Above Photo: Peter and Maria Hoey. Rampant outsourcing, financialization, monopolization, deregulation, and just-in-time logistics are the culprits. Anyone old enough to remember the Cold War is familiar with a scene routinely depicted on U.S. television at the time: the Soviet breadline. Warning Americans about life under communism, these clips showed Russian citizens lingering forlornly outside businesses for hours to obtain basic goods—indelible proof of the inferiority of central planning, and an advertisement for capitalism’s abundance. Breadlines, the Big Book of Capitalism assured us, could not happen in a market economy. Supply would always rise to meet demand, as long as there’s […]
At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, panic buying seemed to create a shortage of different necessities, including toilet paper. Midway through the COVID-19 pandemic, housing prices started rising drastically, as demand surpassed supply due to shortages of construction materials. As students returned to in-person learning, schools found nutritious food for school lunches more difficult to get, and the U.S. relaxed requirements that schools must comply with federal nutrition standards. Visit any grocery store recently and you are likely to find shelves bare of any number of items. A global shortage of computer chips has created a drastic reduction […]

The statement came as President Volodymyr Zelensky met UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson in London to sign a spate of bilateral cooperation agreements. New research suggests that somewhere between 30 to 50 percent of the world’s water supply is being illegally siphoned off and is not being paid for or counted, reviving debate about how we define water. In their paper, the researchers argue that a lack of any widely-accepted definition of what constitutes water theft, or whether it can even exist at all, precludes coordinated effort from governments, regulators and communities and therefore hamstrings any efforts at enforcement and policing of water resources. The study points the blame squarely at the political, legal and institutional establishments which it says are fundamentally flawed and […]

Numerous vaccines for SARS-CoV-2 are currently being developed across the world, with more than 20 entering the final stages of trials. The World Health Organisation has warned, however, that there may never be a “silver bullet” for the disease, which has infected 18.2 million people worldwide and killed almost 700,000. “Even if you have an optimistic assessment of the scientific progress, there is not enough coronavirus vaccines for the world”, said Rasmus Bech Hansen, CEO of the analytics company Airfinity. The statement comes as health advocates across the world fear that wealthier countries could monopolise the supply of COVID-19 vaccines, leaving […]

Bitcoin miners curtailed their supply to exchanges to the lowest level in 12 months during the second quarter, revealing their long-term bias on the cryptocurrency. The daily miner selling activity, as measured by the percentage of bitcoin sent to exchanges, fell to a 365-day low of 15% on May 20, according to data provided by Chainalysis. Bitcoin miners operate on cash and are constant sellers in the market, liquidating at least some part of their holdings every day in order to cover their operational costs. “It seems miners, […]

At the time of publication, 60.63% of all bitcoins have not moved in at least a year, according to data from Glassnode. So far, Boris Johnson’s government has been eager to allow China’s tech giant Huawei to participate in Britain’s 5G rollout despite warnings from its Five Eyes intelligence partners. But following concerns over China’s alleged role in the coronavirus pandemic, Downing Street has become increasingly cautious over its ties with Beijing. London is creating an alliance of 10 democratic countries that will task their national tech companies to supply 5G equipment as an alternative to those provided by China’s giant Huawei, the Times reported citing sources familiar with the development. The club will be dubbed “D10” and could potentially include all G7 […]

The value of assets for all stablecoins surpassed $10 billion Tuesday, having surged by over 70% in just two months, according to Coin Metrics. Stablecoin supply growth comes as more cryptocurrency traders choose to trade alternative cryptocurrencies (or altcoins) using dollar-backed digital tokens instead of bitcoin. Most of the stablecoin growth comes from tether, which represents almost 90% of the total stablecoin supply. The largest tether markets measured by traded volume are supported by two Asia-based exchanges, Binance and Huobi, according to CoinGecko. Both exchanges support nearly 200 different cryptocurrencies, which makes them attractive platforms for altcoin traders. Almost every exchange […]
Coronavirus testing is ramping up across the country but not nearly fast enough. The consensus among experts is that “Phase One” testing must at least triple before the economy can fully re-open. After that, we’ll need tens of millions more COVID-19 tests, not to mention contact tracing and—when they become more accurate—widespread antibody testing. Can we recruit, train and—most important—supply a new “Testing Army”? The answer is yes because we’ve done it before. It’s time to think of a mobilization model so old, it’s new. In 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps went from zero to 275,000 in four months—the fastest mobilization […]

Tradeshift, the digital trade finance platform that uses blockchain to make payments instant and transparent, has proposed a scheme to the government of Denmark that will free billions of dollars from supply chains, the startup says. The COVID-19 crisis, like the 2008 financial crisis, has seen companies stretch payment terms and try to preserve cash, which causes a ripple effect down the supply chain and makes the overall situation steadily worsen. Tradeshift’s plan is to motivate big companies that have applied the brakes, to pay their suppliers instantly rather than delaying, thus preventing further calcification of supply chains and possibly keeping […]
Tether growth is hitting new all-time highs across multiple blockchains, but the first protocol to support Tether is being left behind. Omni Layer, built on Bitcoin, has suffered negative growth in Tether transactions for the last 12 consecutive months. Tether supply on Omni Layer has also fallen more than 50% over the same period, according to Coin Metrics. Omni Layer’s Tether supply peaked in mid-2018 at just over $3 billion. Tether tokens first launched on Omni Layer in October 2014. While fluctuations in stablecoin supply and transaction counts happen regularly, it’s unusual for there to be a contraction in supply for months at […]
