The commemoration comes amid the pandemic of the coronavirus that infected some 369,911 people in the country that has been reporting over 2,000 new cases daily over the past several months, according to the World Health Organisation.

The event commemorates the death of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who was killed in the battle of Karbala in the 7th century.

Iran remains one of the worst-hit nations in Asia both in the number of total coronavirus cases and fatalities (ranked 12th and 10th by the WHO respectively).

According to the latest data by the World Health Organisation, Iran has registered 369,911 cases and 21,249 fatalities since the outbreak of the disease.
