Above Photo: New York Times Final Edition, 2011 Parody. Much of the New York Times reporting on Ukraine doesn’t meet basic journalistic standards. The “newspaper of record” is in fact a record of ruling class and state apparatus narratives. A “newspaper of record” is a major newspaper with a large circulation whose editorial and news-gathering functions are considered authoritative. In this country, that newspaper has been the New York Times. It is believed that librarians began to refer to The New York Times (NYT) as the “newspaper of record” in 1913 when it became the first U.S. newspaper to publish an index of the […]

The New York Times handed over its popular The Morning daily newsletter on January 18 to new hire German Lopez, formerly of Vox. His debut edition of the data-driven newsletter (usually helmed by David Leonhardt) was headlined “Examining the Spike in Murders.” As criminal justice activist and expert Alec Karakatsanis (Twitter, 1/18/22) pointed out, the analysis presented as indisputable the notion that a rise in homicides demands a police-based solution—a position that is, in fact, highly disputed, and worth debunking in detail, since it’s a popular one these days, both in the Times and in other prominent outlets (FAIR.org, 6/24/21, 7/20/21). More Police As Racial Justice? Lopez describes an increase in the murder rate over 2020 and 2021 […]

I’m old enough to remember when sociologists’ big worry for the American family was “helicopter parents” — moms and dads who hovered too closely over their spawn, denying them room to breathe. How quaint. The long, hot summer of 2021 has brought “the Sherman tank parent” — […]

Andrew Cuomo’s controversial Covid-19 nursing home order gathered in Brooklyn to protest the politician, who recently wrote a book on his leadership during the pandemic. The protesters gathered in front of the Cobble Hill Health Center, a nursing facility, and demanded an apology from Cuomo for his highly controversial March 25 order forcing nursing homes to accept Covid-positive cases, a decision many critics feel was a large factor in the 6500 deaths in nursing homes during the pandemic. Holding signs with such messages as “Cuomo killed my parents” and “Cuomo writes […]

After the New York Post dropped a bombshell story about Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden’s son Hunter’s Ukrainian business dealings on Wednesday, social media giants Facebook and Twitter rushed to limit its spread, prompting accusations of censorship and in-kind aid to Joe Biden. On Wednesday, the New York Post threw gasoline onto the smoldering coals of the Ukraine affair that led to US President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial in January, publishing a story titled “Hunter Biden emails show leveraging connections with his father to boost Burisma pay.” However, as the story gained traction on social media, Facebook and Twitter moved to […]

New York’s Covid-19 battle appears to be far from over, as several “hot zones” in the city will be shut down, and Governor Andrew Cuomo announced state-run “aggressive enforcement” starting this week. Queens, Brooklyn, Orange, and Rockland counties have all seen recent increases in positive coronavirus cases, identified areas will be the target of “direct enforcement,” ensuring businesses and citizens are abiding by mask mandates, social distancing orders, and other regulations in place in the state. “Local governments have not done an effective job of enforcement in these hotspot ZIP codes. For several months last spring, New York City was the U.S. epicenter of the coronavirus pandemic: Hospitals were overwhelmed by patients, a makeshift morgue was erected in Manhattan, and residents feared to leave the safety of their homes. But after a months-long lockdown, New York gained the upper hand on the virus, and since then, the city’s number of COVID-19 cases has remained low, even as other states continue to grapple with troubling outbreaks. As a result, America’s largest city opened schools for in-person classes on Sept. 21—but the phased reopening has been anything but smooth. By the end of the […]
As Sofia Coppola has gotten older, so too have her protagonists, which makes it easy to see them—and their plights—as reflections of the aspirations and anxieties currently preoccupying the auteur. That’s once again true with On the Rocks, the story of a 39-year-old writer struggling with insecurity, suspicions about her husband, and the long shadow cast by her larger-than-life father, here played by Coppola’s Lost in Translation headliner Bill Murray with more mega-watt vivacity than he’s shown in years. Premiering online at the New York Film Festival before debuting in theaters (on October 2) and on Apple TV+ (on October 23), […]

In that time, Respondents have produced ‘jurisdictional’ documents (as directed […]
At Middle School 839 in Brooklyn, teachers say there aren’t enough custodial staff on hand to carry out the city’s recommended pandemic cleaning plan. The electrostatic sprayer for disinfecting surfaces is missing parts and doesn’t work, they allege, while classroom windows only open three inches, making ventilation an issue. And the school only has about two weeks worth of face masks instead of the 30-day supply they were promised, the teachers claim. Because of this, MS 839 faculty—who are only permitted to work from home if they have specific underlying medical conditions—are urging parents to choose the “fully remote option” for […]

His demise began after he experienced an apparent mental health crisis, prompting his brother, Joe, to place an emergency services call. Rochester Police officers who responded found Prude naked and acting erratically. They ordered him onto the ground, where they promptly handcuffed him without […]

Clinton-appointed U.S. District Judge Victor Marrero on Thursday rejected President Trump’s second attempt to quash an investigation by abusive New York prosecutors seeking his tax returns and financial documents. Recall, Judge Marrero previously denied Trump’s first attempt to block a subpoena from crooked Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance. The Supreme Court also ruled last month that a US president is not immune from a grand jury subpoena while in office. “At its core, it amounts to absolute immunity through a back door, an entry point through which not only a President but also potentially other persons and entities, public and private, could […]
Steve Bannon, former chief strategist to President Donald Trump, was arrested in New York Thursday on charges of using the viral “We Build the Wall” fundraising campaign to enrich himself. As the November election draws near, one thing is becoming clearer by the day. The media is absolutely terrified by the idea of Joe Biden debating President Trump. The New York Times was taken to the woodshed after suggesting the Big Apple’s official seal features a noose, with netizens rushing to inform the newspaper that the object in question is, in fact, an antiquated measuring device. In a report published on Monday, the Times noted that New York’s emblem is facing “scrutiny” and could soon see a facelift, citing its “cartoonish” depiction of a Native American man in a loincloth alongside an early American settler. While the paper accurately described some of the seal’s symbolism – observing that beavers on the emblem represent the fur trade, for example – […]
