Paul wants to add text to the bill to create an inspector general for oversight of the billions being sent to Ukraine. On Thursday, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) blocked an effort in the Senate to hold a quick vote on the nearly $40 billion aid package for Ukraine that passed in the House on Tuesday. “My oath of office is to the US constitution not to any foreign nation and no matter how sympathetic the cause, my oath of office is to the national security of the United States of America,” Paul said on the Senate floor before blocking the vote. “We cannot save […]

MIAMI — For nearly an hour on Monday, Alan Herrera stood in a line to cast his early vote for Joe Biden in the heart of one of Donald Trump’s Latino strongholds. Kennedy Library in Hialeah, a predominantly Cuban American city in the coveted swing state of Florida where the president and the former vice-president appear neck-and-neck in various polls. About a dozen people ahead of Herrera waited their turn to go inside the early voting precinct. Roughly three dozen more voters stood behind him, lining the […]

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – US President Donald Trump says the Democrats will turn the country into “one giant sanctuary for criminals” by defunding police and instigating attacks on law enforcement officers. “If you give the power to Democrats, the radical left will defund, disband, disarm and dismantle police departments all across America. Asked if he [Biden] supports slashing police funding, he said ‘yes, yes, absolutely yes,’” Trump said at a Saturday campaign rally in Janesville, Wisconsin. Trump pointed to prolonged unrest that Democrat-run states, such as Chicago, New York and Oakland, have been suffering from amid Black Lives Matter protests. “This year […]
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Bolivia’s Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has decided not to use a new computer system for vote counting in the upcoming presidential election, TSE head Salvador Romero has announced. “The Supreme Electoral Tribunal has been testing the preliminary results distribution system (DIREPRE) in recent weeks. And we want to inform the country that the test results do not allow us to ensure the security of full data distribution. That’s why … TSE has decided to withdraw the system for the current elections,” Romero told reporters on Saturday. He assured that vote counting will be carried out transparently and in […]
Look, I’m voting for Joe Biden. I get why white racists and millionaires—and people who stand at the intersection of those two groups—are all-in for Donald Trump, but for the rest of us, self-preservation dictates that Biden is the better choice. Thursday night’s dueling presidential town halls, which featured a belligerent Trump and a comparatively contemplative Biden, drove that all the way home. If I believed, at this late stage, that “undecided voters” were real, and not people with made-up minds in desperate need of attention, I cannot imagine how the contrast could have been any starker or the decision clearer. Maine Senator Susan Collins says she will vote ‘no’ to confirming Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, since it’s too close to the election, while refusing to say anything critical about how Barrett’s originalist judicial philosophy might imperil a woman’s right to choose. Collins is a Republican who supports abortion rights, a brand that has carried her to victory four times, but with Barrett’s confirmation all but certain, Collins’ longtime balancing act may have reached its tipping point. The GOP is getting closer to reaching its goal, the overturning of Roe v Wade, the now almost 50-year-old ruling that made […]
Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg will donate another $100 million to aid election officials around the US after an initial $300 million grant – ruled lawful by a federal judge even while he warned the money could distort the vote. A lawsuit challenging the grant scheme in Wisconsin was struck down on Wednesday, with US District Judge William Griesbach stating that he found no legal reason to bar five major cities in the state from receiving $6.3 million from the donated funds. However, Griesbach nonetheless wrote in his decision that the private cash could influence the outcome of the election. The risk […]

A game show that asks audiences whether or not to award someone U.S. citizenship sounds like a twisted kind of dystopia. But for the co-creators of American Dreams, an interactive production staging live online performances through Nov. 15, that unsettling premise is closer than it may seem to the truth. “Every time you vote, you’re choosing how this country operates,” said Tamilla Woodard, director and co-creator of American Dreams, which was originally conceived as an in-person performance and mounted at Cleveland Public Theatre in 2018. Woodard and American Dreams writer and co-creator Leila Buck adapted the show for a virtual run […]
More than 66.6 percent must vote against Bartomeu for him to be removed. If that happens, the club will then have to hold an election to elect a new president. A vote of no confidence against Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is set to go ahead within the next few weeks after club members reached the required amount of signatures for the motion to go through. The move to replace Bartomeu comes after six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi sent a burofax in August saying he wanted to leave the club. Messi has since changed his mind amid reported threats of legal action […]
When Scott Forman started a software-assisted letter-writing campaign to get out the vote in 2017, he had no idea it would become the perfect strategy for 2020’s global pandemic election. Today, his nonprofit, Vote Forward, has recruited volunteers to pen over 11.5 million letters and counting that will be sent later this month to unlikely voters across the nation. “It’s one of the biggest tactics in our unusual year where it’s no longer possible to knock on people’s doors,” Forman told The Daily Beast. Older volunteers at higher risk of severe COVID-19 complications are looking for a grassroots organizing method they […]
BERLIN (Sputnik) – The congress of Germany’s ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU), during which its new leader is supposed to be chosen to succeed Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, is at risk of being postponed again due to the resurgence of coronavirus cases, German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung reported on Thursday, citing party sources. The party congress was initially supposed to take place on 25 April in Berlin but then postponed indefinitely in mid-March and eventually rescheduled for 4 December in Stuttgart. It was decided to rescind the congress from the normal three days to just one. The participants will be given special gadgets that […]
Without naming names, editors of the longest-running US medical journal have outright adopted the platform of Democratic candidate Joe Biden, urging Americans to vote out their “political leaders” over their Covid-19 response. Titled ‘Dying in a Leadership Vacuum,’ the editorial – dated October 8 but made public Wednesday – says the US leadership “failed” the Covid-19 test, turning a crisis into a tragedy. While it does not mention the names “Trump” or “Biden” once, its political implications are crystal clear. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated […]
Asked in a recent interview how things were going as Election Day draws near, a state elections director paused, searching for the right words. “I feel like I’ve got democracy in a boat,” the director told The Daily Beast, “and my staff is bailing water out while people are drilling holes in it.” That official, who spoke anonymously to discuss the situation candidly, sums up how many election officials around the country are feeling right now. In normal times, they’re a group of professionals used to getting the job done with what meager funds they typically get—proud of it, even. Few, […]

But now that the deals have been inked and the peace process is starting to yield results in the form of economic agreements, […]

Seventeen Republican lawmakers declined on Friday to support a measure in the House of Representatives that condemned the pro-Trump QAnon movement as a “collection of unfounded conspiracy theories.” The resolution, which passed nearly unanimously, urged the FBI and intelligence agencies to focus on the threats from fringe conspiracy groups, which have grown in mass as the election has neared. All told, 371 members voted in favor of the resolution—including 225 Democrats and 146 Republicans—and 18 members voted against it. Of those 18, 17 were Republican and one was an independent: Rep. HOUSTON – Texas Democrats are planning to take Gov. In late October 2004, South Park aired one of its most iconic episodes—a pre-election installment called “Douche and Turd,” which crystallized the show’s nihilism, political and otherwise. The douche and turd were an on-the-nose symbol for the idea that in any given election, both politicians tend to be equally unappealing. But on Wednesday night, the long-running animated show defied its central tenet—the one insisting that caring at all is the stupidest position to take in any argument. And it did so in a way that one might imagine could perplex its creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, in their younger years. […]

Pedri said in a statement issued on Friday that a temporary independent contractor, employed to sort mail at the elections bureau, had “incorrectly discarded into the […]

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US President Donald Trump says he does not agree with Senator Susan Collins’ call for waiting until after the November election to fill the Supreme Court vacancy after the passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Trump said that he was going to nominate a new Supreme Court justice next week and that he did not agree with Collins’ stance on the issue. “I totally disagree with her, we have an obligation, we won, and we have an obligation as the winners to pick who we want. That’s not the next president”, Trump said, adding […]

Councillors on Scotland’s Shetland Islands archipelago have voted in favor of exploring “financial and political self-determination” amid growing public funding cuts under Nicola Sturgeon’s SNP government. The council voted 18 to two in favour of seeking increased independence against a backdrop of significant unease at the direction Scotland is taking in recent months, exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic and the ongoing Brexit deliberations. The motion, signed by council leader Steven Coutts, states that “more and more decision making [is] being centralised and public funding being consistently reduced … seriously threatening the prosperity, and even basic sustainability, of Shetland.” “The Shetland Islands […]
Republican Senator Ben Sasse is at the center of a national online discussion after his ideas to reform the US Senate according to the Founding Fathers’ supposed wishes were critiqued as both undemocratic and simply “weird.” Sasse’s Wall Street Journal opinion piece, published on Tuesday and titled “Make the Senate Great Again,” most notably made the case for repealing the 17th amendment of the constitution. This change would put an end to US senators being elected by statewide popular vote. The Nebraska legislator would like the country to go back to the pre-1912 amendment rule, where state legislatures voted on the […]
United States lawmakers are in a deadlock over the proposed fifth funding package to help tackle the coronavirus pandemic. With Republicans demanding a “skinny” bill of limited funding and Democrats wanting substantial support. Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced on Tuesday that a vote will be forced on the GOP’s coronavirus relief package following weeks of closed-door negotiations between Republican senators and the White House. “Today, the Senate Republican majority is introducing a new targeted proposal, focused on some of the very most urgent healthcare, education, and economic issues. … I will be moving immediately today to set up a floor vote […]
Michael Cohen claims in his new book that Donald Trump repeatedly insulted minorities during his 2016 campaign and dismissed them as “not my people,” according to an excerpt of Cohen’s book published by The Washington Post late Saturday. Cohen’s Disloyal: A Memoir describes how Trump also said he’d “never get the Hispanic vote” because “like the Blacks, they’re too stupid to vote for Trump.” Trump’s “low opinion of all Black folks” focused most viciously on former President Barack Obama, according to Cohen, the president’s former personal lawyer who is serving a three-year prison sentence for campaign finance violations. The embattled leadership of the U.S. Postal Service warned its elections-integrity task force on Thursday about “issues in the supply chain,” particularly from printers, that risk voters not getting ballots and election mail, according to a recording of the inaugural meeting of the task force acquired by The Daily Beast. “With the dramatic increase of ballots compared to previous elections, in some cases a tenfold increase in the number of ballots in some states, there are some issues in the supply chain,” a senior USPS official informed the group, which consisted of Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and other senior USPS officials. Fox News host Tucker Carlson once again engaged in some thinly veiled dog-whistling on Thursday night, insisting that Democrats are trying to “get out the vote” by funding “race riots” or offering “mentally ill homeless” people “free cigarettes.” Carlson, whose racist rhetoric and fear-mongering over Black Lives Matter has caused internal strife at Fox, kicked off Thursday’s broadcast of Tucker Carlson Tonight by saying the Democratic Party has always had problems turning out its voters. (Forty percent of the Democratic electorate is non-white, according to Pew Research.) “On average, Democratic voters are much less likely than Republicans to vote,” the conservative […]

That’s illegal – each person can only vote once. Maybe it’s best not to take political advice from infamous Chicago gangster Al Capone! On Wednesday, during a campaign trail speech in Wilmington, North Carolina, Trump told his supporters to try and vote twice in the November presidential election, suggesting they go to the polls even after voting by mail to “make sure […]
Dissociated Press President Donald Trump is facing a storm of criticism after calling on dead people to vote for him “early and often.” Responding to critics, Trump explained that he was not urging dead people to cast “just ten or twenty” votes each, which would be illegal, and might not work anyway. Instead, he said, each corpse should cast “hundreds or thousands” of votes as a safeguard to make sure that at least one of them is counted. Trump explained that deceased people are routinely discriminated against in the voting process. “That’s one of the Democrats’ ways of rigging elections,” he […]
US President Donald Trump has proposed that voters in North Carolina cast their ballots twice to test the state’s mail-in voting system, prompting criticism that he promoted the same “fraud” his detractors insist was impossible. “Well, they’ll go out and they’ll vote, and they’re going to have to go check their vote by going to the poll and voting that way, because if it tabulates, then they won’t be able to do that,” the president told reporters during a visit to North Carolina on Wednesday when asked about his confidence in mail-in voting. The event drew more than 400,000 viewers to its livestream on Sunday, organizers said. It continued to trend on Twitter through more than 5 hours of speeches that culminated in a vote to create a “major new corporate-free political party in America.” Among the speakers at the convention were several disgruntled Democrats, from Sen. Every four years, during the procedural announcement of delegate vote tallies at both parties’ nominating conventions, Americans are reminded of something I’m sure the vast majority of them forget all about in between conventions: the very existence of the five unincorporated United States territories–Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Territories that are under United States sovereignty, inhabited by about 3.5 million people who are United States citizens and nationals, but, inexplicably, will have no right to vote for the president come November. Ask any mainlander to find these five territories on a map […]

On Night 1 of the 2020 Republican National Convention, acolyte after high-profile acolyte lined up to lavish praise on President Donald Trump for standing tall between the American people and a Marxist, politically correct hellscape. A vocal faction of conservatives, including the president and his then-press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, called on ESPN to fire Hill. They publicly censured her instead, calling Hill’s actions “inappropriate” and strong-arming the SC6 co-host into issuing a half-hearted apology to the Worldwide Leader. One hundred years to the day after women first won the right to vote in America, and the country is in a weird, dark place. It’s all so retro. Even Kamala Harris, the first Black and South Asian woman on a major party’s presidential ticket, has to weather viciously misogynistic attacks while also pandering to 19th century notions of womanhood.
