociologist and Vietnam vet Jerry Lembcke observes, “this generation of veterans went off to Iraq and Afghanistan with more hoopla than any generation since World War II. But a lot of them, particularly the men, came back deflated and disappointed with the experience they had. It did not live up to the mythology of what war is supposed to be, because there is no glory in these inglorious wars.” Adding insult to moral injury, hundreds of thousands of modern-day veterans developed long-term medical […]

The US political elite and their elite press are using the fraudulent claims about a “crime wave” as an ideological offensive, a backlash, against the large-scale protest movements over the past few years. As US domestic fascism continues to evolve, there is an overt reemergence of a pro-police narrative that no one seems to be talking about. It comes amid stories that suggest that there is a crime wave in major cities across the US. In response, the mainstream press has been amplifying pundits and politicians, […]

Reconstruction was the era in which 4 million newly emancipated people seized their freedom (to borrow from the evocative title of Dr. Kidada Williams’ fantastic podcast, Seizing Freedom). In thousands of acts of creation, both individual and collective, humble and grand, formerly enslaved people and their allies sought to build the world anew. In the words of Frederick Douglass, the era offered “nothing less than a radical revolution.” Reconstruction has much to teach […]
As the United States, with the aid of Western allies and the corporate media, escalates aggression toward Russia using Ukraine as the vehicle, it is necessary to take time to look at the bigger picture of the United States’ disregard for international law and the impact that is having globally as well as the push to expand NATO and how that is causing significant division within the alliance. Above photo: Shutterstock. While states and localities still have a long way to go toward getting everyone access to high-speed Internet, efforts at all levels of government, and especially federal funding, promise positive progress. If 2020 convinced the country that broadband for all Americans is essential, then 2021 underscored a reality of life: Goals often require longer timelines than we’d prefer. To put it another way, a worldwide emergency helped the U.S. recognize the importance of having ubiquitous high-speed Internet, and now we’re playing catch-up. There’s no quick and clean fix, which is a clunky pill to swallow for millions of people who […]

Introduction Twenty years after 9/11, the war on terror has remade the U.S. into a far more militarized actor, both around the world and at home. The human costs of this evolution are many — including mass incarceration, widespread surveillance, the violent repression of immigrant communities, and hundreds of thousands of lives lost to war and violence. But of course, this militarization also has financial costs too. Over 20 years, the U.S. has spent more than $21 trillion on militarization, surveillance, and repression — all in the name of security. These investments have shown us that the U.S. has the capacity […]

Are cryptocurrencies a new form of money and, if so, do they threaten state power? Our friend Nic Carter has recently commented on these questions in dialogue with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. We would like to add our perspective and thoughts on this, as we believe there is value to be derived from discussing these matters in depth. For better and worse, we believe that blockchains such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Handshake (in which I am involved) have features that make them a novel threat to the powers that states derive from currency issuance — but only a very marginal threat. Late last month, Arizona State University placed dozens of students and four Greek chapters on interim suspension, pending an investigation of their alleged violations of COVID-19 safety protocols. The photos displayed in a local news broadcast that night—dozens of students packed together, maskless, on a boat; sorority sisters packing together for rush week—were shocking. But even more surprising was the revelation that they hadn’t been unearthed by a school administrator or the campus newspaper, but by an anonymous student Twitter account known as “ASUcovidTracker.” The account, which has racked up more than 4,000 followers in the two months since it started, […]

India’s Supreme Court is generally considered impartial, but it has been subject to public scrutiny recently, especially after the court punished a senior lawyer for contempt. The court in its judgement said, “The foundation of the judiciary is the trust and the confidence of the people in its ability to deliver fearless and impartial justice.” In an unprecedented move, an Indian state chief has complained to the Chief Justice of the country that an Indian Supreme Court judge has been influencing politically sensitive matters in his state. In a letter, the Minister Chief of Andhra Pradesh, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, alleged […]

VT: Trump bought the land for 2 million, filled with asbestos lined buildings, rotting away, too expensive to clean up. He walked away from it, no golf course was built but took at $26.1 million write off on a $2 million piece of land that today is worth negative dollars. Federal law requires anyone taking a write off of more than $5000 to provide a “qualified appraisal” to justify the deduction. Trump has withheld his taxes on this issue and many others where such appraisals and other required documentation, we believe, was not supplied. There is no record of any kind […]

Fears over the spread of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic have prompted election officials in many US states to allow the use of absentee ballots by all registered voters in the upcoming presidential election. Democrats advocate the move, while Republicans oppose it, with President Donald Trump claiming absentee voting could lead to “voter fraud”. In response to the coronavirus pandemic, dozens of states have modified their rules for absentee voting in November’s elections. Some of those changes are more substantial than others. California, Nevada, New Jersey and Vermont, along with Washington, D.C., are sending mail-in ballots to all voters, joining the handful of states that conduct all-mail elections.
